This is nigh-on essential if you want to survive the game’s punishing boss battles, or even some of its tougher foot soldiers. Those are the basics of combat, but there are also various special attacks you can initiate once you’ve collected the appropriate power-up. With that done, a quick movement combination followed by X will initiate a powerful move that eats into your limited energy bar. There’s an undeniable visceral thrill to Bloody Zombies. The game’s moody post-apocalyptic London setting feels fresh despite its familiar zombie protagonists, and both justify the lashings of cartoon violence and free-flowing red stuff. It’s also nice to see a number of secret areas to uncover. Don’t get us wrong, there aren’t lots of secrets to found in every area, but finding a hidden stash of items and bonuses behind a breakable barrier provides a welcome diversion from the intense slog of combat. Which unfortunately speaks to the general tone of the game. It feels an awful lot like hard work at times, with repeating waves of enemies that take a considerable beating before going down. The action in Bloody Zombies feels somewhat sluggish, while unpredictable contact points often leave you flailing away at thin air because your character and the enemy are on slightly different 2D planes.

There’s also no getting away from the fact that Bloody Zombies is a button masher in the classic sense of the term. Its cel-shaded graphics might make it look a lot sharper and more sophisticated than the arcade beat-’em-ups of old, but it’s barely any smarter, and pummelling zombie heads soon becomes repetitive. That’s not helped by the fact that each of the four playable characters controls and moves identically. The animation and vocal lines might be different between lithe punk Rei, sharply dressed hipster Teller, hulking biker Mick and extreme sports type Eddie, but they essentially have the exact same roster of moves. At first glance, it is side-scrolling brawler reminiscent of classics such as Double Dragon or Street Fighter. Bloody Zombies to be exact, and by the truckload. You can play as one of four cockney blokes as they battle their way through the streets of London. Wait, it takes place in London? These are foul-mouthed Brits? I just got the double meaning of “bloody” zombies. Oh, that’s clever (and I’m slow). Anyway, there are all sorts of different types of zombies here, and they each utilize different characteristics and different combat techniques. Here is the story in a nutshell: there are zombies in London. The city was overrun, so they erected walls to blockade and isolate the city. Everyone inside is dead, or undead. Except those four aforementioned badasses that are about to open can after can of whoopass. Whichever of the four colorful characters you choose, Teller, Mick, Rei or Eddie; you’ll have more options than the typical punch, punch, kick combinations as you learn to combine moves for nearly endless charitable combos. You’ll collect color-coded special skills that unlock powerful special moves. These special moves can be difficult to pull off, but they are bloody cool when you do. Also, throughout your journey you’ll stumble across the occasional weapon, like swords or hammers. These pack a powerful punch for a short while, before they break and fall away.

Lone Survivors.

All of this is to say, that Bloody Zombies is easy to pick up and play, but there is a lot to master and it won’t be easy. You can unleash your new skills as you clear the various forms of rotting dead from each section of the street. Eventually, you’ll run into one of the several bosses per level. These giant, undead meatsacks will test your dodging skills, your pattern memorizing, and your button-mashing-thumb-speed. The levels and the zombies are varied, but my favorite part of the game is the VR portion. You can play single player in VR, or locally with a friend, although due to system limitations, obviously only one of you can be in VR at a time. However, in online coop, there is no limit to how many of the four players can play utilizing the PSVR headset. Of course it is not necessary to play in VR, but being able to lean in and look around obstacles does offer a distinct tactical advantage. In VR, the game is still a 2 dimensional side-scrolling brawler. But now you can look down the entire street to see what’s to come. You can look up and see hidden areas that were impossible to see with the locked point of view offered by the standard 2D version, and you’ll see the city in much greater detail. It’s awesome. I started the game in 2D and played the first level, and I enjoyed it. I then busted out my trusted VR headset and couldn’t believe the difference it made. Being able to see a much larger section of the city adds a dimension to the game that was very much welcome, even if it’s only mental. Side note that doesn’t matter: Each character being controlled by a player in VR will find their little guy (or gal) wearing a tiny digital headset. It doesn’t affect gameplay in any way, as it’s purely cosmetic. I just thought it was a nice touch. The only knock I have on the VR portion of the game is that the view did seem a little jumpy. Sometimes the view wobbled left and right or even front to back. It wasn’t constant and it didn’t happen all of the time but it did happen. Also, when the wife and I were swapping between players so she could try the VR, the game locked up and shut the whole system off. Our save file was subsequently corrupted. I’m not sure if it was the games fault, and it hasn’t happened again, but I felt I should mention it. Street fighting games marked an entire generation that enjoyed a series of games that will go down in the annals of industry history, with Final Fight and Streets of Rage being two of the most representative examples, and other pearls that more than one wishes SEGA or CAPCOM would pick up today.

It must be recognized that the genre did not know how to evolve, it aged poorly and did not know how to find a place in the three-dimensional era. This consigned them to oblivion, but companies must be reminded that 2D has a lot to say and still has a regiment of fans who would support a return of these titles without having to jump through the hoops of 3D. To sample a button: Bloody Zombies slams its fist down on the table to not only remind us that the beat em up genre isn’t dead, but that the zombie craze is still alive and well. The game is daring but respectful at the same time with the classics, and it shows that a 2D game can also enjoy a deep and elaborate gameplay, not so much as its plot, which, as usually happens in this type of game, is a mere excuse to go toe-to-toe against everything that moves in a post-apocalyptic England as a background setting. Just a first glance is enough to realize that Bloody Zombies aspires to rub shoulders with the greats of the genre. As soon as the game begins, we already see that the sprites are of a considerable size, the height of which comes with the confrontations with the final bosses, whose dimensions already predict that defeating them will not be a breeze. Its cel shading aesthetic provides a plus of charisma in what ends up forming an excellent artistic section, which exudes charisma and a first-class sense of humor.

The animations are not lagging behind and each and every one of the characters moves and responds correctly, with the enemies being the ones that enjoy the rougher movements, which is logical if we take into account that they are undead. About performance we have nothing to object to in single player mode. However, it is in online multiplayer where the game limps with a response lag of up to a little over a second between pressing the controller and reproducing the character’s movement on the screen. In addition, the online mode is quite deserted and it is difficult to find available players in certain time slots. In the United States it seems that there are more followers of the genre who own the game, and it is after four or five in the afternoon when there is more influx. Special mention for the sound section, with some musical pieces that seem to have been composed by the best of Yuzo Koshiro’s pupils, and are accompanied by a range of effects to match.
