When it’s done roasting our mutual enemies, I blow the beast up with sniper-rockets. Suddenly, there’s a 16-bit style sex montage. Nobody in their right mind would create something as wonderfully absurd as Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon – so I’m glad someone in charge at Ubisoft is at least a little nuts. Don’t go in expecting a traditional Far Cry game. Blood Dragon is philosophically, tonally, and mechanically the fundamental opposite of its straight-faced predecessors. It’s like entering the imagination of a nine-year-old boy. Or my mind at age 25, honestly: These are action figures and super-powers come to life for an action-packed six-hours of open-world first-person shooting. He doesn’t get tired from running at inhuman speeds, he doesn’t need air to breathe, he can survive any fall, and he rattles off more one-liners than a Paul Verhoeven anthology – all to the tune of a groovy synth soundtrack. Knowingly awful writing, rich with eye-rolling puns and delightfully inappropriate profanity, is a reminder that the dopey dialogue of ‘80s action movies is still a special sort of hilarious. These silly mission objectives, which reference everything from Die Hard and D20s to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Aliens, are a rare delight in first-person shooters. It isn’t able to keep the A-material jokes coming the whole time, though. Certain gags get reused more often than would be ideal, which can stall the comedic momentum. But what occasionally brings Blood Dragon’s pace to a halt most is its cutscenes – the 16-bit story scenes have a habit of overstaying their welcome.

A DIFFERENT BREED OF MULTIPLAYER

Of course, things get back on track the moment the action begins again, because this overpowered badass is so entertaining to play. Rex starts out so strong, in fact, that his upgrade tree (a linear, simplified version of Far Cry 3’s) isn’t terribly rewarding. Earned XP unlocks different melee takedowns, but you’re very well equipped from the start. Instead of meaningful progression, Rex’s guns and their upgrades define his style. An exaggerated sense of empowerment comes with carrying more grenades than is reasonable, laser machine-guns, quad-barrel shotguns with flaming shells, and some seriously devastating, hysterical tools you couldn’t pay me to spoil. It’s the blood dragons themselves, however, that create the most memorable and comical moments. The laser-breathing reptiles are easily baited into attacking enemy outposts. On the default difficulty, letting a dragon do your dirty work for you makes combat far too easy for experienced players. When the difficulty gets cranked up to hard, it’s an essential and rewarding tool. I’d just dropped the kids off at school when one of the fathers asked me what games I was playing. He’s no gamer but I thought he might at least gel with the concept of Blood Dragon: a sci-fi shooter and heavy pastiche of ’80s action films, voiced by Michael Biehn. You know, out of The Terminator. Neon, synths, one-liners, chrome, ultraviolence, pixel graphics. He looked confused, maybe appalled. I faltered. “It’s kind of, well, a joke.” He changed the subject. You know how good a joke is when you tell it to someone else. Turns out that Blood Dragon’s scattershot storm of references barely holds together in the cold light of a school run.

AN ISLAND OF DANGER AND DISCOVERY

It’s presented as if playing on a VHS tape, but the story is told through crude sort-of 8-and-16-bit cutscenes, and the game itself is modern 3D. It references 18-rated movies, while the trailer harked toward He-Man. Despite how incredibly hard it tries, it rarely raised much of a smile, although I loved Power Glove’s pitch-perfect soundtrack, which blends parody with homage so well it’s actually good to listen to. So thematically Blood Dragon’s a bit of a mess, but it’s still enormous fun because it’s actually just a tuned up, pared-down Far Cry 3 that’s even less willing to get in the way of uncomplicated mayhem. You start with its four core weapons: a shotgun, assault and sniper rifles, and handgun. You can run like the wind, jump like a kangaroo, and you don’t take fall damage. You’re a Cyber Commando, a resurrected soldier that crosses T-1000 with Robocop Call of Duty

And you’re out to wreak manly justice on your doublecrossing CO, who wears a chainmail vest just like Bennett’s in Commando. Action is pressed to the fore: the island is thick with battles between your faction, the Scientists, and the bad guys, and it frequently feels more than a little Serious Sam. There are also wandering dinosaurs – blood dragons – which fire lasers from their eyes. They’re the main addition to FC3 – tough and powerful, but you soon learn you can lure them towards enemies to help you out. They’re not interesting to fight, however, simply bullet sponges against your arsenal of miniguns and health packs, and a missed opportunity to power up the ecosystem. More smartly, the island’s scattering of collectibles and missions found at cleared outposts unlock weapon upgrades, leading to a succinct sense of progression.

USE THE MAP EDITOR

Despite the colourful setup and all the neon accents, Blood Dragon is set in a bafflingly drab world of permanent night, as if anxious to conceal the fact that most of its assets are reused from FC3. The theme, after all, is just a veneer on that game. Yet by the end you realise that its haphazard portrayal of trashy macho culture actually fits the series’ fixation with the nature of heroism and violence rather well. Chances are that you’ve thoroughly enjoyed yourself, too. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition isn’t a total farce since its humor and charm can hold up independently of its technical shortcomings. The overly silly story has a fair share of decent one-liners and purposely cheesy scenes that make it a joy to pay attention to. Thankfully, it also doesn’t overstay its welcome, a rarity in modern Ubisoft titles.

Aliens and The Terminator’s Michael Biehn also delivers his grumbly lines well and fits the hypermasculine badass profile that was prominent in ‘80s films. His machismo both works for parody as well as an honest portrayal of the action stars he’s parodying, making him a great fit either way. Combined with some solid visual gags, Blood Dragon Classic Edition is still a relatively funny game that commits to its bit and only overdoes it when matching the ‘80s excess it is poking fun at.Most of Blood Dragon’s simplicity works, but it is a double-edged neon blade. Being a downloadable spin-off at its core, Blood Dragon condenses the Far Cry experience down to its essence and creates a shorter and snappier progression loop that doesn’t go on unnecessarily. But it can also be limiting as there aren’t as many options or gameplay systems as, say, Far Cry 6.

There’s also not much to do outside of clearing out bases and doing rudimentary side missions either, which makes the world feel empty. The actual blood dragons roaming around are the only aspect that is genuinely new since that sort of hulking, Big Daddy-esque beast hasn’t been replicated in the series since. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition is a competent game trapped in a crude port. The list of technical shortcomings is inexcusable, even if it doesn’t call itself a proper remaster. And even though rereleasing games isn’t without value, Blood Dragon Classic Edition should have been more than that.Its humor and style have withstood the sands of time rather well and its gameplay, while basic, wouldn’t require much to bring it more in line with modern standards. It didn’t need to be fully remade, but it definitely deserved to be more than a hasty port  Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered
