Actual gunplay feels slick and responsive, and you can shoot either horizontally or vertically; jumping and then shooting down actually lets you hover in the air for a short while, as the kickback from the guns keeps Mighty Goose airborne. This works even better with more powerful guns like the shotgun, and is incredibly satisfying to pull off when you encounter an enemy with a front-facing impenetrable shield. Although the gameplay feels great for the most part, the action can often get a little too chaotic. Mighty Goose isn’t the most resilient of protagonists, with a measly four chunks of health keeping him going at all times; when you’re up against dozens of enemies coming from every direction, don’t be surprised if you get hit by a projectile you never even saw coming. Keeping track of all the action can be tough, and the game almost feels a bit unfair at times as a result. To exacerbate this issue, the checkpoints throughout can be needlessly harsh, and actually seem to get wider apart the further along you progress. Thankfully (well, in a way), the steep difficulty curve comes pretty early on, so once you get to grips with how attacking and dodging works, you’ll find your ability to stay alive gets much better as you get into the later levels.

Other than the overly chaotic nature of the action, Mighty Goose is a visual treat, oozing style with its character and environmental design. The companions are also well realised, and can actually be played by a second person via co-op, although their abilities are arguably far inferior to Mighty Goose itself. Regardless, whether you play on your own or with a friend, Mighty Goose is a blast, and while it’s a bit short-lived at three-to-four hours, it’s definitely worth a shot if you’re up for some over-the-top run ‘n’ gun action. Never would I have ever thought that a day would come when I would blow away bugs, skeletons, robots and all sorts of other evil creatures with a gun toting tough guy…goose. Much like the games of my past, Mighty Goose takes a very similar artistic approach with an updated appeal. The art direction in this title is very satisfying by keeping true to that old school pixel art, but with just enough new age resolution to keep it looking fresh. Not only the technical side of the art, but the asthetics of the scenery, effects and characters are all very satisfying. This is a very beautifully designed game filled with all sorts of fun things to see. Of course, the main course to digest here is the gun play, which is incredibly fun. Mighty Goose in this regard also kept very true to the style of games like Metal Slug. Allowing the player to shoot in various directions allows for a very fun and varied approach to combat. A nice addition here is the kickback the guns provide while you’re in the air, which allow you to keep afloat while soaring through the air blasting anything caught under you. As if what this title has provided isn’t enough, they go an extra step further with the addition of the armor and companion system. While you make your way through the game, you will unlock new abilities that each have a percentage cost of a finite amount you have to spend. From running faster to gaining a charge function on your gun, you have many options that can change your approach to handling your opposition.

The levels are diverse and visually impressive, offering a variety of challenges and obstacles for players to overcome.

The companions are similar in the sense that they provide you with a buddy that, depending on what you choose will have a different ability attached to them. This title is one of those games, I could see myself coming back to over and over again over the coarse of time. Mighty Goose is a fantastic game with some depth providing lots of replay value and is well worth your time. Go out there and get your honk on! If you’ve played Metal Slug franchises you will find Mighty Goose familiar – when I pick up a machine gun and a chopper comes in dropping bombs. I dodged then shot upwards to crash it, it feels just like Metal Slug 2 but with a goose fire around. This game is a salute to the Metal Slug games, where you control a cute goose and pick up weapons like machine gun, shotgun or rockets, and vehicles including tank, motorcycle, warplane etc. When you hit enemies they will be sent flying and dramatically throw away weapons or have them spin so it looks funny enough. Besides the similarity, Mighty Goose is fun to play with a few unique ideas. This goose character is lovely and looks good in armor and vehicles, a new world unlocked after defeating the Void Lord which is underwater, seeing the goose surfing and driving a submarine is interesting. You can pick one companion and equip a special skill, companion will fight alongside and sit on top of the vehicle when the goose drives. The equipment ranges from bomb to shield to a weird alien hat, which I have yet to find out the real use. It’s easier than Metal Slug and player can pause the game at any time and access the shop, spending coins on purchasing weapons and vehicles for extra help.

I completed the game in 3 hours, rescued 1/2 hidden. I recommend this game to anyone who likes a cute character and 2D Platformers – But keep in mind this game is a salute to Metal Slug, but it would be unfair to compare the content of one game to a franchise.A side scrolling run and gun clearly inspired by the likes of Metal Slug, Mighty Goose is carried by its silly concept more than the game itself. The selection of weapons and vehicles is very slim, which is not itself an issue as they all fill a unique role, but there are several passive upgrades and secondary weapons that make things brainless in a game that is already very forgiving and low resistance. The vast majority of damage I took came from not being able to see enemies or their projectiles among the mess of visual effects the screen tends to be flooded by. The most interesting enemy in the game and the only one that actually felt like a fight was the final boss. But there’s a honk button and being a fat goose in a robot suit was funny. Overall, mileage will vary depending on what you’re looking for.
