Played just a bit, but came to say that playing on Steam Deck OLED is wonderful so far! The whimsical art style is gorgeous. Really pretty color palette. I’ve seen some Hades//Animal Crossing//Cult of the Lamb references in reviews. As someone who has totaled *hundreds* of hours across all three of those games (on Nintendo Switch), I’d put this squarely in the “magical girl” Cult-of-the-Lamb-type category so far. Roguelite runs, rescuing plantlings, and you return from runs to build a sentient garden. Hella cute cozy vibes, and they managed to come up with a really creative way to make combat non-violent. 🙂 With the saturation of the cozy games market, it’s difficult to find something that feels really new and fresh, but so far, I feel like Grimoire Groves has nailed that. i wanted to start writing this review a few hours ago, but i just couldn’t stop playing the game. grimoire groves is a rogue-lite dungeon crawler with whimsical art and vibrant colors. the gameplay revolves around restoring the garden and forest, and each run takes you into the forest to water adorable plants and gather materials. these plants feel like newborn babies, they just stick to you and ask for attention. at times, you’ll have 30 mushrooms clinging to you, which is both chaotic and endearing. you can unlock new skills as you progress and swap between them, which adds nice variety. of course, it’s not all good. i have to be honest… the first hour felt confusing, and the story is quite weak, which, in my opinion, should be a priority in a cozy game. the dialogue feels limited, and the gameplay can get repetitive since it’s very grindy. while some grindy games let you zone out with a podcast in the background, grimoire groves isn’t really one of them. it’s fast-paced, and there are always a million plants demanding your attention.

that said, i don’t think it’s a hard game, just one that requires a lot of engagement. personally, i like that it keeps my full focus, since i usually zone out in games like this. this way, it helps me escape and disconnect from real life stress, which is exactly what i want from a game like this. plus, it’s really, really addictive. i just wish there was better storytelling because with stronger writing, this could be an incredible game. as it stands, i’d rate it a 3.5 out of 5. if you enjoy big combos, stacking tons of plants, and the satisfying feeling of *killing* planting them all at once, it’s definitely worth checking out!
