As someone who loves a good match 3 that’s not just a puzzle game, this game is fantastic. It’s actually pretty challenging with modes for speed and difficulty, and the addition of the spells is a lot of fun. On the aspect of the story, art, and music, I’m OBSESSED. The story and art are pretty cute, short story to run through, but 1) I want these people to be my friends and 2) I can’t stop thinking about the music. It’s stuck in my head. It’s over for me. As far as the gameplay is concerned, everything there is to love about Panel de Pon / Tetris Attack / Puzzle League is here. The problem, is if you are any good at this style of gameplay, there’s nothing new here. All of your garbage (regardless if it’s from a combo or chain) turns into panels when the bottom row is cleared. Therefore, the game is even easier. The other thing, is that there are high-level mechanics in PdP/TA/PL that are simply not possible here. Frame-perfect switching to keep a chain going? Forget about it. The story mode is nice, it’s a puzzle game. I’m not expecting anything groundbreaking, it does what it needs to. However, once you’ve done that and Versus. That’s it. That’s the game. Puzzle mode? Line clear? Nowhere to be found. Flipon is $4 and has a puzzle mode. Regardless of price point, missing core mainstays of the genre like this is inexcusable. It kills me to say this but, grab this while it’s on sale. There’s a fun couple of hours to be had here for sure if you’re new to action puzzle games. However, there’s not enough content here for experts and the mechanical changes to core gameplay fundementals take what should be an exciting back and forth and turn it into a speedrun of the boring kind.
