Hero Pop is free, but it has in-app store for buying coins, which in turn can be used in speeding up bonus gifts (as they are given daily) and purchasing lives. If you are familiar with Candy Crush Saga, they have the same limited lives, stopping you from retrying levels you cannot complete. You have to either wait for the lives to replenish or buy your way through it. Hero Pop’s core gameplay is great. However, it does get overwhelming as you progress. It is not about difficulty either, it just that there are so many things to consider, and so many elements thrown in. If there is such a thing as game overdesign, this is it. Imagine all of the things you could have on a Match3 game, and imagine them actually existing, and then you have Hero Pop. The graphics of this game is colorful and cute, ample for this game and this genre. Nothing spectacular, but they are good to look at. The music is fine, does not get in the way, probably for the best. There are 100 levels in this game and you will get stuck in levels and such. Hero Pop is a nice-looking game, but perhaps it lays on the cutes a little thick, with bright primary colours and gentle xylophone and flute music. I did respect its weirdness though. Playful graphics and the cutesy (and catchy) music give Hero Pop an inviting (and intended) family feel, it takes a bit of adult introspection (and a bit of luck) to master several of the puzzles. Power-ups are also available once a certain number of level are completed. A high powered rocket that blasts through balloons is the first weapon you’ll achieve, and after earning a healthy amount of doubloons you can purchase these power-ups at your whim. Since you’ll only have a set number of moves to utilize on each level, knowing when to use these power-ups is of paramount importance. If you arbitrarily tap on the rocket, it may blast a select set of balloons you may have needed to create a super balloon and set you back several moves. Each Hero Pop decision matters, and that’s why my time in the clouds is far from over. The game’s major flaw is its freemium mechanic. It also takes way too long (30 minutes) to refresh one of your lives, so unless you go on a major puzzle streak or don’t mind a few in-app purchases, you’ll be relegated to brief play sessions with Hero Pop.
