Though it is listed as a tower defense game, it’s a bit of a mislabel. Autobattler seems a little closer, but honestly I’m not sure what would work as a quick analogy. There’s a single lane that enemies will march down, attempting to reach and destroy your tower. Your job is to use skills and summon your own army to push them back. What makes Forest Heroes fun for a Roguelike addict is that there are many ways to acquire power, and, especially with the latest update, many avenues to success.

Your skills, for example, can be upgraded, adding multiple extra copies of it, or reducing their cost to make them more spammable. Your units can be upgraded to reduce their cost or increase their stats, or can be given a hat to give them special effects or further stat boosts. Then there’s relics with a wide variety of effects, including unit-specific relics that can boost all copies of a specific unit card. There’s various mechanisms, like dodging, bleeding, poison, sturdiness, and almost all creatures have a specific use or niche in which they excel. That’s not to say they’re all perfectly balanced, there’s a few units that I just wouldn’t really pick up and some that are -always- good to pick up, but I’ve seen a LOT of units pull some serious weight with the right builds. I’ve played enough to unlock everything, including the higher difficulties. I’m not a hardcore min-maxer, so the game’s difficulty is slanted more towards letting the player have fun, while the higher ‘curse’ level is aimed at providing a solid challenge. But despite having done everything, I still come back to this game just to have another run, just to see if I can break it even more. Maybe I can push a Ballista Tortoise to a greater extreme, making it to absurd damage per hit, or get a Lemmings card to summon a colossal army of little rodents. Maybe a Wisent just falls asleep on the frontline, recovering health while it naps while enemies damage themselves on its ‘Spikes’. It’s a fun game with great potential, and hopefully it’ll continue to get updated for a bit longer. At the very least, there’s a third playable character in the works, which means a new set of skills to supplement your armies with!
