It sacrifices some realism for the sake of quality of life, sure, and it lacks any kind of concrete goals, but at the end of the day, I found Hunting Simulator 2 a fun and oddly relaxing way to spend some time.I’ll just get this one out of the way immediately: you can pet the dog. In fact, it helps build your bond with the canine companions that venture out into the wilderness with you. You start off with a beagle, adept at sniffing out tracks and putting you on the path to a trophy, but you can add more dogs to your kennel as you progress. There’s more than just dogs to add to your hunting lodge: you can purchase gear, new guns, and even bows to spice things up a bit. The selection of hunting guns is huge, and Hunting Simulator 2 has officially-licensed firearms from companies like Winchester, as well as officially-licensed outdoor gear from outfitters like Browning. The licensed apparel and firearms make for a more realistic setting, with names instantly recognizable to anyone who hunts as a hobby. On top of guns and apparel, there are binoculars and range finders, as well as consumables like scent lures, scent-covers, and wind-direction indication sprays. They’re easy to use: pushing a button brings up your item wheel and it’s a simple matter of hitting the action button to use them. They’re all really useful, particularly the wind indicators. After you’re fully outfitted with your guns and gear (and dog, of course), you select from one of six different locations, grouped into three geographical areas. There are two Colorado locations, two in Texas, and two European hunting grounds. Each location has its own different geography and animals, although there is some crossover between them, as is the case in real life (for example, real whitetail deer are damn near everywhere in the US now). While the title may suggest violence and shooting, Hunting Simulator 2 is a surprisingly meditative game. Sure, on the most basic level, it’s a shooter – but you’ll pull the trigger so rarely that it barely qualifies, despite the large number of weapons and gear at your disposal. Ultimately, it serves a better role as an educational walking simulator. The game dedicates its time to making sure you hunt properly, requiring all the paperwork and faff that goes with prepping for a hunt. You have to keep track of how many of a given animal you’ve hunted, use the correct calibre, take a specific number of shots, and more. This dedication to proper procedure, while maybe a nuisance on the surface, is, after all, the whole point.

A wide variety of animals.

All of this makes up about half the game, while the other half is actually tracking down your prey. There are a number of approaches, but far and away the best is to bring a companion tracking dog with you, and, yes, you can pet them. Letting your dog do the tracking leaves you free to take in the beauty of the environments. All six of the levels offer wildly different biomes, and are all relaxing to wander through. While your dog – whom we affectionately dubbed Joh Yowza – tracks down your next victim, it’s remarkably freeing to gently lope through a forest with naught but the sounds of nature as your company. The lands you can roam are generally pretty crowded with quarry, so you never have to wander too far to find a new target. Just make sure you don’t make too much noise. It is very much a “what you make of it” experience, though, as outside of a tutorial, there’s no narrative structure. There is an upcoming DLC which adds a “story mode”. The maps are huge, and have points of interest to discover littered throughout. Really the only obstacle for enjoyment is your own patience and just how much time you’re willing to spend doing all the less-than-thrilling activities. We reviewed Hunting Simulator 2 on PS4 a little while back and came away generally unimpressed. As a result, it was with no small level of trepidation that this reviewer revisited it on PS5. Does it warrant a re-release on the console of choice of the discerning scalper? Well, yes and no. Upon loading HS2 on PS5 we were immediately struck by the obvious loading speed increase thanks to the much-vaunted SSD Speedway (so called by my kid due to Astro’s Playroom). Also, everything is in glorious 4K now. The wind has a discernible effect on grass with it visibly blowing the blades around. We went back to the PS4 version to compare and it’s remarkable how static it was when we reviewed it previously. We hoped that haptics would have been front and centre, just as they were for the wonderful WRC9 PS5 port. Sadly, the only thing it shares is a publisher in Nacon, rather than the developer in Kylotonn.

Realism at the heart of the game experience.

Neopica haven’t done anything with the DualSense other than basic rumble. Hearing an animal cry emanate from the controller for example. Nope, nothing. Ultimately this is the same game as released back in June last year, so the same failings remain. The fact you get penalised when you can’t retrieve your quarry is still a problem. We shot a duck and it floated just a few feet away from us. Our dog swam around it having a whale of a time. Then another we shot and despite our dog having sniffed it out, the cadaver remained sight unseen. Thankfully these both happened on the same jaunt, after we’d fully kitted out ourselves with two weapons, accessories and all the licences that we could manage in the first location. We still came up short with missing licences. Why not concede to players that you can buy a licence to shoot a specific animal in the field. Heck, this is still a videogame after all. Realism would dictate you don’t have a mobile phone signal in the wilds, but at least grant us some comforts. That’s not to mention the glitchy trophy conditions that have been added to the equation here. After a couple of early trophies, we fulfilled several conditions but no unlocks happened.

Killed a fox. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Tracked a hundred animal tracks with our dog. Nothing. We’re on 182 tracked in fact. Still nothing. Then a whole load unlocked in a flurry after killing one poor unfortunate longhorned sheep. I was pleasantly surprised by just how much of a simulation this title really was. I will say that it is easier if you know a fair bit about the sport though. While there are many tutorials as well as an entire wiki section in the game, there are some things that it doesn’t teach you. Some things aren’t explained and it does make this feel like an experience tailored to those with more knowledge of the sport. The game’s hub is located at your hunting lodge where you can mount trophies, check out the wikis, view your gun collection, purchase hunting supplies, check your wardrobe, head to the shooting range, or go out on a hunt. It’s great that there’s a fair bit to do besides just going out to hunt and It was nice to come back to the lodge every now and again to test out guns or to purchase new items. Purchasable items include weapons, clothing, lure sprays, scent masking sprays, calls, and so on.

There’s a great variety and it further drives home the feeling of it being a strong simulation. The shooting range is a great way to practice your shot with your guns by offering a bunch of different ways to do so. There are clay pigeons to shoot and targets set up at different distances so that any weapon can be correctly tested. Honestly, hanging out there is just as fun as going on a hunt as it’s another part of the sport that brings it full circle. While I haven’t been on a hunt in real life, I can say that going to the range can be a fun experience. This being included personally made me connect with the game even more. The main focus of Hunting Sim 2 is obviously its hunts. Now, being that it’s realistic, there is a lot of downtime where you’ll either be following a trail or waiting in a stand or blinder for the right shot. You’ll also need to take your time, and equip yourself with the right equipment before you head out. It’s a pretty serene experience as the different environments are really well done in how they’re put together. Each one feels like it properly displays what you should expect when hunting there.
