In a world filled with cyclopes, trolls, and other mystical critters, you will find the magic you need to heal the forest and the sea with the power of kindness. Players wander through towns and forests looking for ways to bring the rain back to a parched world. Interacting with others moves the story forward and gives the player quests to help heal the land. The controls are as simple as the graphics; players have the basic move buttons (you can use WASD or the directional keys), E is the interact key, and players can eventually use and instrument to play notes with 1, 2, 3, and 4. There are two collectables in the game: teardrops and hats. There is 12 total that can be found in the about two hours worth of gameplay. There are also four hats, and each of these hats can be worn at any time. Each hat changes the dialogue for some of the NPCs out in the world when you are wearing it. While it’s only about two hours long, there’s a lot of heart and soul packed into those two hours. The puzzles are unique and fun, involving a surprising number of different mechanics. You don’t just chat with people, move to the next person, and keep talking to others until the game is finished; there’s a lot to do from an archery contest to catching cats and singing back to birds. The background music is both soothing and fits well with the setting and the look of the game. It’s fairly repetitive, but it isn’t invasive or loud, so that did not bother me at all. Just a piece of calming lute music playing gently as you explore this sketched world. While someone might not enjoy the simple, pencil-sketched look of the game, but to me it was charming. The characters are interesting even if you can’t see their faces or expressions. A Winding Path is worth a playthrough even if you don’t like the look; the need for realistic graphics pales in comparison to everything else the game offers. It’s too short. When I finished the game, I was really hoping against hope that there was another chapter. I knew it was short, but I was so sad when it ended. Hopefully.

Three Eyed Games will add more as time goes on. I kind of wish that there was a short of checklist of live quests, but that didn’t really take away from the experience. If there is nothing you can think of that’s wrong with a game except that it’s too short, then that’s probably a really good game. It’s worth the $8 USD, even with the short length. I had a lot of fun playing this short romp through a pencilled-in world, and I think anyone who likes chill meditative titles will also dig A Winding Path as well. A Winding Path was released on PC in August 2021 and has now wandered onto Switch so you can take your adventure on the road. A Winding Path wants you to relax into its calming world filled with slow-paced gameplay, charming characters and lighthearted story. Developer Three Eyed Games clearly set out with a mission to create a low-key, puzzle driven romp. Those looking for high-octane action or intense gameplay best move on now as nothing like that will happen during the two or so hours of this walking and talking adventure. The story is the heart and soul of A Winding Path and its kept fairly simple while touching on several themes. Its not clear at first why you, a wandering stick man, has to solve several problems in an unknown world. As with any story driven game things get clearer the further you explore this quaint monochromatic world. Without diving into the details of the story too much, you will explore corruption, distrust and despair across light touch puzzles and by solving problems for the locals. The interface and controls are simple, use your left stick to walk left or right and the A button to interact with characters and items. There is one part of A Winding Path that requires you to shoot arrows at targets and this again is simple, Up and Down to aim, A button to fire. The only other control is with the right stick to play your lyre in a similar way Link plays his Ocarina. The lyre is also used to call upon rain clouds but it would spoil the story to explain more. Suffice it to say you will need to use water in several puzzles and making rain comes in handy. The story moves along by helping the locals of three separate areas.

Mend a world stricken by distrust and restore unity among its inhabitants.

You start in a simple village with only a few inhabitants before moving into a town and then a city. Each part of the journey requires you to solve more detailed puzzles. However, none of the puzzles in A Winding Path is particularly difficult. Most require you to talk to one person and then travel to another area to talk to another. The focus is on the characters and their plight rather than pulling on your puzzle-solving skills in any meaningful way. The real pleasure in A Winding Path is uncovering twelve dewdrops that act as milestones for your progression. You don’t need to find them all to finish the main story but many will want to solve the mini-mysterious to uncover them. Some are fairly easy to find and are presented naturally, several though, will require a little thought and exploration. Every time you find three dewdrops you have the chance to swap your hat out for something else. The different hats don’t change anything, they’re purely cosmetic, but it’s a nice touch. A Winding Path is a perfect game to while away a Sunday afternoon. It’s a soothing, non-taxing story adventure that can be finished in about two hours. God of War Ragnarök PS5

Even the atmosphere and music are relaxing. It feels like a calm summer breeze that creates pressure-free gaming at its best. It won’t be to everyone’s taste however, those looking for actual action should pass this one by. You also won’t find difficult puzzles to challenge your brain. But if you enjoy a lighthearted romp with a relaxing feel, this is for you. Simply a lovely stroll through a beautiful little world. Admittedly I did not like the first hour of the game, I was afraid it would turn into another stick guy game with generic puzzles, but it got a lot better toward the second half, mainly because the quests just became a lot more creative, and in general, the experience gave me a strong sense of escapism, granted it happened much later in the story. Also, I am questioning the use of WASD and 1234 in a game like this, I really feel like mouse UI would be a more relaxing option, I even got a finger cramp because there is a mechanic you need to constantly spam, if you are curious about hidden interactions anyway. Hunting for hidden achievements and optional trinkets is probably the strongest part of the experience.

I think the side tasks for the collection were very enjoyable – and you can unlock some cosmetics hats too. As for the story, I was invested more in the second half of the narrative, for whatever reason I didn’t fully grasp the intended theme of the world, it’s not a familiar setting to me, but I will say that I loved the ending, it gave me a satisfying closure. I appreciate when devs try to avoid doing any meta puzzles, you know like pushing a box on a pressure plate, and this game has a little bit of that, but I do mean little, most of the puzzles are not mechanical, and you simply have to explore and interact – which in my opinion is a more enjoyable way to play a narrative game, I like the puzzles, but I prefer them in moderation, with creativity over difficulty. The few segments with the generic puzzles are very short, and they have some interesting twists on them so it’s not nearly as bad. One thing that kinda annoyed me is that some characters will react to a mechanic in the game, but others will not, and it’s a problem because for a curious player like myself.

It forces me to spam the ‘rain’ on everything in the game, only to find out I had to do it like 5% of the time. I don’t want to say that navigation in the quest lines was difficult, but I can see where you might have a problem if you don’t read the first part of the dialogue, sometimes I thought I finished the interaction only to backtrack all the way back because I didn’t do it. I want to say the game is around 3 to 4 hours, I didn’t do all of the optional achievements though. Backtracking added a lot to the length, it’s not too bad but noticeable, and I kinda wish we had something to mitigate it, maybe a hat that makes you…. faster.  The puzzle design was a little boring for me at first, but surprisingly the creativity in the quests is what eventually won me over, and overall I really like the more casual approach to the puzzle difficulty. I just feel like it happened more toward the second half, the tasks became a lot less generic and I like the originality.  I think the game just handles the optional tasks perfectly, they are hidden, they are fun, and they made me think outside the box. And hey you can get some cosmetic hats with some hidden interactions.

Good use of achievements. Again, I didn’t fully understand what the theme of the game was, but even though I was only following parts of the story here and there, I loved the ending, it was very wholesome. Also, as far as the mood, I do feel like whoever did the miscellaneous sounds did a great job, it has a good sense of escapism, and the minimalistic approach to the visuals helped too. so I don’t have any objective criticism for the game, I just thought it started slow, and got a lot better toward the end. Personally, I would prefer mouse UI, I think this is a relaxing game that could use it. I kinda wish the rain had more random interactions, it happens a few times so I spammed it everywhere just in case, and 95% of the time nothing happens. On a side note, it would have been nice if you put more care into the dialogue if you already interacted with a person, sometimes they repeat the entire thing, sometimes they don’t, sometimes it’s not obvious what happened. As this is the first review let me tell you what you get and what you dont get if the tags didnt give that away already. Obviously this is a story driven game so no complex gameplay aspects.
