The developers at MS Games promise that they used a gameplay-first approach and the historical context is presented in a way, which doesn’t interfere with the game experience. The title itself raised a lot of doubts in me, but I really like war climates and I didn’t want to give up after the first or second attempt. The reviewed Land of War: The Beginning is the debut production of the Polish studio MS Games. The premiere of the PC edition took place on June 10, and distribution on consoles is also planned. I know that this title had a small budget, that for the first game of the studio, I should approach it with a little more understanding. I tried to do this, but there are a number of solutions in this title that I just don’t understand. However, this does not mean that everything is weak, absolutely. We’ll get to that right away. It’s a pity that the main character is an average Kowalski. The creators were strongly inspired by the achievements of the creators of Call of Duty, which can be seen practically from the very beginning.

This sounds very bad. I have no objections to the choice of voices for the characters, but in these statements you do not feel that we are somewhere on the front. A moment later we get a rifle in hand. We start with a real earthquake. The attack on Mokra, where we are almost immediately knocked down by the explosion of a huge projectile. We have to repel the German attack, hide in the trenches, then destroy the “oncoming” tanks, which in fact only stand still and shoot at us from… a rifle. The action develops very dynamically, but the way it is conducted often bores us. There is no coherent element here. Every now and then the commander shouts to us “Kowalski go here, Kowalski do that” and we feel like his messenger, not one of many soldiers of the Polish army. You can see that the developers wanted to squeeze literally every war scenario into the game. The plot leads us to the dirty streets of besieged Warsaw or abandoned Modlin. The locations in the intention of the creators were thought out very interestingly, because we visit forests, valleys, cities, but it’s all so gray and not very attractive to the player. However, I must praise the studio for a very accurate reproduction of any war arsenal or uniforms. They have been refined with due diligence and you can see that a lot of work has been put into it. Some weapons have quite poor recoil, sometimes we don’t even feel the power of the rifle, but this is basically the greatest advantage of Land of War.It happens that one shot is enough to knock down the enemy, and other times we aim at him several times and we can’t send him to the ground.

Collision detection problems are often visible here. And “checking off” checkpoints can be irritating – we run to the big cannon to destroy the tank, and it… suddenly explodes. It’s the same with the second one. It was supposed to be so effective, but it only discourages further fun due to excessive linearity. There are also some problems with collision detection, sometimes we get stuck on fences, tents or chests with weapons. However, I am glad that the game strongly focuses on realism. There is no automatic reload, and life does not regenerate itself. We must remember this so as not to die too quickly. Because if it comes to that … a completely incomprehensible system of placing checkpoints enters the action. It’s not like we’re going back a minute or two when we go through a long section. Absolutely. Sometimes we start the whole adventure from the beginning! Especially annoying are such situations at the start, when we are still learning the game. The gameplay is therefore very linear, but if it was done well, it’s half the trouble. Worse, however, that here most of the elements are quite average. At every turn you can see that this production was created with a very poor budget.The characters have terrible facial expressions and weak, stiff animations. Our opponents in the reviewed Land of War are a clone army that behaves without any particular idea, moving and falling in basically the same way – regardless of the circumstances. The soldiers marching here and there in a platoon resemble a clone army. All this destroys immersion and makes us a little reluctant to explore this dirty and terrifying world. The graphics itself is not the ugliest, the game works well on maximum settings even on a gaming laptop, but there is nothing overwhelming here. The explosions are just a regular, two-dimensional texture, the whole thing has a greyish-gray filter applied to it, and as a result, it doesn’t knock you down. Unfortunately, there are many problems with the sound and the overall technical refinement of the production. It happened to me that the game went to the desktop. Other times the dialogue stopped playing. The camera, on the other hand, shakes all the time even with a minimal explosion.

Whether it was supposed to imitate the effect of heavy equipment and difficulties in moving around different terrains – I have no idea. Anyway, it turned out pretty mediocre. However, let’s not expect miracles, here you can see that military enthusiasts got down to creating the game and it was this aspect that focused all their efforts.Lovers of such climates will certainly be delighted, because some weapons shoot really well and there are quite a lot of them. We get the legendary Vis pistol, the Browning machine gun or a prototype semi-automatic gun with a proudly sounding name – Maroszka. It’s hard to expect the quality presented by, for example, Medal of Honor from a debut game. Land of War is more of a spiritual heir to Mortyr. A product whose brothers often dominated the lists of the worst games on the market. It’s not that bad here. This is actually a good foundation for future productions. If only the placement of checkpoints, character swimming, wooden animations, sloppy sounds and terrible dialogues weren’t so irritating.

We could talk about a pretty good production.I myself was quite tired after the final fragments and did not want to go back to this production, which is unfortunately not the best recommendation. I can recommend the reviewed Land of War only to fans of war climates and lovers of militaria, who would like to see rifles or weapons from that period more than the production itself. There are a lot of them here and they have been refined with great attention to detail. This is undoubtedly the greatest advantage of the production reviewed today. I keep my fingers crossed for MS Games, I hope that the next titles of the studio will have a larger budget. Maybe it’s worth harnessing some crowdfunding action? Kickstarter seems like a pretty good idea. It will also be useful to invest in someone who knows the technical implementation of dubbing (because Jacek Rozenek is the best here, but you still do not feel or hear that it is him) . Better animators will also come in handy. Can I recommend this title to someone? Honestly, not much. Along with the unusual war period, Land of War explores weapons never or rarely used in games before. Some of those weapons were prototypes only at the start of the war.
