Titan killing quickly becomes a factory floor of identikit button presses, and the game almost exclusively consists, not surprisingly, of killing titans. Typing each of these criticisms pains me, since the anime captured my heart back in 2013, and Wings of Freedom is a child of the show rather than the manga. With that in mind, let’s first focus on where the game succeeds, before we descend into my myriad complaints. The piece of equipment that so captured the minds of viewers in the anime is known as 3D manoeuvre gear. It allows the soldiers of humanity to ascend to the skies and fight monsters that are often 20 times the size of a normal person. Think Spider-Man with 19th-century pressurised cable guns. WoF manages to replicate this improbable equipment surprisingly well, allowing players to swing across the map semi-elegantly, and effectively removing all borders from the environment. Anyone who watched the anime’s Survey Corps with envy will undoubtedly spend their first hour delightedly “winging” their way from place to place.

The system does tend to cause collisions with buildings and other objects with annoying regularity, but when it works, you’re a dual-bladed eagle of the skies. All of the fee-fi-fo fighting is also conducted using the same gear. Players can attach themselves to one of five spots on a titan’s body: legs, arms, or nape, and enter its orbit, then moving in to deal damage when the appendage is vulnerable. At the same time, players must remain aware of a titan’s attempts to grab and gobble, as well as their cables, which become obstructed by other titans and the environment. You’re much more vulnerable on the ground than in mid-flight. There’s a rhythmic enjoyment to firing cables from position to position and feeling hyper-mobile. What could’ve resulted in clunky Tarzan fails is, in fact, a series of comprehensible swings. It’s here that Wings of Freedom delivers on the fantasy of being a titan-slayer. You glide, you circle, and then move in for the final blow on the creature’s only true vulnerable spot: the nape. Except that it’s almost never the “final blow”; it’s the first. Unfortunately, the economics of this system are broken, and most of the time it simply makes more sense to cut down the buggers as fast as possible. I refrained from attacking anything but the nape for hours – with the exception of the odd boss-level titan who has to be slashed in a specific order – and still accrued enough resources to max out my current set of weapons. If the titans were quicker on their feet, then hacking off a leg might be a wise course of action, but they’re lumbering beasts who can, on the whole, be kept at bay with ease. Inevitably, you’ll want to play efficiently, because you’re going to be killing a lot of the same enemies over and over again. This can only lead to one pattern of attack: grapple on nape, find angle, strike nape, move to next titan. Since most giants can be struck down with a single hit, combat feels more like a one-button slaughterhouse than a test of agility and guile. Ease and repetition also plague the game’s macro elements. Almost every mission consists of the same pattern: get placed in an open area, slaughter titans near objectives, kill the last, extra-strong titan known as the “final subjugation target”.

The game’s expansive environments are filled with the same old things: idiots who need saving from – you’ve guessed it – titans. Attack on Titan is a peculiar beast, and I’m not just thinking about the disturbingly naked giants that prance around and try to bite your head off. Developer Omega Force’s third-person action game interpretation of the franchise goes through the plot of the anime and takes the first stab at adapting a bit of the manga that the anime has yet to cover. While it does a great job of capturing the brutal essence and fast action of the show, it has mixed results presenting the manga’s content and its own slog of an original ending in an interesting way. If you’ve never experienced Attack on Titan, this isn’t the worst way to do it — that would be Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains — but of course it’s not as good as manga either. The roughly 15-hour campaign hits all the essential plot events as Eren and his crew join the military and seek revenge against the titans for destroying their families, homes, and lives, but you’ll miss a lot of the more nuanced details and political scenes. That’s not too bad for the campaign, though: the focus isn’t on Attack on Titan’s politics, but on decimating titans. I found a lot of the cutscenes to be a nice refresher for some events I forgot. The introduction to subjugating titans is a little intimidating, but the controls are rather intuitive once you get used to the combo of swinging, targeting, then slashing the back of a titan’s neck. Once I did, I practically flew through the map as I hunted down targets using the omni-directional maneuver gear (which lets you move a lot like Spider-Man) to swing between buildings and trees with peak efficiency. Engagements are quick, but require precision: after locking onto one of five possible locations on a titan’s body, you’ll need to gain speed and hit the attack button at just the right time to do the most damage possible. Executing this perfectly time after time made me feel powerful, but it took me a while to get there. If you do execute the combo incorrectly — attack at the wrong time or if you attack without enough speed — you’ll disconnect from the titan and fall back to the ground.

Dynamic Combate.

This gives titans an opportunity to trample, hit, or grab you. Sometimes I got careless while I was targeting a titan’s limb, and the beast would snatch me out of the air, or throw their arm so that I was flug far away. If you miss an attack, a message flashes on the screen about why you failed. That was helpful while I learned how to master the system. It’s gross, but there’s a weird satisfaction in coming out of a fight drenched in titan blood. While taking on one or two titans isn’t too difficult, the diversity in size and type of titan kept me on my toes. An abnormal crawling titan that leapt in the air was a lot harder to subjugate than a relatively small, five-meter titan that went down in one hit. As I progressed to later missions and faced more specialized enemies, like the female titan that more actively blocks attacks and counter-attacks, I found myself needing to be more tactical with my resources and play to my character’s strengths.  One of the things that kept the constant titan hunt fresh was the character roaster. Though you’ll mainly play as Eren, Armin, Mikasa, or Levi, there is a point where the campaign allows you to play missions as one of 10 characters.

Each has their own combat style that matches their personality. For example, Armin isn’t the strongest fighter but he is a brilliant tactician, so to match that, while playing as him or another leader-type character you’ll have the ability to direct a squad of collected comrades to attack certain points on a titan. Then we have Levi, one of the fastest and strongest fighters, so he has the ability to attack multiple times after the first hit. Combat abilities learned through leveling up may repeat between characters, but the different ability combinations helped them feel more authentic. The first chunk of the campaign has nice mission and map variety; I got to traverse plains on horseback, escort terrified settlers to safe zones, and stop the female titan from completely obliterating the Stohess District. Each mission also features side quests with various characters that, when helped, can either give you more supplies or join you in combat. It’s not necessary, but hearing them scream when they’re defeated wasn’t really an option for me, either, because Omega Force captures the horror of Attack on Titan well. When random scouts sometimes get grabbed and eaten by titans, the sound is bloodcurdling. Their deaths don’t affect success in the mission, but I always made sure to get revenge.

Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom (henceforth referred to as “Wings of Freedom”) is a semi-linear action JRPG developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. The game is an adaptation of the events of the anime series, while also shedding some light on details which went unexplained in the show. For the uninformed, Attack on Titan is set in a world where humans live in fear of giant (sometimes colossal) humanoid creatures called Titans. These creatures are generally zombie-like in their thought, except instead of going for just brains, they eat humans whole. Humanity has taken refuge within a city divided into three districts. These districts are determined by the walls they are behind. The game opens with the fall of one of the walls due to the impressive kick of a colossal titan. As a result, the populace is in danger and needs to retreat further into the city to remain safe and Titans now roam inside the walls.
