Spent several hours with the demo for Odinfall a while ago, and the release version still comes across as a solid, fancied up Nuclear Throne, with a cute weapon upgrade system, where you add attachments to weapons that change their core stats (eg, adding “spread” to your axe will attack in three directions, but cost ammo or shot delay), and fairly typical metaprogression for characters as they level up (take note, if Nuclear Throne not having metaprogression was a feature). The action has a good speed and feel, as one should expect from something that doesn’t paint too far outside the established lines, but Odinfall at least manages to do so with conviction. Co-op was a key feature, but it was removed before opening early access. Hopefully that was just temporary, and we’ll see a timeline on that coming back soon, but removing all mentions of it from the store page and early access plans is pretty concerning. If you’re looking for co-op, make sure the devs are moving on it first. I do wish these games would just have a separate melee weapon specific slot instead of always coming back to the annoying two weapon slots design, where if you want to play with guns plural, you can run out of ammo. Especially here, where you have upgrades stacked on guns and don’t want to just pick up whatever the next thing at your feet is when ammo is low. Still, hardly an issue unique to this game. Also, the “tutorial” is kind of terrible. You’d honestly be better off just thrown into a run, since there aren’t many controls in the first place (shoot, swap, dash, and special). Anyway, it’s pretty fun, once you’re through to shooting things.
