After a hundred hours smashing demons, I’ve kicked Diablo to the curb a couple times and I’m thoroughly reacquainted with the good and the bad that the most revered game in Blizzard’s action RPG series has to offer. In the face of concessions that modern games have made towards fun, Diablo 2’s insistence on grind and unforgiving systems and 20-year-old bugs can just make me feel… tired. Satisfied, but tired. The completely redone graphics of Resurrected do so much more than a simple homage to the original game, adding a whole third dimension as well as 4K-friendly environment details that were just out of the question in the 800×600 2D graphics of 2000. Locations like the Monastery Gates in Act 1, an outdoor area that was always a bit weird from an isometric point of view, now have visible roofs on the buildings instead of just a black sea beyond the walls. There’s a wealth of detail in every scene, in the monsters, and in character models, that really makes me appreciate the ability to dynamically switch between the old and new graphics to see the contrast. Diablo 2 moves at two distinct speeds. You’re either carving through swathes of undead with impunity, watching their bones crumple into dust, and downing health potions with liberal decadence, or you’re navigating each fork in the road with taut reluctance, nursing the small puddle of red in the bottom left corner of the screen, hoping against hope that you’re not about to provoke yet another dispiriting death. Action-RPGs are a known quantity in 2021—with games like Torchlight, Grim Dawn, and Path of Exile optimizing the genre to a mirror shine—so what I most appreciated about my return to Blizzard’s classic was the way it made me fear the dark again, with no friendly checkpoints to save me. Diablo 2 came out in 2000, and Diablo 2: Resurrected dogmatically sticks to the original design while layering new, high-res graphics over the old ones (you can swap between the new and old looks at will), and adding new technical features. You take control of a lonely warrior—chosen from seven different classes—and are condemned to wander Blizzard’s arid, Old Testament wasteland, completing quests, plundering chests, and clicking zillions of cloven-hooved demons to death. We got Starcraft, Warcraft 1-3, Frozen Throne, and World of Warcraft. These games pioneered an entire genre and, in some cases, are still best in class. There was one other little series that was released during this era, and that’s Diablo. Diablo was alright. Diablo 2 though, now THAT was a game. It took the pioneering aspects of Diablo, which in turn took its inspiration from Baldur’s Gate, which in turn absorbed the entirety of Dungeons and Dragons (tangent ends here) and made pure gold. Gold so pristine, that there was a measurable dip in the global workforce. Diablo 2 is so well known and held in such high regard, some people still call the genre in which it resides, Diablo-like.

Put it this way; only a handful of games have ever had genres named after them. It’s crazy. Diablo fever was so strong that it was at a dangerously high level of addiction right up until Diablo 3’s release, which took over a decade to land. A global phenomenon that, before Resurrected’s release, cemented Diablo 2 as one of the greatest games of all time, and the best game in its genre. Now that all of that spiel is out of the way, how is Resurrected? If all you want from your Diablo 2 remake is an almost shot-for-shot, near-perfect replica of a 21-year-old game, that boy, do I have good news for you. In a world where the word remake is loosely defined as a mostly unrelated game that feeds off nostalgia to tell an objectively worse tale (looking at you Final Fantasy), Diablo 2 Resurrected stands alone. This is Diablo 2. Heck, this is Diablo 2 with a free expansion that made Diablo 2 bigger. For the uninitiated, Diablo 2 is an isometric action-adventure with RPG elements, set in a dark fantasy universe with angels, demons and all sorts of nefarious entities. Upon its release in 2000, it was the video game equivalent of a self-aware black metal album, with a performative seriousness that’s not meant to be taken earnestly. It remains campy as hell, and it’s a joy for being so. Back To Ashes

Diablo 2: Resurrected is a remaster of the dungeon-crawling classic. There are no big updates to controls, camera angles, or map design. It is, in essence, Diablo 2, complete with all the joys and annoyances players might remember. Players choose from a pool of seven character classes, with which they smash, shoot and magically blast their way through randomized environments ranging from rural encampments to creepy tombs. For the purposes of this review, I went through them all. However, there were standouts. My martial artist Assassin would be right at home in a Yakuza game, chaining jabs that build into a devastating final blow. In contrast, my Necromancer stands back to let his army of foul beasts, ghouls, and skeletons simply wash over the land, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. Beautifully, when you switch to the classic graphics you switch to the original sound as well, though the difference is nowhere near as stark here because it didn’t need any significant updating. Aside from a bit of remastering it is identical to the original, and it’s still phenomenal. The ping when a gem hits the floor, the whirl of weapons, and the guttural demon voices (“Rakanishu!”) are iconic sound design. This is not to mention the remasters of the classic soundtrack, or the new remixes, which are beautiful work. (The voice acting, well… let’s just say it was a different time. At least Deckard Cain and Tyrael are great – oh, and Baal in the expansion. That awful laugh still creeps right up under my skin.)

Players on different platforms can play together in online multiplayer games, allowing for a larger player base and more matchmaking options.

In the “aged, but mostly gracefully” column we have the arc of Diablo 2’s story, which is good, but it’s not as good as I fondly remembered. The first two acts are really fun, and each quest is a dark, gothic fantasy vignette, while Act 3 is a great sprawling jungle crawl with lots of little dungeons sprinkled around. Act 4, however, is boring as dirt. The NPCs don’t have any flavor dialogue, let alone personality, while the quests and the areas are entirely linear. I have no idea how a story about invading Hell itself could be boring, but Diablo 2 somehow did it. Thankfully, things pick up again with the Lord of Destruction expansion’s Act 5. It’s a bit rushed, but it’s a good time. That’s probably my favorite thing about Diablo 2: Resurrected. The modern game industry frequently saddles all the fun parts of games with depressing stat grinds. We log in to be bombarded with timed storefront discounts, a cutthroat cosmetics market, and a litany of different currencies and stat tiers crowded on the home screen that makes us go cross-eyed. But this remaster is proud to be a dinosaur, with no monetary retrofitting around the edges to bring it further into the 21st century. We’re out here killing zombies and studiously comparing the blue trident on the floor with the one currently attached to our character sheet. Back to Freedom UNCENSORED

No auction house economy or crafting matrix gets in the way. Honestly, that’s downright revolutionary when compared to the constant sales pitches sucking the joy out of just about every other experience available on live servers. There are some changes, but these are so bafflingly minor in the grand scheme that they can probably just be called iddy-biddy-diably quality of life(y) changes. This includes a shared storage chest and a quick bar. There’s more, but those two are the ones that stand out as being the most significant. Considering how throw-away they are, I am sure you can grasp just how loyal this remake is to the original vision. The controls are wonderfully responsive, and each class has its own mechanical feel. Playing on PS5, I feel every jab and magic bolt on the DualSense.

The final splooge icing on the Resurrected cake is the graphics. The sticks eerily close to Diablo 2’s original themes and style. It’s so close, that when I was playing, it looked like what I thought Diablo 2 looked like, 21 years ago. That makes sense, I promise you. Animations are spot on, character designs are mostly ripped straight from the original, with a few changes for the modern visual palette here and there. Similar to the Master Chief Collection or R-Type Dimensions, you can even change the graphical style on the fly, and check out what Diablo 2 looked like, seamlessly. It’s a great feature, but man, Diablo 2 hurts the brain to look at in motion, let me tell you. If that’s all you wanted to know – if you know what Diablo 2 is, and you want it injected into your veins, then this is all you need. Go off, have fun, it’s Diablo 2. Shoo. For everyone else, it’s time to get real.
