After playing thorough this game, I can kind of understand the mixed reception as I also have mixed feelings. I want to like this game more, but I just can’t. I cannot deny that the combat is a lot of fun and quite honestly the highlight of this game for me, but it is everything else that is not fun. Especially the story and the characters themselves which made me want to stop playing multiple times about halfway through but I managed to persevere to the end mainly because of the combat. The story tries it’s best to grip you, but ultimately falls flat when you take into account the whole reason any of these characters are on this adventure to begin with.

Then there are the characters themselves. That is another whole can of worms that I did not like. Most of them are either way to generic, boring, or just too weird for my liking. You have Val, your stereotypical cookie cutter hero. You know the one. Always altruistic, wanting to help anyone and everyone in need, puts the world before himself at all costs. Same tired protagonist trope that has been done to death with zero depth or complexities to make him stand out at all. Vex Clock

Careena is the brat of the group with a strange southern drawl (even though her parents do not talk like that) because every anime RPG game has to have a childish character in the group I guess. Usually, I have a soft spot for characters like that because they can add to a game in good ways, but not really here. Whenever she talks it is groan inducing because she hardly ever has anything good to say.

Morley honestly weirds me out the most out of everyone. He’s a very androgynous beast boy with a very deep voice. It is so jarring and clashes with his overall character that it just does not work in my opinion. I know he is a beast man, but his look does not work with that voice weather he is human or not. Palamena is the prim and proper queen and the one who I’m sure most people like. Like Val though she suffers from a lot of the same problems of being almost too generic of the type of character she is. However out of everyone she has the best design at least. Julei is the only one I did not mind that much as he did make me chuckle a few times.

The story and cut-scenes tend to drag on for way too long and also many times throughout the game, there will be a string of cut-scenes before you ever get back to the actual combat. It will have you run to a spot and watch a cut-scene, only to have run to another spot sometimes only a few steps away from where you are and watch another cut-scene. A lot of these cut-scenes don’t really add much to the story and there are many moments like this. You can cut a lot of unnecessary dialogue and needless detours with no fighting out of this game and you would not be missing anything.

I said earlier that the combat was the highlight of the game, but the problem is there is not really enough of it and way too many cut-scenes that add next to nothing to the story. Especially in the later half of the game. Since the story is more of a snooze fest than anything, it really doesn’t help the game at all. I cannot in all good conscious recommend this game to anyone who wants a good story, however if you are able to somehow look past an RPG with an uninteresting story and uninteresting characters, then at least the combat is fun.
