When a construction company drills a hole in the basement of the grandparents’ house – causing monsters to flood in – the boy is given a wooden stick from his dog and sets off on an adventure to get to the bottom of what’s going on. Though the narrative is kept to a bare minimum, the lighthearted and rather off-the-wall story at the core of this adventure is a welcome aspect of Away that provides just enough mystery to keep you guessing. Gameplay takes the shape of a first-person action title with roguelike elements mixed in, but the implementation of the random elements is sketchy at best. Your character has only a hefty stick to fight with, but hit detection on strikes is a bit off, and this can make it difficult to judge when exactly to initiate an attack against an enemy. All enemies attack you in one of two ways – either by running into you or shooting something at you – but there seems to be an unusually large window where enemy melee attacks land from farther away than they should. Your stick doesn’t have very much range at all.

So finding that sweet spot where you can strike enemies without them striking you is frustrating and hard to nail down. This issue with melee attacks can be combated somewhat by the consumable, rare fireworks you can use to strike from a distance, but they’re hard to come by and have a noticeably long fuse that delays the explosion. You start out the game by exploring overworld areas dotted with treasure chests that contain helpful health or money pickups, a handful of NPCs that can be recruited to your ‘party’ (more on that later), and entrances to mini-dungeons that you have to clear to unlock the boss dungeon for that area. It’s a simple enough setup, but problems arise when you run into the randomized mini-dungeons, which can vary wildly in quality and depth. Sometimes, you get a decently-sized collection of rooms with a good mixture of puzzles, platforming, and combat, while other times, you literally get a small, one-room cave where the boss lever is guarded by three weak enemies. Away: Journey to the Unexpected decides to do away with the mini-dungeons entirely and just puts the boss levers in the overworld with next to no challenges to trip them. What starts out as a potentially promising adventure gradually curdles into something decidedly sloppier; something which is unacceptable given how short Away: Journey to the Unexpected is to begin with. A glimmer of hope can be found in the NPC recruitment system, but this, too, is inevitably squashed by baffling design choices. Once you’ve found the ‘friendship cube’ in a level’s overworld, you can talk to any of the NPCs for a chance to recruit them through a cool Persona-style dialogue system where you have to say the correct things to persuade them into joining you. If they agree, that character can then be swapped in at the press of a button, replacing your stick with something much more effective. Whether it’s a shotgun that one-shots most enemies or a staff that shoots fireballs, each character has a unique ability that makes dealing with enemies much less of a headache.

Unravel a Funny And Light-Hearted Story, With Just The Right Pinch Of Rogue-Lite Elements.

The issue, however, lies in recruiting the characters to begin with. If you happen to say the wrong thing when talking to them at first, that character can be locked off to you for the rest of that run, meaning that you’ll have to die and work your way back to that point again for another shot at attempting to recruit them to your party. This is made even more tedious by the fact that you need to have recruited all characters to beat the game, a move that astoundingly manages to introduce padding to a game with an anaemic amount of content. Granted, subsequent runs are made somewhat easier and more tolerable by the introduction of upgrades and shortcuts to speed things along slightly, but it unfortunately doesn’t take very long at all for the roguelike elements to become quite grating. The roguelike genre has exploded in popularity in recent years with titles like Rogue Legacy acting as a shining example of what games in that style can be. Away: Journey to the Unexpected is a game that takes a healthy amount of inspiration from its roguelike peers, but strips away the freedom of choice, leaving only an illusion that the choices in your runs truly matter. Away: Journey to the Unexpected combines the presentation of a JRPG with the randomly-generated elements of roguelikes to create an initially gripping combination. You assume the role of a young boy staying with his grandparents while his parents are away working their super secret job. Before you’re even able to get out of bed you find a construction company has begun digging into your house’s basement. This sets you on a small-scale yet grand adventure, taking you to forests, deserts, tropical islands, and the Arctic. Away does a superb job of making what starts as a very minor adventure feel like a monumental task. Much of that stems from the main character, who is the antithesis of your typical video game hero. Your character is meek and not at all equipped for battling monsters; you start with a paltry three hearts of health and have a single stick you can swing as a weapon.

As you step out of your house and into the outside world, you’ll be facing enemies that take one or two hits to kill. However, you’re incredibly weak and timing your stick swings takes a while to get the hang of, meaning you’ll be fearing even the cutest of enemies in the beginning. Most enemies you encounter will be found in randomised dungeons. No two dungeons are ever the same, making the relatively frequent deaths less of a chore, particularly when you’re still getting the hang of things. Inside these dungeons, you’ll be searching for a lever you need to pull to open up the boss dungeon in the area. Strangely, only two of the worlds you travel to actually feature dungeons. In the ice and tropical beach levels, the levers you need to pull are merely on the overworld. We found we enjoyed the dungeons far more, and that pulling levers placed around the overworld was far too simple in comparison. Dungeons can get pretty tricky at times, particularly the much longer boss dungeons. The aforementioned bosses also have dozens of hit points, making them tougher to bring down.

Luckily, your character has a special ability to recruit other people, robots, and animals to his party. Scattered around the world and in item shops are Friendship Cubes that give you a slot to recruit someone. You can recruit up to three characters, each of which has a unique ability, and this variety allows for distinct load-outs and strategy. Our personal strategy involved using the character who can one-shot kill all non-boss monsters combined with a character who would drop health pickups. To keep this from making the game too easy, characters have energy meters that are depleted upon using their ability. Once it reaches zero you can no longer use them, and if you’re not careful you could be forced to fight a boss armed only with your stick. I’ve broken from the usual format in order to approach Away from what is by far its strongest suit- the visuals. The game seeks to emulate its opening sequence with a distinct graphic style, using cartoonish textures in its landscapes, and a nostalgic two-dimensional NPC facing system. Essentially, you’ll never see another character’s back, as they automatically track to your location.

This means their delightful illustrations and bopping animations are always running. Playing Away feels like stepping into a cartoon, especially since its character designs are so endearing. You’ll meet talking trees, mutated construction workers, defense robots, and an angelic popsicle stick on your way throughout the game, and each one of them looks as ludicrous as they sound. From the moment you meet your grandparents and doofy little dog, to the cute crayon drawing right outside your room that depicts your name, Away truly does look the part of its “feel-good” description, one that is enhanced by its very laid-back gameplay loop. The game features a variety of locales that (oddly enough) rarely offer anything outside of the unexpected. You have your forest, desert, island, arctic, factory, moon castle… you know, the usual stuff. While the Switch handheld screen depicts these effectively, the transition to a television screen might stumble a bit – I had to adjust my image settings in order to see what was going on in the space castle, which has tons of dark corners, as well as to make sense of the sea of red that was the desert biome.
