So be prepared to go through a few stages here and there a second or even third time around to stock up. That said, at least the time goes by nicely, as you build up moolah simply by brawling with thugs. And the more hits you land, the more your money multiplies – and it can add up rather quickly this way. The gameplay isn’t jam-packed with top-of-the-line gameplay, but what’s here certainly works. The punches and kicks land beautifully; and a special move can clear the arena once fully charged, which, thankfully, doesn’t take too long at all. There are boss encounters as well, which are fairly easy to get through once you figure out patterns. Another thing that Last Beat Enhanced gets right is its presentation. The game looks like a classic NES style brawler throughout, with a great amount of detail. What’s more, the bonus bike riding stages are a treat, with obstacles that pop up out of nowhere and force you to scramble while you collect additional fuel. The in-between stage sequences could’ve used a little more animation or life (or something), as they’re merely static images. Other than that, however, Last Beat does fine on visuals.

I also enjoy the soundtrack. It does loop a bit much for its own good, but the pleasant ditties here are worth a listen, and make for good fighting tunes. The sound effects are okay, but minimal at best. Still, that leaves room to enjoy the music. Overall, I was pleased with Last Beat Enhanced. It doesn’t push too far forward to lead the genre, but finds its comfortable place anyway, especially with good two-player action. Not to mention the fact that the game is a mere ten bucks, which you’ll get more than enough of your money’s worth from. Go on, step to this Beat. A good, affordable brawler with replay value and strong co-op, Last Beat Enhanced does just enough to score a comfortable spot in your beat-em-up collection. Later on, you unlock a lizard person named Din and if you gather enough money in the levels you can spend it to unlock another guy named Ares and a lady named Zari. Each character plays slightly differently and has different stats like strength and speed. The game doesn’t really do anything new for the genre as stages have you fighting against gang members, picking up various weapons to use, collecting money, and avoiding hazards. Special stages can be unlocked and played and help change things up from the normal gameplay and every regular stage ends in a boss fight that is pretty easy to beat once you identify how they attack. The fighting itself is serviceable as you’ll mash the attack button to take out the AI enemies which aren’t too smart but can still be deadly if you let yourself get surrounded. Hit detection felt a little off to me though which caused me not to enjoy this one as much as some more polished beat ‘em ups. Another element of the game that I felt was off was the rate at which you earn money. Upgrades cost a good chunk of change and you simply don’t get much of it from playing through a stage.

Because of that you’ll have to go back and grind stages if you want to unlock everything.The visuals in Last Beat Enhanced are suitably retro and will remind you of games you might have played on the NES. There are some little things here and there with the UI that look a bit off and the static images used throughout aren’t the best but it’s a fine-looking pixel art game at the end of the day. Music is a big thing for me in beat ‘em ups with some of the ones released this year having spoiled me. The music here is fine but isn’t memorable and doesn’t have enough variety. If you’re a trophy hunter you will find an easy trophy list consisting of 14 trophies with a Platinum. It’s another one of those games that doesn’t even require you to play much of it to earn them all.Last Beat Enhanced is a solid retro-styled beat ‘em up but one that doesn’t do anything to elevate itself to be a must-play. The cost of entry is low and for that price you get quite a few stages of beat ‘em up gameplay to play through either by yourself or with a friend locally. Last Beat Enhanced is an old-school, stylised beat ’em up. Think along the lines of the NES version of Double Dragon and there you go. Featuring multiple characters, each with varying stats, strengths and weaknesses. You have your standard beat ’em up gameplay and plough your way through dozens upon dozens of bad guys (and gals) and take on a boss at the end of each stage. There’s one attack button, a jump, block/parry and of course, a special move. It really is all pretty much standard stuff. What gives Last Beat Enhanced a bit of a USP is that you earn money for upgrades and to unlock new characters. How you earn that money is simple, beat people up. You’ll earn coin for every hit you land and every enemy you defeat. Now, if you can string together blows without you getting hit yourself, you’ll increase your beat multiplier. The higher the multiplier, the more money you will earn. So, there’s a real incentive to not just ‘button mash’, but to try and actually pick your targets and attacks carefully, as to not leave yourself open to a fist to the face and break your multiplier. Money can also be found just lying around on the levels too.

As this is a classic beat ’em up, you’ll find various items lying around or when you break open boxes, barrels and such. Health items, weapons and so on. The main stages are interjected with some bonus stages such as you riding a motorbike or smashing up a car with your fists (where have I seen that before?). As I said earlier, this is very standard stuff for this genre. As you can see from the trailer and screens here, Last Beat Enhanced has a very 8-bit graphical style. It kind of looks like a game that would have been produced if the NES had a love child with the Master System. The pixel art is fine and works well too, with some nice little background details on the levels. There are secrets to find on each stage and loads of unlockable art and such. There’s also the addition of a two-player couch co-op option, very old school. Last Beat Enhanced is going to set you back the princely sum of around £9, available now on all the consoles. Oscar Celestini has done a great job of capturing that old-school beat ’em up feel. But I don’t think that I’d be happy spending £9 on this though.

It’s a nice little distraction for a couple of hours and fun for a short while. If you want to unlock all of the extras and art work, etc, then be prepared for a lot of grinding, several dozen hours of it. Then there is the upgrade thing, they only last for one run. You can spend an hour or so saving up the cash for an upgrade, and it’ll only last until you lose your one and only life. Then you have to spend that hour or so to buy the upgrade again. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t enjoy Last Beat Enhanced, because I did. It really is a well-made and is a loving tribute to the likes of Double Dragon and the whole late 80s/early 90s beat ’em up craze. I just don’t think that this is quite worth the £9 asking price.
