The Backrooms are approaching mainstream appeal right now for reasons best left to sociologists and psychologists to explain. All I know is that the idea of walking alone through endless, vacant, windowless office rooms and hallways looking for a way out (that may or may not exist) is just the type of existential dread that I crave, despite my therapist’s protests. So I’ve wandered the halls of five of the best Backrooms games you can find online right now, and I’ve returned to say that if real-life corporate dronery hasn’t crushed your spirit to your satisfaction just yet, go ahead and no-clip yourself into these games and finish the job. And be careful when you no-clip. If you can hear it, it definitely has already heard you. Absolutely one of the best Backrooms experiences you can find anywhere. GAMEPLAY MECHANICS.

While some purists might take issue with the fact that its levels past the first one feature liminal spaces instead of actual Backrooms, be assured, the overall concept doesn’t change. Each level (and sub level) has its own distinct character and challenges. To progress you’ll need to adapt your approach from one level to the next, while battling increasingly difficult “entities.” It thankfully has a basic save system to keep track of your progress. The only criticism is that there’s a bit of a learning curve to the game and some levels don’t have actual exits (just survive as long as possible!). Upon reaching zero health you will be sent to the game over screen where you can either return to your previous checkpoint, or return to the main menu. You can restore your health by using Almond Water, or by using a First Aid Kit. Stamina Your stamina dictates how long you can sprint without tiring out, with the standard sprint lasting 5 seconds, however you can increase its duration by 20% by picking up artifacts. Stamina is the only statistic that is shown in the default HUD of the game. Your stamina does not return while walking, instead you must either stand in place or consume sugar in order to restore your stamina. Normally walking is fast enough to outpace any entity, however sprinting is an easy way to lose the entities altogether.Your sanity is one of the most important resources in the backrooms. As your sanity is lowered, the frequency of which dullers spawn increases, your FOV begins to increase, your screen turns red, along with the possibility of hallucinations occurring. If at any point your sanity reaches Zero, you will begin taking damage over time until you restore it. Some aspects of the game are based entirely on these writings, while others are their own concepts spliced in to make the experience much more cohesive. Enter The Backrooms is planned to evolve and update far into the future. There are dozens of concepts for levels, entities, and items that could and most likely will be added. Stability is a hidden mechanic that only affects the player when they are in negative levels of the backrooms. As you spend time within the negative levels of the backrooms, your stability will lower, only restoring once you reach a different level. As your stability lowers, your vision will be impaired by glitch effects and your HUD elements will shake. The negative effects of low stability can also be triggered by accumulating many artifacts on a single floor, due to the fact that artifacts increase your maximum stability, but not your current stability. Upon reaching zero stability, you will be sent back to level zero of the backrooms.

This is basically a hidden gem of a game. Don’t let the graphics deter you – sometimes the graphics even add to the ambiance. This game has some of the best sanity mechanics and note mechanics in any game I’ve ever seen. It’s not perfect, but with more updates to come, this game can only get better. I want to make it clear now, I’m not done with the game, I’m on Level 11, but the game has only gotten better as it went along with few exceptions. As for the developer, if you’re reading this, here’s some of my feedback I want to direct towards you: Don’t change how the sanity meter works, and don’t display it on the hud. It’s perfect the way it is, and I feel like placing it on the hud will take away what makes it work.(I often forget that sanity is a mechanic, and this causes me to think some of the effects are actually happening for brief periods of time, and those are the coolest parts of the game for me) Decrease Nuller spawn rates and spawn in more unique enemies instead. Nullers get both boring and annoying after a while, and some of the best scares come from the Party Goers and The Boilers. And, weirdly, those are only other enemies I’ve seen (though I think I’ve witnessed the effects of others.

I felt compelled to put at least one entry on this list that was completely different from the others and Toiletrooms makes the list just for its enjoyable weirdness. It deviates from the Backrooms aesthetic rather liberally, but I don’t think most people will mind. It can be completed very quickly (under an hour on first playthrough). Even so, it’s still worth your brief time and a lot of fun. I personally enjoyed the creative environment and gameplay, and while Toiletrooms features lo-fi graphics, its basic art and sound design still manages to work well in a game that packs a number of genuine thrills. There’s a uniqueness to the game that I think everybody would appreciate but there’s not much to say without spoiling such a short game, so I’ll leave it for the reader to explore.
