At the time these would have been divided up between the major powers of England, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, and as the player you will play a character from one of these nations. To do that, you usually start with a single ship that can be used to perform trade between the various ports spread across the map, carrying needed goods to and fro as you expand your armada and create new fleets. As with all good management games, you are not required to micromanage these trade routes yourself. Instead, you can fully automate them and let the AI handle the minutiae of commodities as you focus on the big picture, which is my favourite way of doing anything. To set up a trade route, you need to choose which commodities are bought and sold where, how many stops to take on the way, and even the route your convoy should take. Port Royale 4 is surprisingly detailed with wind direction and currents actually affecting travel times just like in real life. To prevent your convoy from taking three weeks to cross a no-go zone that may put you out of pocket, you can instead manually set a longer route downwind that will actually shorten the travel time. Once ships get to their destination they can sell their cargo, but you must then keep an eye on the supply and demand indicators.

Too much supply and the demand lowers and prices plummet, while high demand means better prices and better profit. Mo’ profits mean mo’ money, and you get to expand your fleet by buying used ships or ordering the construction of new ones. Weirdly, sailors and captains — which could have been a whole dimension in itself — are largely absent; sailors are only hired and used for boarding actions, and captains are only necessary to command ships with military power. This being the grand age of piracy, military power is obviously important — while your and other ships strive to make an honest living, ne’er do wells go around the Caribbean drinking rum, attacking merchants, and singing “Yo-Ho A Pirate’s Life for Me!”. This is fun when you’re watching Pirates of the Caribbean (the early ones, not that later rubbish), but really annoying when you’re being attacked the one time you’re carrying the most valuable cargo you’ve ever handled. you get a slow and weird turn-based minigame where ships zip and rotate on hexes and are able to push enemies around and even set whole tiles on fire. It’s a weird departure from the historical authenticity that fuels Port Royale’s main experience, and literally the only good thing about combat is that you can skip it. As your economic power increases, so does your fame, and you start to gain some respect among the colonies and their governments. Help the viceroy enough with errands and missions, and you can get a permit to manually take control of a colony’s development, letting you shape it to your liking. Churches, taverns, housing districts, farms, and industry — dozens and dozens of options allow you to grow the colony in a mini city-builder fashion, and warehouses allow you to store commodities you produce and set the price of what you sell. The end result is full control over the supply chain from origin to market, displaying a level of money-making skills and effective management that would make Jack Welch blush. Despite all that management goodness, what most impressed me in Port Royale 4 is the graphics. The game isn’t just pretty — it’s gorgeous.

The map can be fully zoomed in from a bird’s eye view all the way to the individual ships in a harbour, and everything from the sea and sky to the islands themselves looks stunning. Mountains and forests spread across the archipelagos, underwater reefs shimmer below the waves, and clouds — both calm, white fluffy ones and towering cumulus nimbus bringing in a storm — fly overhead, lending the game fantastic views if you bother to zoom in and rotate the fully 3D camera around.Parents need to know that Port Royale 4 is a historical simulation of naval trade in the Caribbean during the age of European colonization and pirates. Players work to create trade routes between towns to ensure they have everything they need to prosper and be happy while taking care to defend themselves from opportunistic enemies on the high seas. Combat’s only a small part of the game — players see nothing worse than cannons fired and ships sunk — with the focus set squarely on developing resources, producing goods, and running a profitable trading enterprise. The opening CGI video gives the impression that you’ll be getting involved with an awful lot of piracy, but while that is part of the game, it’s by far one of the smaller aspects of a game that is trading and town managing more than anything else.You’ll want to start by playing through the tutorials, which do a good job of explaining not only how to control the game, but also how to actually play the game. You’ll need to learn how to manage ships and convoys, how to lay out trade routes, the ins-and-outs of naval combat, and more in just a couple of hours. These tutorials are indispensable as the game’s UI is a little… unique. While strategy and management games on console have come a long way over the last decade, Port Royale 4 is not quite as intuitive as the best examples.

It’s manageable with a little guidance and practice, even if you occasionally open the wrong menu by accident and have to put up with using analog sticks for most menus. The first few hours of a game at least are going to be spent trading between towns belonging to your chosen nation. Thankfully it’s pretty easy to tell which goods you should be buying, selling, and ignoring thanks to a bar that fills up based on demand in that town. If it’s full, the town has a large surplus of the resource and is selling it cheap, but if a bar is empty, the town needs that resource and is buying it for a higher price. If you then buy too much of it, the price per unit will increase as their stores dwindle, cutting into your profit. You’ll probably begin by managing this manually, personally ordering your ship between towns and buying and selling things yourself, but you’ll soon get an extra ship or two and be able to set up a trade route. Once you’ve made a trade route, by way of a lengthy process of picking all the towns on the route and setting out instructions for buying and selling in each one separately, ships you assign to it will run it automatically.

This allows you to focus elsewhere whilst your ships rake in doubloons, or whatever. You’ll also need to plan each trade route’s, well, route. There are a few things to consider when you’re at sea: sailing against the wind makes your ship slower, while sailing through storm-prone areas can damage your ships, not to mention avoiding any areas that happen to be populated by pirates or hostile nations. The route planning aspect can be used to cut out unnecessary time wastage on your trade routes and really maximise profit. Most of the time you can just use waypoints to move it away from the red areas on the map where storms are likely and you’ll be fine, but the option to really optimise them is there if you want it. The same goes for your purchase instructions, where you can set specifics about how much to purchase, or you can just select which items you want to buy and sell in each town and leave the game to decide the amounts automatically based on supply and demand. This is very welcome as choosing specific amounts for everything would likely double what is already quite a lengthy process in a game full of menus.

As money starts rolling in, you can start to expand your fleet by purchasing or building newer, bigger ships and sending them to discover other nations’ towns. At that point you’ll be able to plan more expensive, but even more profitable trade routes to these more distant areas. Managing towns is another aspect to consider. Obviously you can fully manage your own hometown as the governor, but you can also manage your nation’s other settlements once you’ve got approval to set up a business and then built them up to be large enough. From there you can start constructing the relevant buildings in towns to start producing resources – after all, you then don’t have to buy it, so there’s more profit! – and eventually become governor of those settlements as well. Managing each town is more than just catering to your business needs.
