Riders Republic sticks very closely to the existing open-world racing game formula we’ve seen many times before, but having an extreme sports version of those racers is hardly a bad thing. Whether you’re catching air in a snowboard trick competition or flying through said air in a wingsuit race, every one of Riders Republic’s sports is an absolute blast to take on. Riding bikes is all about precision and managing your peddling stamina meter, which becomes more challenging depending on your terrain. Riding a bike in the snow, for example, is a recipe for disaster that’s best avoided. Using your skis or a snowboard, on the other hand, is all about controlling your speed and momentum as you slide across more slippery locales. And in contrast to bike riding, skis and snowboards perform pretty terribly on harder terrain like dirt and pavement. Meanwhile, the wingsuit requires you to embrace your inner daredevil and glide or rocket dangerously close to hard objects at a terminal velocity. Mastering each machine of gnarliness Riders Republic offers is challenging, diverse, and guaranteed to result in a few hilarious but nasty spills.

The events you’ll be using them in can be just as varied, throwing you down dozens of mountainsides with plenty of different goals to shake things up. Races make speed the name of the game, and they can be some seriously tense competitions that put your reflexes and guts to the test as you shred downhill, fly over gaps, and dodge obstacles. But you’ll also need to master your showoff skills in stunt contests where the key to success is pulling off tricks and grinding on rails to rack up points in the style of other arcade sports games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Mastering each course as I earned better gear, leveled up each of my extreme sport careers, and unlocked even more contests was consistently satisfying, and the incredible amount of things to do meant that loop never got stale. Eventually you’ll level up enough to gain access to more difficult activities, including Big Events and Boss Events. Unfortunately, these don’t particularly live up to their name, in that they basically just feel like slightly longer versions of the standard events. Instead of doing something crazy like Forza Horizon’s Showcases, Riders Republic uses these activities as a sort of skill check to confirm you’ve gained enough loot and improved your skill enough to advance to the next bracket of challenges. That’s fine, but not as exciting as I’d hoped from a game that’s constantly shoving its over-the-top qualities in your face. To help you pass some of Riders Republic’s more challenging undertakings, you’ll unlock new gear as you progress that’ll make the going much easier. A rocket wingsuit with higher stats will make it easier for you to turn and use your rocket boost for longer, while a better snowboard might make you faster in deep snow that would normally slow you down. Getting new gear is essential to be competitive in the most contentious activities and while it’s certainly possible to compete with subpar gear, those who have grinded (literally and figuratively) for better gear have an incredible advantage.

Therefore, leveling up and gaining new gear becomes a high priority and an addictive part of a sandbox that already gives you dozens of reasons to keep racing. Event markers pop up like energy drink-branded pestilence, waiting for the park ranger protagonist to clean them all up using their aptitude for shredding, catching sick bumps and other such hijinks. Marquee events, unlocked by reaching milestones in a given discipline, are particular highlights and throw in wildly different geographical propositions. And tucked away behind the events are super-technical pro line runs that require Super Meat Boy-like feats of daring and dexterity. There’s definitely variety here. Once in a while, a different disembodied voice ushers us to mass events, where up to 64 players embark on logistically absurd jaunts by bike, skis, snowboards, and rocket wingsuits. It’s like speed-dating SSX, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX and Superman 64 with an entire lobby of PUBG sociopaths for company. There’s a lot more to digest in this melange of Forza Horizon, The Crew 2 and Destiny than Steep offered. With each completed event, Riders Republic showers new stuff everywhere. New gear, a new character level, new events, bucks to spend on outfits, sponsors who offer daily challenges which, when completed, shower even more stuff all over the floor.

Multiplayer and Mass Races.

It’s easy to just let yourself get caught in the jetstream of this frenzied progression and whizz along in it, enjoying Riders Republic on its own terms. Do a race, listen to someone describe how rad that thing you did was, watch a brief cutscene of a snowboard being unlocked, do another race. That’s my advice. Don’t think too much, just keep nodding along with the X-Games bros and winning stars. Because like many a 20th century communist republic, this one is built on shaky ground. It starts with the physics models underpinning the many disciplines on offer. It’s clear from the first overcaffeinated whooping noise that Ubisoft Annecy is going for simplicity, but in whittling each handling model down to such basic terms it’s taking away much of what ought to be interesting about sending a MTB down a mountain. It was hours before I accepted that there really is no wheelie function, and no way to endo. Once I’m airborne I can stick it to Isaac Newton in myriad ways from 360 superman backflips to tuck no handers, but on terra firma GTA V’s cast has a wider repertoire of tricks than the denizens of this Republic. One named, lest we forget, after Riders.

Some of that brilliance might be familiar from Steep, 2016’s equally open-ended extreme sports outing upon which so much of Riders Republic is built. This is neither as focussed – there’s a broadening out of disciplines to include bikes as well as terrain types that go beyond mere snow here – nor quite so strange, with no spoken word interjections from the mountains themselves (at least none that I’ve come across in over a dozen hours or so of play – this is a vast, vast game after all). It is deeply, gloriously silly, though, a playground told with an exuberance that’s infectious as you pedal down perilous courses in matching giraffe outfits. It’s annoying, too, especially at first when the overlong tutorial takes hold and refuses to let go for the best part of an hour. This is one of those extreme sports games that overlays its action with grating voice overs, the dialogue more likely to give you a nosebleed than any of the highest altitudes you’re invited to scale. Given how pervasive that voiceover can be in the first hour, I wouldn’t be surprised if it proved an endurance test too far for most players. Persevere, though, and it’s then often remarkable how eager Riders Republic is to get out of the way. Partly that’s down to how you can fast travel to any event on the map and be taken there near instantaneously .

Soar down a mountainside in a wingsuit and you can maintain some of that momentum as you morph in a glitchy instant to two wheels – or perhaps send your mountain bike off a cliff edge and out into the blue yonder before firing up the rocket wingsuit and shooting out across the horizon. It’s dumb and outrageously fun, the act of sportswitching via the radial menu as much a part of the process as performing tricks for the more adventurous player. It’s fiddly, too, as is the core of Riders Republic. There are three control configurations on offer – a trickster one that maps stunt moves to the right stick, a racer one that affords you camera control and a third one that softly mimics Steep’s own scheme – and neither of them works flawlessly, with a lack of heft gently undermining all of the sports on offer here. It’s far from disastrous, mind, and something you quickly adjust to, though it’s worth knowing this is an extreme sports game with a certain lightness to its feel. All that’s more than compensated for by what Riders Republic does well, and by its sheer maximalist exuberance. There’s fine detail here too that helps sell each discipline, such as the beautifully crunchy snow that tangibly deforms when on snowboard or skis, the whistle of the wind when in a wingsuit or that gorgeous soft whir of a well-oiled chainset that accompanies a bike ride.
