In my first attempt as a witch, I inadvertently cast a spell and became a ladder. The Hunt The quick play method was my preferred choice, and due to the in and out gameplay, you can’t choose your team. Invariably you’ll be cast as a hunter so become accustomed to that style of play with fellow thugs following you about. As the hunter, you have to find the witch – pretty tricky if they’re cast as an inanimate object. So, potato in hand, you throw these at every item in sight hoping to draw the witch out. If you’re lucky and find one, they’ll flash pink, and you’ll get the win. Another ace up their sleeve is heat-seeking chickens. The AI on these are on par with their real-life counterparts, as more often than not, they’ll lead you on a wild goose chase(?) but occasionally, they’ll be able to find the witch if in close vicinity. In Witch It, you play as a witch or a hunter. The gameplay concept is so simple, a tiny child could understand it. That is because it is hide and seek. A simple objective with many pathways of getting there is a solid foundation for a video game, especially one you plan to play over and over again. So we’re starting from a good place. More than anything else, Witch It reminds me of a strange little game I spent a ton of time within the early 2000s, a Half Life mod called Vampire Slayer. Basically matchesthey are divided into two phases: the first, shorter, in which the witches go in search of a hiding place using their powers; the second, longer, in which the hunters go into action and have to track down the kind ladies. Hunters win if they manage to eliminate all witches, while witches win if only one of them manages to stay alive for the duration of the match (usually matches last a few minutes). “Witch It” offers different game modes such as Hide & Seek, Mobification, and Hunt a Hag. Each mode has unique gameplay mechanics and objectives.

You’ll start each match either as a witch or a hunter. As a witch, you’ll have a set time before each match to find a suitable hiding space. Each of the levels are cluttered with props you can turn into. But you won’t be able to stay stationary for too long: hunters will close in on you. You can hope for the best, or try to sneak away while they have their back turned. Of course, an object that is moving on its own is a dead giveaway for a hiding witch. Witches don’t just hide, though. They can fly, drop decoys of themselves, throw toxic mushrooms to stun hunters and more. The more you play, the more skills unlock. If you are found and defeated, your game isn’t over—instead, you turn into a hunter to finish hunting down the remaining witches. Playing as a hunter is not as fun as hiding as a witch, but it’s low pressure. They don’t have magic, but instead physical prowess. Hurl pumpkins as your default attack—and you’ll be doing it a lot, as you attack every item in search of pesky witches. You can also throw chickens that will alert you to nearby witches.

The game features support for the Steam Workshop, allowing players to create and share their own maps and mods.

The more you play, the more tools you’ll have at your disposal, like magic blockers that stop magic in a certain area, or the vacuum trap that sucks objects in—and exposes them as witches if they get sucked in. Hunters can also eventually roll around the arenas as balls, smashing through props. We’ll let those thoughts simmer for a bit. For now, it would be helpful to establish what exactly Witch it! gets right. Immediately striking are the visuals, which are cartoony and spooky and perfect for the Halloween season. If you’re looking for something other than a straight-up horror game to get in the mood, this is it. Both character design and cosmetics are distinct and fun, and the game consistently exudes charm. Even the crafting system around the cosmetics has its moments — it’s an excellent way to break up the gameplay, and it’s fun when you get a cosmetic that prompts all sorts of ideas about putting together an outfit for your character. That said, the crafting screen is buggy and difficult to work with, often displaying the wrong number of ingredients you possess or jumping back to the first entry on the list, seemingly at random. Witch It is entirely new to me, and I haven’t followed this title which came out as an Early Access in 2017. There’s a good community, and there was never a time when I was looking to find a game. Well, there was, but spectating as the servers were mostly full. I won’t review the community spirit etc. as I don’t spend my time on forums, Discord or similar but when I first looked into the game, there were a handful of people saying that there were cheaters in the game. No doubt this happens in most online games, and now and again, I hear my daughter moan that someone is using hacks in Fortnite. From my experience, there was never a moment I felt anyone had hacked the game or found me too quickly as a witch. On the contrary, I could moan about it the other way round as the majority of the time I found a witch was because someone had provoked them into moving or their chicken (not a euphemism) was in my location at the time, and I may have been awarded the glory.

The conflict in Witch It is a bit less violent and antagonistic than Vampire Slayer. It is after all, basically hide and seek. The main tool in the witch arsenal is shapeshifting. A witch can mimic objects in the game and maneuver into position to beat the clock. The trick is blending in. If you turn into a bottle, you don’t want to be found propped up against some firewood. The shapeshifting mechanics themselves feel pretty fun. Not enough games let you turn into a floppy pizza pie careening through the air. But hiding as it turns out, is inconsistently gratifying gameplay. Because if you do it well, your interaction with the game ends. You can talk a walk, make a sandwich, check your Twitter. There’s the tension that you’ll be caught and have to leap into action. But your dedication to that tension is entirely rooted in how badly you want to win the game. And I guess my competitive spirit is deficient because hiding started to feel a lot like waiting. I liked hiding back when I was playing Vampire Slayer. But that was different. That was more like stalking. You wanted to remain unseen, but you felt empowered.
