The main character must be beholden to some kind of eldritch magic that the others are not, because his nail gun never runs out of nails and he has an endless supply of boards and sheet metal to fix up any problem. Check his utility belt, I bet that’s a bag of holding in there. If you start getting hungry there is a nice supply of apples all around you in your humble apple orchard, or you could do a little cooking on the range once you find more ingredients. Or, you could get a wife. A wife will make more filling meals for your empty farmer’s belly, and be able to provide you an heir for this barren wasteland. Because, obviously, that’s all wives are good for. It honestly just feels like you got a hireling for free. You can hire others within the game to take care of various field tasks for you, but after some bits of dialogue with a woman and marrying her, you’ve got one that constantly cooks and provides sustenance for you without much input. I know the standard joke here is to say that that’s what married life is actually like, but it’s not. The relationships within this game just feel so, so shallow and like I’m farming for robots. The NPCs even move like robots with jerky 90-degree arm movements, and their voices sound like they’re going to teach me my farming ABCs whether I like it or not. Famer’s Dynasty is supposed to be centrally focused on this one main farmer, but it completely sucks out all of the emotion and empathy out of its character interactions.

One of the main defenses I’ve seen on the Steam forums for the lack of choice when it comes to your farmer’s gender or even their spouse’s gender, is that while Farmer’s Dynasty is a simulation game, you’re essentially playing it from the point of view of an actual character who doesn’t subscribe to those preferences. And honestly, that’s completely fine and justified. I get it-it’s the character. What’s not okay, is using it as an excuse for bad writing and interactions in general. There is nothing about the story or its characters that keep me coming back to play the game. It feels like a half-baked attempt to provide the player with some interaction because they aimed to put in this social aspect of the game that feels like you just slapped some beans on a burnt piece of toast. It doesn’t taste good, and it doesn’t feel right. Farmer’s Dynasty would have been a pretty solid farming simulation game had it just stopped there. While I applaud the developers for trying to introduce a little life into the game with a social system, in my opinion, it actually ended up working against them. The character animations and voices are robotic and there is very little changing dialogue over the course of the game. There was nothing inherently wrong with the base mechanics for a simulation, other than the magical tools, but there also wasn’t anything about them that stood out as particularly good to me. There is beauty to be found in boredom and a magic in the mundane. Unfortunately, in the case of Farmer’s Dynasty, it doesn’t matter how hard it tries, it can’t satiate the same sentiments. ‘More than just an agricultural simulation’ is the tagline, and whilst this may be true, it isn’t necessarily a good thing. To preface this review, it is worth noting that real-life and farming sims are some of my favourite. I enjoy the opportunities that they offer: I can take a laid back, relaxed approach where time is no object, yet I also enjoy setting goals for each day and grafting to get them done. There are many games new and old that offer the same thing with such heightened success that it makes perfect sense for all games to follow suit. You only have to look as far as Animal Crossing: New Horizons to see the market there is for a game where people are happy to spend 30 minutes to an hour each day collecting individual fruit from trees. Or even Stardew Valley, where players till individual squares of soil to plant a crop and tend to it over the course of a week. For the purpose of this review, we have placed it at the bottom as it is rather misleading, and we hope the words shared here offer ample reason to take the scenes within that trailer with a pinch of salt. Farmer’s Dynasty has a lot on offer – this cannot be disputed. It’s an open-world, in-depth farming simulator that blends building and construction, community relationships, and budgeting. Put simply, if all was as it should and could have been, we would be looking at a very comprehensive and enjoyable simulator. As it stands, though, it is a cash-grab title of epic proportions. So much so that there is a reluctance to dive into the finer details of this game for fear of making it sound more appealing than it actually is to play. From the off, there is a tell-tale sign that all is not well – the loading times are far too long. On its own, this is something that can be overlooked in favour of an enjoyable and engaging experience. Unfortunately, Farmer’s Dynasty can’t be afforded this leniency. Poor visuals and even poorer performance confound the idea that this game just was not built for the Nintendo Switch. It is not uncommon for games to be this way, and The Outer Worlds is just one recent example. Movement feels sluggish and jerky, whether walking around your farm or driving about the town, and it is a permanent reminder that the game is slow and cumbersome. Safe in the knowledge I enjoy the mundane associated with farming sims, the overwhelming feeling is that tasks take too long. This isn’t just because of the aforementioned performance issues, but also because the tasks themselves are too long. An early job is to resurrect the farm you’ve inherited by repairing the buildings. It would have been quicker to knock every building to the ground and rebuild than it would have been to repair every wooden truss of the attic in the house. To truly feel the frustration associated with this task, one would need to experience it for themselves. In short, however, it rivals any game for the title of the most anticlimactic start to a video game. You had to repair every single detail of every outbuilding, be it gaps in brickwork, glass in the greenhouse, cracks in the floorboards. I could go on There is a plethora of tools at your disposal, and some moments of ingenuity, but there are too many issues to make any of it worthwhile. The idea that you have to build your own scaffolding to reach some of the taller parts of the buildings is superb, but it just isn’t fun. It gets in the way, is too fiddly, and isn’t rewarding enough. As stated by the developers themselves, the game is about so much more than farming.

The dialogue arcs are poorly designed, and a very interesting premise has been stripped back to a game that lacks charm or enjoyment. Farmer’s Dynasty is ambitious in design but dire in its delivery. It’s a game that could have been so much more, and, on the surface, it seemed to have learned from the games that had come before it. In reality, this is not the case and with an asking price of £39.99, I hope that the only time you waste on this game is the time spent reading this review. Who hasn’t once dreamt of living off the land – just getting away from it all and getting back to basics? Enter Farmer’s Dynasty: it’s the closest you’ll get to being a farmer without actually getting your hands dirty. From the very start of Farmer’s Dynasty, you’re given the reins to your grandfather’s old farm. The game is centred around you growing your farming empire through ploughing, cultivating, seeding, and harvesting crops as you invest in more and more land. But unlike other games in the genre like Farming Simulator, Farmer’s Dynasty is much more than a tractor-driving farming sim; it’s just as much of a life sim.

There are NPCs to chat to, and you even have the potential to get married and have children. But of course, in order to live a comfortable life, you need to first ensure your farm is in order. And even though the locals have been looking after your granddad’s farm in the meantime, it’s seriously run down. Luckily, your character may not be much of a farmer yet, but he’s a great handyman and can fix pretty much anything. Building and fixing in Farmer’s Dynasty is as easy as looking at the problem, selecting the right tool and then pressing the correct button. It’s very simple to get to grips with but can be time consuming; the farm is in quite a state after all. Before you can get started on your new life as a farmer, you’ll need to fix up everything on the land, including the house, all its rooms and the roof. The fixing up section can be a little tedious, but it’s fulfilling to see everything come together – a feeling that Farmer’s Dynasty offers in abundance. Once the farm is fixed up, it’s time to chase the farmer’s dream. Although your grandfather didn’t actually leave you any equipment to help with the farm, the NPCs spotted around the map are happy to help out; they’ll trade their old equipment for work. In doing so, Farmer’s Dynasty helps you to learn the ropes of the game gradually without overwhelming you with too much information at once. Each individual quest will tackle one area of farming, rewarding you with a key piece of machinery, one by one.

These quests can be pretty time consuming, and don’t expect to cut any corners; Farmer’s Dynasty is a life simulator after all. As you play, you’ll encounter a wide variety of NPCs to speak to, each presenting you with a range of dialogue options to choose from. Though these conversations are voiced, unfortunately the voice acting is horrendous; void of life, emotion, and feeling. It feels like Siri having a conversation with Alexa – there are moments when it is laugh-out-loud awful. It’s a serious misstep, but thankfully doesn’t ruin the overall enjoyment of the game. But once you get through primary school pantomime-level of voice acting segments, you’ll have all the necessary tools at your disposal. Your farm is a huge sandbox, and it can take around five minutes to drive from one side to another. And that’s in a pickup truck that goes 60mph – many of your farming vehicles will have a maximum speed of 23mph. You’ll find yourself slowly crawling around much of Farmer’s Dynasty’s map, but it never feels too much like a chore; it’s the farmer’s life, which is all about putting effort in to reap rewards. It helps that map is really well laid out, with a variety of things to do and see. The actual farming mechanics of Farmer’s Dynasty are also time consuming, but rewarding. There are four steps to getting the fields ready for you to plant crop seeds, with each step requiring you to drive around your field with a particular tool.
