Don’t even feel like I need to play more than a few hours to give a recommendation. Music and graphic design is still stellar, writing is still excellent. Game is basically following a bunch of character vignettes to their conclusion, but the addition of “missions” gives a greater sense of challenge, prioritization and contained narrative that I really like. I will say that (in my limited experience) I am sad that the survival aspect that drove the first game seems heavily toned down, because it is usually the urgency and scarcity that drives this Sunless Sea-style type of narrative. Traded the need to get expensive medication to live from the first game to now having no challenge to survive, but instead putting you in heist situations with tight clocks to inspire drama. This is so much worse!! I mean, story is great, I recommend, etc., but the heists are not an improvement. If you don’t get good dice luck, there’s no chance to clear them on the first time through, because you’ll inevitably push your luck in a way that seems fine but turns out to be a little too risky, or you’ll invest resources finishing a clock that turns out to unlock a pile of scrap that you have to finish another clock to get. In the first game, the fact that there was a ticking clock and your survival was at risk was fine, because over the longer time span dice rolls aren’t as impactful and also because the acquisition of knowledge in the same loop over and over helped you learn what was profitable and kept you alive while you extended your reach. But these heists are exactly the opposite: much shorter and completely new each time. It ratchets up the pressure and regret in a way I do not like–when I failed quests in the first game it’s because I chose not to commit resources to them over the course of weeks, not because I accidentally explored the wrong part of a ship in the 5-7 turns that I could.
