Overall, Citizen Sleeper was a must-play for fans of psychological horror games. Its unique gameplay mechanics and disturbing atmosphere made it a standout title in the genre, and the story was a compelling and unforgettable journey through a world of nightmares and secrets. One of 2022’s most acclaimed indies, the Game Awards-nominated Citizen Sleeper is a Tabletop-inspired narrative RPG set on Erlin’s Eye, a ruined space station that is home to thousands of people trying to survive on the edges of an interstellar capitalist society. You are a sleeper, a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back. Thrust amongst the unfamiliar and colourful inhabitants of the Eye, you need to build friendships, earn your keep, and navigate the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle. Inspired by Tabletop Roleplaying games, Citizen Sleeper uses Dice, Clocks and Drives. Each cycle you use the dice you are dealt to choose what to do with your time. Make or break alliances, uncover truths and escape your hunters. Survive and ultimately thrive, one cycle at a time. The station plays host to characters from all walks of life, trying to eke out an existence among the stars. Salvagers, engineers, hackers, bartenders, street-food vendors.

Engaging Storyline.

Each has a history which brought them here. You choose which of them you wish to help, and together you will shape your future. Eventually, you will learn to use your dice to hack into the station’s cloud to access decades of digital data, uncover new areas and unlock secrets. This is your unique power, and with it you can change your future. Corporate secrets, rogue AIs and troves of lost data await those willing to dive into the depths of the station’s networks. Essen-Arp: to them you are just property, one more asset in a portfolio that stretches across the stars. You are the product of an abusive system, in a universe where humanity’s expansion is marked by exploitation and extraction. Escape the makers of your decaying body, and chart your own path in a richly imagined, deeply relevant sci-fi world which explores ideas of precarity, personhood and freedom. Citizen Sleeper uses Dice, Clocks and Drives to create a player-led experience, where you choose your path in a rich and responsive world. Each cycle you roll your dice. Assign them to vast range of actions available on the station. With every action, choose what, and who, matters to you, shaping the lives of those around you, and ultimately the future of the station.TO THE TOP

Clocks track both your actions and the actions of others across the station. From becoming a local at the Overlook Bar to protecting a friend from Yatagan enforcers, clocks allow you to track your own progress and the influence you have on the world around you. Follow drives not quests, allowing you to pick and choose the stories and activities that matter to you. As you do, you will shape your character’s five skills (Engineer, Interface, Endure, Intuit and Engage), unlocking perks and bonuses that reflect and change how you choose to live in this world. Jump Over the Age is a one-person game development studio founded by Gareth Damian Martin (they/them). Along with Guillaume Singelin (character art) and Amos Roddy (music and sound) they created Citizen Sleeper. Their first game, In Other Waters won the Jury Prix at IndieCade Europe, and was widely praised by critics for its “hypnotic art, otherworldly audio and captivating writing” (Eurogamer). Before making games Gareth was a graphic designer, games critic and academic. They hold a PhD in experimental literature. The gameplay can get boring, however it impresses me quite a lot. When I first heard about how the game’s main mechanic was focused around RNG, I didn’t like the idea. However, as I played more I released that while yes it is technically RNG,

Boss Battles.

it doesn’t feel like it because you have so much control. I won’t explain how it works because I can’t be bothered, but you won’t get bogged down by a random number, only your own poor decision making and planning. I feel that this extra mechanic made the game significatly less boring, because without it this game would have just felt like a glorified point and click visual novel. There are also a whole host of other things that will keep the game fresh throughout its run time, but I won’t go into detail because, well, I can’t be bothered. The story is interesting, the world is unique, and the characters range from loveable to hateable (which they are supposed to). The game doesn’t really end when you make a choice at an ending it just reloads, so you will just have to make the decision to stop playing if you wish to fullfill that ending. Despite having multiple endings, there is not any sort of overarching mechanic or statistic in place to give you a satisfactory final ending, it always just results in at said ending do you click “Option 1” or “Option 2”. Which is somewhat disappointing, but oh well. The graphics achieve what they aim to achieve, so that’s fine. The character artwork is nice, also I would’ve enjoyed some more variation (there is usually only 1 or 2 specific artwork for a character). As for audio, I have no complaints about the SFX except it would’ve been incredible if the game had voice acting. The music is fine, very complementary (I wouldn’t listen to it outside the game in my own time).

I feel like the game would’ve benefited from something more funky in my opinion. Something I can vibe to while playing the game. However, I understand the more atmospheric approach. While there is some replayability in the form of achievements, I feel as if the gameplay may not hold up for anything more than 2 playthroughs (unless you truly love the game). Value for money is pretty good if you do anything more than 1 playthrough. Also, the extra DLC episodes add a few hours of playtime and a nice overall ending I could enjoy. The game presents a tight set of systems that culminates in a neat balance of resource management and rpg-lite character progression. The dice, resource management and light RPG systems are likely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I very much enjoyed them personally. If you’re on the fence like I once was, I encourage you to give them a shot! Incredibly fun and juicy in the beginning, these systems do well to support the story you’re thrust into, as well as the Sleeper’s growth over their journey on The Eye. Near the late game, however, the majority of challenges are trivialised as you overcome the resource systems. This lead the endgame to feel a little less challenging than you may feel it should be given the narrative weight of what’s happening.

Challenging Gameplay: The game's mechanics require players to use their wits and strategic thinking to overcome a variety of obstacles and enemies. Maya has a range of abilities and weapons at her disposal, and players must use them wisely to survive.

Aesthetically, the game does a lot with very little. A combination of a well-detailed 3D model of the space station you call home, as well as beautifully rendered illustrations of the majority of characters make up the bulk of what you see in the game, but they do a fantastic job of adding life to the world and its people between the text. The interface, overall, is clean and easy to follow. At times I found myself wishing that some information was communicated more clearly, but this was rarely the case. Citizen Sleeper’s use of sound and music are absolutely a carrying force for the game. Spacey, synthy beats drum idly in the background as you go through each cycle, evoking a strong sense of isolation and, in strange ways, hope. Hearing the soundtrack was what convinced me to take the plunge and buy the game, and I was proven right in that call. The music makes the best moments in the game. Ambient audio, like environmental machine sounds, are sometimes present, albeit it rather scarce overall. I feel that more ambient sounds and voiced characters would have really enhanced the text-based narrative that encompases the game. Given the size of the team behind the game, they did a remarkable job nonethelessStrayed Lights
