Each and every character has different abilities, which can change how you choose to play the game. There is certainly a character for everyone. The characters themselves look good for 3D models, along with the backgrounds and environments around them. The characters are voiced by their original Japanese voice actors from the One Piece series. At the title screen, players can navigate through a glossary, which gives them full reign to listen to the soundtrack (which was great), as well as look at player models of characters and even cutscenes from the game. There are over one hundred side missions and a new game mode, Titan Mode. Titan Mode challenges the player to execute precise timing and dodging, allowing for a more calculated gaming experience. Also newly introduced are aerial action mechanics, which allow the player to perform combos and moves while in the air, something the previous games did not offer. Within the gameplay, its nothing special of mashing buttons to perform combo attacks. There is a dodge button, which you cannot spam as it uses up stamina. When you use up stamina, you are unable to dodge and have to wait for the stamina bar to slowly come back before you can perform more dodges and rolls.

Although button-mashing is a simple concept, there is a learning curve to it if you want to maximize the damage of your attacks. Timing your combos to get the most damage is ideal but you still can button mash your way through hordes of enemies. The positioning of the camera in the game isn’t the best and it sometimes works as a disadvantage when using certain characters over others. Faster characters, while in theory seem like the most efficient ones to use, are hard to track due to the difficulty the camera has focusing at times. The joy of this game is finding the best character that suits your playstyle. Maybe you want a fast character, by all means, try it out! You may like it but it is personally not my cup of tea. I preferred the slower and more stationary characters, as they were easier to track with the camera. One Piece fans will love this game. Although I have not seen a single episode of One Piece’s anime or read any of the manga, I enjoyed playing it. You don’t need to have a vast knowledge of the One Piece lore to enjoy this game, as the main storyline introduces you to the characters and locations within the One Piece universe. Overall, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 was a lot of fun and I highly recommend it if you enjoy Dynasty Warriors-like games.DEAD OR ALIVE 6

Coming from Koei Tecmo, or more specifically from Omega Force, the series is known as Kaizoku Musou in Japan, and joins many other franchises in receiving the one-vs-countless style gameplay of the Musou. Whether it be the iconic franchises of Dynasty Warriors and Warriors Orochi, or the adaptations of popular series like Berserk and Zelda, not to mention the upcoming Persona Scramble later this year. When the game opens, things really hit the ground running. Placed into the shoes of Luffy on the shores of Onigashima, fighting through hordes of Beast Pirate Warriors and eventually facing off against two of the Four Emperors. Fans of the manga will recognise this as something wholly original. Luffy has, at time of writing, yet to make it to the shores of Onigashima in the manga, though he’s getting close. Adapting the most recent arc to retell an original, non-canon story is a common occurrence in the Pirate Warriors series. After this glimpse, the story starts at the beginning. Quite literally. Jumping all the way back to the moment Luffy received a Straw Hat from a certain Red Haired fellow, though the gameplay doesn’t start there. It doesn’t begin until Alabaster. Instead, an abridged video replays key events for each arc between these points.

using the cut scenes from earlier games in the series, until it reaches the Straw Hats’ first battles in Alabaster. It may be retreading well-worn ground, but it’s a common issue when it comes to games of legendary anime series. One that Dragon Ball and Naruto have suffered with for years. As has One Piece. Either the game has to have a wholly original story, which is often lacking in the quality of its source material, or it retells the same stories over and over. To cover the content missing between Pirate Warriors 3 and Pirate Warriors 4, the only content would consist of a truly canon retelling of Dressrosa through to the current act of Wano, and since Wano has not yet reached its conclusion, an alternative, original take to the Wano story. That wouldn’t give a whole lot of content to make up the story. Zou and Whole Cake Island could be expanded but simply not enough. So it makes sense to add some previously covered content. Instead, Pirate Warriors 4 picks and chooses what stories it wants to cover. Some pretty huge omissions. No Skypiea; no Thriller Bark; and no Impel Down. These moments are instead covered in abridged story sequences between chapters. Fans of One Piece are very lucky when it comes to video game adaptations. From fighting games to sprawling action adventure games, Bandai Namco have ensure that fans of the popular anime could spend all of their free time playing exclusively One Piece titles. For many, the jewel in the crown of this mountain of games is the Pirate Warrior series. Now, Omega Force has returned with some big changes to this acclaimed Musou series for One Piece Pirate Warriors 4. For someone who hasn’t played a Musou (or Warriors) style game, there’s a very specific appeal to the genre. You’ll find yourself fighting hordes of practically defenseless enemies with over the top moves, and it’s incredibly satisfying. Among these pitiful foes you’ll also find a few stronger enemies (in the case of One Piece Pirate Warriors these will often be named characters) which require a little more nuance. Some of these enemies have armour to break and become vulnerable after a big attack.

Environmental Crumbs.

These confrontations are where the difficulty lies, alongside strategising how to effectively push back an enemy army and capture their bases effectively. Protecting your allies and pushing back the enemy forces is the key to guiding Luffy and company to victory. There’s a huge amount of mission variety throughout One Piece Pirate Warriors 4. Some missions will find you overcoming an army of enemies, some require you to locate a specific enemy, and some are simply one-on-one battles. Not all of the mission types are created equal however, and the best stages are generally the ones with the basic “Defeat the enemy army” objective. One particularly irritating mission early on called for you to find the talent building in town, with a camera that doesn’t allow you to look up. The variety lends itself well to adapting the franchise’s storyline to the game however, with missions and cutscenes covering the most important moments of the anime. The story focuses on eight specific (more modern) arcs of One Piece’s epic tale, beginning at the Alabasta Arc and stretching all the way to the most recent episodes. In previous outings, Omega Force has tried to pack decades of the show into a handful of missions.

Pirate Warriors 4 doesn’t suffer from spreading the story so thin, and hours of missions and cutscenes help tell the familiar story in a more fleshed out manner. Newcomers to the choppy waters of the series will still struggle to keep up with the narrative, but fans will enjoy the trip down memory lane all the same. Outside of the story mode, you can replay missions as different characters in Free Log mode, or move straight into Treasure Log mode. Treasure Log is a huge selection of (largely) unrelated missions. There’s potentially hundreds of hours of content to be found here, with three tiers of stages to play, crew levels to grind and a host of unlockable characters. It wouldn’t be a Musou game without an incredibly diverse cast of characters, and Pirate Warriors 4 doesn’t disappoint in that department. If there’s a series favourite you’d like to play as, chances are they’ll be available. Each playable character fits into one of four classes – Power, Speed, Technique and Sky. Each of these character types have their own quirks, but I generally found the more maneuverable Speed and Sky options more fun to play as then their clunkier alternatives.

Whatever class you choose to play as, all of your favourite pirates have vastly different attacks and specials to discover and level up. One of the major changes to the series is the way that special attacks work. Instead of building up one special meter and unleashing fury on a group of foes, you can now set four separate abilities that charge independently. These range from huge flashy attacks, to buffs that turn you into an (even more) unstoppable powerhouse. Each character has multiple of these that you can unlock, and set between battles. There are a few things that set apart PW4 from other Warriors titles, but the most significant feature is the combo system. PW4 has incredibly smooth-flowing combos. There are basic attacks, charge attacks, and a mid-combo launcher. This lets you bash enemies on the ground, launch them into the air to continue the attack, and cancel out of the combo by using your dash button to start anew. Enemies have an armor gauge that is broken through repeated attacks, and once it is down, they take more damage and are stunned. Engaging in lengthy air combos allows you to get the most out of every enemy weak point, and figuring out how to string together combos for optimal damage gives the game a Warriors depth that is only comparable to Hyrule Warriors.NARUTO TO BORUTO SHINOBI STRIKER
