But before that, you are given a decision to do which are self-imposed game restrictions. You can choose from a list of things that make the game more difficult to varying degrees. However, if it is your first time playing, I would highly advise against it, as those kinds of restrictions are usually for second playthroughs and would dampen the overall first impression. You can choose whether the hero is male and thus whether they have an older sister or younger sister. Or you can choose to be female and choose whether to have an older brother or younger brother. But that’s not all. You have to decide their race which ranges from Human, Elf, Dwarf, Wendi. Pukuripo, and Ogre (Yes, I know it is six despite the title, humans are probably inherent and not counted in the awakening part of the title. Well, there are even more races in the online version.) The starting race you choose affects how hard the game is in the beginning, with different allies joining you at different times, so there is replay value there, at least. Lastly, you decide what the actual name of the hero and their sibling will be. I chose a human male with a younger sister, which I named(Mina), respectively. I chose those names as I have seen them used officially in some screenshots, so I felt it gave them some foundation as established characters. I also copied the look of the cover for the hero for the same reason. Battles are traditional and turn-based, which happen mostly in a field or dungeon which you start one via a symbol encounter. You can run by holding the R button on the Nintendo Switch version and similar buttons on other systems. It is a very good idea to run in the field to avoid enemies should you choose.

Before You Start

If you have played Dragon Quest before, the basics are mostly the same in the beginning. The options from Fight will open up more when more people join your party, and you can switch job classes. The menu reads from top to bottom: Fight, Change Strategy, Switch, Setting, Escape. The graphics are in the style of Chibi, or small miniaturized figures. Some harsher critics may feel that they are outdated or not improved enough despite the art style. Some also may have wanted traditional graphics as seen in the online version. I personally had no problem with the graphics and was okay with the Chibi style. Music The game features music from acclaimed musician Koichi Sugiyama as does all the other Dragon Quests. It is hard to imagine a Dragon Quest without him—Or Yuuji Horii as lead designer or Akira Toriyama as character designer for that matter. Nevertheless, the music is great which is no surprise. That’s Not All Folks Dragon Quest X as stated many times before originally was and still is an online RPG. Does that mean this game cover all the versions the online version up until the offline release? The answer is sadly no. To sum it up, the game covers up until about version 2 while the online version is about version 6 currently. However, there are still some exclusive offline episodes so to speak found in the game. Dragon Quest X, although not as expansive as the online version that continues to this day in Japan, is still a great RPG. Some may say that it doesn’t tick all the boxes that turns a great RPG into a great Dragon Quest, but I still like the game and recommend it. There are plenty of things to do side-quest-wise, so the game gives you your money’s worth. Thanks to the hard work of a passionate group of fans, Dragon Quest X’s story cutscenes for Version 1 have been fully translated into English.

A Monster Has Appeared!

First released on the Nintendo Wii in 2012, Dragon Quest X stands out from the rest of the beloved JRPG series by being an MMO instead of a single-player game. It takes players to the far-away fantasy world of Astoltia, where they start their journey as a human who is forced to transfer their soul into another body following a deadly attack by Lord of Hell Nelgel. From there, player characters must gather mystical gemstones to seal Nelgel while utilizing a mix of real-time combat gameplay and a character-developing job system. Dragon Quest X has been ported to virtually every Nintendo system since the Wii, as well as PC, Android and iOS compatible devices, and the PlayStation 4. However, Dragon Quest X hasn’t received a western release despite its critical acclaim and a strong desire from Dragon Quest fans to try the MMO out for themselves. Square Enix stated that there are currently no plans for a Western Dragon Quest X Online or Offline release, but now a group of dedicated fans has decided to matters into their own hands. Earlier this week, Dragon Quest X player Exalin Excels posted an update video on their YouTube channel for the DQX Clarity project, an effort to fully translate Dragon Quest X’s in-game dialogue into English for English-speaking fans to enjoy. In this latest update, Exalin announced that while the game’s overworld NPC dialogue is still being machine translated by the AH Kmon program, all of Dragon Quest X’s story dialogue for Version 1 has been translated by hand. “Machine translation will never be a substitute for straight-up knowing Japanese,” Exalin explained in a later quote to Screen Rant editor Austin King. “But having phrases and terms saved within the machine add some context back into it, making when you DO have to use machine translation much cleaner.”

Where Do I Go Now, Where Do I Go?

Exalin also thanked the team responsible for the DQX Clarity project for their hard work in assuring that fans who don’t understand Japanese will be able to play and enjoy Dragon Quest X. He also directed curious viewers toward dqxabbey.com, a website created by Dragon Quest X fan @sevithian containing information about the resources behind the DQX Clarity project and links to tools needed to play the game in the West. While Square Enix still has no plans to release Dragon Quest X in the West or any other non-Japanese-speaking territory, there was a special Dragon Quest X/Final Fantasy XIV crossover event last year that served as the closest many Western players have gotten to experiencing Dragon Quest X firsthand. Dubbed the “Breaking Brick Mountains,” this special event offered players unlockable rewards modeled after iconic Dragon Quest monsters. Gran Turismo 7 PS5

Mobile game DQ Tact also recently offered fans a peek at DQX content. However, these small mash-ups are no substitute for a full localization of DQX, and arguably made Square Enix’s refusal to release it in the West all the more frustrating. Thankfully, these fans can now experience Dragon Quest X in English thanks to the hard work and dedication of the DQXClarity project team, who have now managed to translate all of Version 1’s cutscenes by hand. There is still much more work to be done in translating Dragon Quest X, but this talented group of fans deserves credit for providing players with the Engish localization that Square Enix is seemingly unwilling to produce. Well having played the game now, I think it’s much more likely that they’re holding off onto an announcement until next year’s big update (it’s literally called “large update”) currently scheduled for June, I believe.

Currently you can buy the base game for 8,500 yen or the base game plus the update for around 12,000 yen. The base game contains Dragon Quest X in an offline state very similar to the way it was released originally for the Wii, but not entirely so. It leaves in a lot of the updates that version 2 introduced, some already implemented, but more of them already there to see like a tantalizing hint barely out of reach that will be accessible once the update is released next year. One example is monster taming and having them as party members. The facilities are everywhere in the game, but you can’t actually do it yet. That was originally implemented in version 2. Moreover the original version of Dragon Quest X back in 2012 on the Wii ended with a very satisfying conclusion, but since it was designed to be continued in an online updated way, left unanswered questions.
