Imagine if you took Bloodborne, in all its gothic glory, but used its Soulslike structure to retell the story of Pinocchio in a steampunk setting … oh, and imagine if Pinocchio looked like Timothée Chalamet. I promise that I’m not making this up or suffering from a Gamescom-induced hallucination; it’s an entirely real game that I played with my own two hands. It’s easy to write Lies of P off as either a joke or, even worse, a cheap knockoff. After all, it’s made by a small team that doesn’t have the same resources as a studio like FromSoftware. While I could feel those limitations during my hands-on demo with the game, Lies of P certainly isn’t a game to be taken lightly. It absolutely wiped the floor with me.Right from the opening moments of the demo, it was clear that developer Neowiz isn’t trying to hide its Bloodborne inspiration. I was loaded into some dreary European streets and immediately activated what was ostensibly a bonfire checkpoint (a text splash that accompanied it looked identical to what you’d see in a FromSoftware game). The similarities only stacked up from there. A health-restoring flask? Check. A map filled with shortcuts that would make it faster to move forward each time I died? Check. Runes earned from enemies that could be used to upgrade my stats, but that I’d drop and have to recover if I was killed? Check. I wouldn’t blame someone for thinking it’s a little shameless, but Lies of P does set itself apart in some key ways. For one, combat feels much faster and to the point compared to the slow, deliberate pace of FromSoftware’s games. I chose an agility-based class for my demo, which turned Pinocchio into a graceful fencer. I could quickly poke at standard enemies, slicing them up in just a few hits. By holding down the right trigger, I could charge up a quick flurry of jabs that would shred a foe even quicker. After spending so much time watching characters slowly trudge around in Souls games, that speed is a breath of fresh air. Lies of P is a challenging action game with a unique “lie” system where what you do & say as the main character dynamically affects gameplay. The game’s story is a unique, darker twist on the classic story of Pinocchio.

We can all agree that the Souls-like genre is not for everyone. The challenge that players face can turn away players from progressing and discovering new aspects of the late-game systems. What’s significant about these games is the overall lack of a difficulty option, which has been criticized in the past. In the case of the Neowiz-developed Lies of P, I don’t think they care much about this criticism. In fact, I think they only care about putting the player’s skills to the test during each and every encounter across this gothic world. Lies of P aims to retell the story of Pinocchio as players assume the role of the mechanical boy who dreams of becoming a human. However, this adventure takes a much darker approach to the story as he navigates the world of Belle Epoque in search of Geppetto and answers. I wasn’t able to experience very much of the story, so I’ll talk about gameplay. Lies of P ifs f**cking hard. I’m no stranger to this genre. I’d say I’m pretty okay at it, but I’ve never been punished like this, and I believe this is all by design. Other enemies might make themselves known, but as you close in to make the kill, you’re discovered by some other enemy on a roof. While the challenge is manageable by utilizing the various battle options available, Neowiz has no problem throwing you into a room of enemies and having you deal with it. It’s not random, either. The enemies are all well-placed to make you pay attention to your surroundings. There’s a sense of verticality in the levels I played that took some getting used to, but this game does its best to humble even the most skilled fans of the genre. There’s a contingent of Xbox owners out there who have spent the last seven years searching for a Bloodborne they can call their own. There is no shortage of Soulslikes on the platform – from Dark Souls to Elden Ring, to more recent efforts like Thymesia – but few contenders have come close to replicating the tone, tenor, and abject horror that unfurls throughout Yharnam. The next to try and fill the void will be Lies of P, a punishing action-RPG inspired by author Carlo Collodi’s 1883 classic Le avventure di Pinocchio – translated: The Adventures of Pinocchio.

‘Lying’ Quests and Multiple Endings

Conceptually, Lies of P is absurd. You play as Pinocchio, a puppet mechanoid who embarks on a horrifying journey to become human, and to locate his creator Mr. Geppetto in the fallen city of Krat. There are echoes of American McGee’s influence here, the divisive designer who quite infamously brought twisted subversions of the Lewis Carroll novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass to life with EA’s backing in the aughts. Lies of P caught my attention not because of its attempt to make me empathize with the struggles of a mischievous marionette who just wants to be a real boy, but because of its staggering presentation. I don’t know if it’s the dark Belle Époque aesthetics or the way that the camera lingers loosely behind Pinocchio as he pirouettes around, and pierces through, all manner of mechanized monstrosities, but I was hooked immediately. Like the vast majority of games that attempt to replicate the settings and styles perpetuated by FromSoftware, it’s a little rough around the edges – lacking that finesse and flourish that sets the Soulslikes that come from the source apart from the rest. But there’s definitely something in Lies of P that’s worth pursuing on the road to Xbox Game Pass release in 2023. Cities Skylines

Heavy weapons have more extensive wind-up animations that leave you vulnerable to quick strikes but feel incredible when they contact an enemy. Light thin-bladed weapons unleash a flurry of strikes and inflict copious damage when combined with secondary gadgets called Legion Arms. Dodging and parrying are essential to survival, with the latter opening up opponents to visceral strikes with precise timing. When you’re not in combat, you can speak with faceless citizens locked behind their doors and windows, complete with the nonsensical, riddle-like dialogue you might find familiar. I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Legion Arms are secondary gadgets unique to Lies Of P. Pinocchio appears humanoid in the game, except for his arm. A swappable extremity called a Legion Arm is in the place of a standard appendage. Pinocchio defaults to wearing the Iron Fist, a hardened extremity capable of big ol’ punches, but at least nine augmentations offer a bevy of neat abilities.

Experience interconnected procedural quests that play out depending on how you lie. These choices will then affect how the story ends.

The Fulminis unleashes a charge of electricity, the Flamberge’s barrel spews a violent cone of flame, and the Falcon Eyes is a hand cannon. But The Puppet String is the Legion Arm I used during my Gamescom demo, and it rules. It’s a Hookshot-like gadget you can fire toward enemies to reel them in or vice versa. Once upgraded, The Puppet String possesses an ability called Falling Chase, which is a potent acrobatic attack that launches you into the air before you come crashing down. I’m excited to see how other modifications affect gameplay, but the Legion Arms system should help players dial in their strategies and playstyles beyond standard equipment. Combat isn’t just a matter of dodging, blocking, and performing light or heavy attacks. By pressing the left trigger, Pinocchio can use different weapons tied to his mechanical arm (this game is as fun to play as it is to write about). My favorite tool was a grappling hook arm that would pull enemies toward me like Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion. Considering that Souls games tend to be about maintaining a safe distance from enemies, I appreciate that Lies of P encourages players to get more aggressive and rewards those who want to fight up close.

At first, that pace made the game feel like it might be easier than your typical Soulslike. Boy, was I wrong about that. Once I started encountering denser packs of enemies, the game thoroughly kicked my butt, constantly sending me back to the nearest checkpoint. But what I noticed is that I always felt like deaths were my own fault. I didn’t have moments where I was dying due to unexpected interactions or a mindless third-person camera. I expected a lot of rough edges here due to the studio size, but honestly, it feels more polished than your typical Dark Souls game in some respects. Though it has that advantage over FromSoftware, there are some places where the limitations can be felt. I really enjoy the idea of its steampunk European setting, but the slice I played wasn’t quite as rich with gothic detail as Bloodborne. The same goes for its enemies, which didn’t particularly stand out. However, I only saw a small piece of what the game has to offer. Considering the scale of the project, it’s an incredibly impressive feat – one born out of true reverence for the games that inspired it.

Pinocchio can equip two weapons at a time that alter things like attack speed and skills. In addition, there are various paths that players can choose from, including Crickets, Bastards, and Sweepers, which alter the playstyle. Further customization can be found in the P-Organ, where players spend Quartz to upgrade abilities and activate various skills. Strangely, even though the game is so challenging, these menus initiate a pause, so you can take all the time you want when customizing your loadout. Other aspects of the experience were largely reminiscent of other Souls-like. You can dodge, parry, and counter enemies, which is standard fair for the genre. However, it differs in the general moveset of Pinocchio and the enemies. Given the mechanical nature of this world, the movement reflects this with almost doll-like attacks coming from enemies, which makes reading their movement difficult. During my time with the demo, I was killed by plenty of enemies, but I was definitely surprised by how many different types there were. I hope this continues to be the case because as soon as I got comfortable with one enemy type, a new one would appear and force me to adapt. Unfortunately, I couldn’t beat the boss.
