ENDER LILIES Quietus Of The Knight Free Download GAMESPACK.NET Just how many Metroidvanias is too many? It really feels at this point like the Switch is being completely overloaded with titles from the genre, but if we continue to receive quality experiences like Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, then that’s a-okay with us! Despite its odd title (which is also a blatant nod to the stone-cold classic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and its spiritual successor Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night), Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a strong take on the genre with a heavy focus on mood and tone above all else. It’s a sombre tale with visuals and audio to match, but make no mistake, it’s also chock full of challenging combat and vicious boss characters. You take on the role of Lily, a Priestess who awakens in ‘Land’s End’, a dark, desolate kingdom that’s fallen under a curse known as Blight. The kingdom’s inhabitants – from brave knights to humble shopkeepers – have been transformed into grotesque creatures, and it’s up to Lily to purify and save their spirits. On her own, Lily is completely devoid of any offensive abilities. She can run, dodge and jump just fine, but will cower in fear at the sight of the deadly ‘Blighted’; she is a child, after all.TOP/BEST ADULT VIDEO GAMES IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

To rectify this she is joined by the Umbral Knight, the first of many spirits that join forces with Lily throughout her quest. Though invisible for the majority of the time, the Umbral Knight steps up to unleash a torrent of sword attacks whenever Lily commands it; this forms the basis of the game’s combat. As you defeat the boss characters littered throughout the land, Lily is then able to purify and take on the enemy’s spirit, thus utilising their core ability to her advantage. This could be a giant hammer attack, a crow that fires long-range projectiles towards enemies, or simply the ability to swim underwater. You can wield up to six different spirits at once, split up into two groups of three that you can swap between at the press of a button. In essence, it’s similar to how Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night dealt with its own combat but, dare we say, Ender Lilies has actually surpassed this with a more elegant, customisable approach. As you progress through the game you can also obtain certain items organically as you wander the twisting, labyrinthine environments. These items can be used to upgrade your spirits, boosting their effectiveness permanently. Additionally, relics can be obtained which grant specific perks such as improved attack power or an additional healing slot.

Explore the vast kingdom of Land’s End and discover all its secrets.

These can be tricky to find but getting around the world is much easier as you progress, with an added fast travel feature to help you out. Experimenting with different spirit sets is certainly encouraged, as Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is absolutely no pushover when it comes to difficulty. There’s definitely a certain Souls-like approach to the combat; while one enemy rarely poses much of a threat, a group of them together can easily overwhelm Lily if you’re not smart with your spirit abilities. Running in and button mashing rarely (if ever) works out; you’ll need to take a more cautious approach, wait for the enemies to run through their attack cycles, and swoop in to counter. This is even more relevant when you come to the boss battles. Boss characters mainly follow a clear pattern of attacks, but as you chip away at their health they’ll gain additional strength as the battle progresses, boosting their attack power and shaking up their move sets. Dodging is absolutely essential to surviving these encounters, and thankfully the game places a save point near each boss, so you’re free to switch up your spirit abilities if your current load-out isn’t paying off.Survive The Nights

Not only does the combat take some cues from Dark Souls, but the way the story is drip-fed via notes and environmental storytelling is very similar to the From Software classic. To be clear though, this isn’t a knock on the game at all; the focus on tone as you explore is absolutely exemplary, and it makes you want to go back and explore every possible nook and cranny, if not for useful items, then certainly for the extra scraps of information. To bolster this, the game features a stellar soundtrack with a wide range of instrumental tracks, from sombre piano melodies to epic orchestral pieces. We’re not ashamed to admit that we had a track called ‘Harmonious’ stuck in our heads long after putting the game down; it’s certainly the kind of soundtrack that we’d be quite happy to stick on in the background during work hours. The same care has also gone into the game’s visuals. While strictly limited to two dimensions, this only serves to benefit the fantastic art design on display. Everything from the intimidating enemy design right down to the ambient glow of the environmental fauna has been handled with incredible attention to detail. When you consider how poor a title like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night looked at launch (on the Switch, at least), Ender Lilies is frankly head and shoulders above it. Having said that, there are minor frame rate dips at numerous points in the game.

Immerse yourself in an atmospheric soundtrack from musical group Mili.

It’s never severe enough to disrupt combat sessions or hinder your progress, but when the majority of the game runs at a smooth 60fps the dips stick out like a sore thumb. Nevertheless, this feels like a bit of a nitpick in the grand scheme of things; by and large, the game is a visual and auditory treat, with excellent gameplay binding the experience together. Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights ticks all the boxes of a respectable Metroidvania. It delivers a colossal labyrinth that’s fun to explore, and you find cool new abilities to open inaccessible areas all while leveling up and enhancing your character with powers and equipment. I’m a sucker for the genre, so that bare minimum is usually enough to get me on board no matter how many games enter the space. But as I traversed Ender Lilies’ beautifully realized gothic kingdom, I found its challenging yet entertaining combat and myriad secrets helped set it a cut above several of its contemporaries. Ender Lilies likely won’t rope in anyone burned out on this style of game, but those looking to scratch that familiar itch will find plenty to love here. Lily is a young priestess who awakens to find her home of Land’s End in absolute ruin. A shower called the “Rain of Death” has not only devastated the land, but it has also transformed its citizens into undead abominations called the Blighted.Dreamscaper

Lily alone possesses the power to cleanse the afflicted of this disease, but she isn’t a trained fighter. Enter the Umbral Knight, an immortal protector who serves as Lily’s sword and guide. Whenever Lilly attacks, she summons the Knight, who eviscerates foes with simple yet satisfying hack n’ slash moves that can be upgraded to hit harder and perform longer combos. These attacks look slick, and watching the Knight handle the dirty work while Lily sheepishly cowers in the background is an endearing bonus. Lily’s roster of guardian spirits grows as she seeks out other cursed souls and engages them in exciting, white-knuckle boss battles. After defeating these monsters, Lily gains vital abilities used to access new areas of the map. These powers are nothing new if you’ve played enough of these types of games. Expect a double-jump, speed dash, and wall jump, for example. But I was always excited to gain more mobility and unlock access to a new area, thanks in part to the plethora of fun optional minibosses hiding within each zone. Smaller foes – from disease-ridden mages to undead paladins – may be weaker than the critical path bosses, but defeating these enemies often rewards Lily with powerful new attacks that can turn the tide in your favor. I love conjuring a powerful whirlwind to blow back enemies or summoning a fireball-shooting bird for a handy assist.

Uncover the mysteries of the remaining ruins and the Rain of Death in a violent world.

These powers are invaluable because Ender Lilies is no joke in the difficulty department. Though the challenge is more entertaining than oppressive, the game demands an above-average level of finesse as even the most basic enemies can quickly annihilate lackadaisical players, and you’ll soon learn that you’re better off when you have more powers at your disposal. Some abilities are simply better tailored for certain enemies. For example, I found suffocating sluggish foes with a toxic cloud before they could reach me a great tactic. Although you can beat any foe using any of your attacks, Ender Lilies rewards players who experiment with loadouts, and I enjoyed testing different strategies and reaping the results. Combining attacks works well too. It feels slick summoning a brute to launch foes skyward with his powerful downward strike, then impaling them in midair with a volley of arrows courtesy of a fallen archer. You can only equip a limited number of abilities and equipment, however, and it’s mildly annoying that you can only edit your loadout in save rooms. The excitement of gaining a new power diminishes when you have to drop everything to trek back to the nearest checkpoint. Despite this, acquiring as many tools in my belt as possible became a powerful motivator to search room after terror-filled room.

The map is a gigantic network of rooms that had me gleefully rubbing my hands in anticipation for each new expedition. Ender Lilies is divided into gorgeous, visually distinct biomes, from an underground laboratory run by mages to a fairytale-like forest. I had fun exploring most of these areas, save for one poison-filled swamp that was more stress-inducing than entertaining. A fantastic musical piece for each area further sets them apart; I looked forward to revisiting several zones just to hear my favorite songs again. A spirit known as the Umbral Knight both haunts and protects her. When you press “attack”, it’s his blade that tears through foes, as Lily herself clutches her hands together and winces with the impact. She’s adorable, and despite not being a fighter, her determination is somehow evident as she drags herself up ledges, and picks herself off the ground, over and over. The Gothic architecture may be shadow-haunted and foreboding, but Lily’s quest is one of hope. If she fails, the Blight will claim every last soul in the world. To succeed, she must defeat zombie knights, undead crossbowmen, mutated beasts, hounds from hell, and a cadre of bosses who were once great heroes. Bosses in Ender Lilies take the form of an assortment of twisted and corrupted warriors. Defeating them allows Lily to cleanse their souls, and recruit them into her ghostly entourage.

You can have any six with you at any given time, allowing for a variety of attacks and abilities. Simply cleansing them will often add their skills to Lily’s repertoire. For example, defeating a hulking, hammer-wielding berserker gives Lily the ability to not only deal massive damage, but to smash through certain floors. As a Metroidvania, there’s a large amount of backtracking and exploration. Rest spots such as benches and beds allow Lily to swap out her spirits and equip trinkets for buffs and power-ups. You can also fast travel between areas using a spectral horse and carriage. You’ll explore abandoned villages, ruined castles, dark forests, strewn with the bodies of Lily’s former sisters. It’s grim at every turn, and yet there’s an element of beauty, too. The aesthetic is gorgeous, Lily’s stark white dress a constant beacon of light in the dark. And the character and enemy designs evoke Dark Souls or games of its ilk. Backdrops are macabre, skulls and bodies litter the environs, magic effects spark against the ruddy shadows. Lily and her spirits have a diverse array of spells and abilities, and each animation is brimming with personality. Lore is scattered everywhere throughout Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, too. From diary entries and dusty journals to the occasional grim mumblings of the Umbral Knight himself, flavour text fleshes out the world. It’s not as deep or subtext-filled as a From Software game, but it paints of a believable picture of a once-proud fantasy kingdom gone to ruin.GRIME
