Citadel but more. Really improves on everything from the first game (which is a gem in it’s own right). Weapon handling now has a kind of Receiver-lite feel too it, with reloads and weapon handling being even more involved than the first game. Gunfights themselves straddle a nice line between feeling tactical and feeling like something from Doom or (what still feels like it’s main inspiration) Marathon, especially with the number of enemies you’ll be up against.

The Maps are a lot more open than I remember the maps in Citadel being, with a bunch more movement options and vehicles thrown in to help you get around. The one side effect of this however is it’s quite easy at times to double-jump-dash yourself into the void. Fortunately the game doesn’t really punish you if you do. Now the two points of contention for a lot of people. Yes the game is incredibly gory, I’d say this helps sell how visceral the combat is and the bleakness of the setting. The Martyr wears a series of skimpy outfits and each level contains a piece of fan-service artwork. If either of these things are enough to put you off playing, you probably already know the game isn’t for you anyway. Overall the game is an incredible throwback retro shooter that does enough game-play wise that feels unique to stand out on it’s own. I look forward to whatever Doekuramori does in the future.
