That’s Not All Folks Dragon Quest X as stated many times before originally was and still is an online RPG. Does that mean this game cover all the versions the online version up until the offline release? The answer is sadly no. To sum it up, the game covers up until about version 2 while the online version is about version 6 currently. However, there are still some exclusive offline episodes so to speak found in the game. Square Enix stated that there are currently no plans for a Western Dragon Quest X Online or Offline release, but now a group of dedicated fans has decided to matters into their own hands. Earlier this week, Dragon Quest X player Exalin Excels posted an update video on their YouTube channel for the DQX Clarity project, an effort to fully translate Dragon Quest X’s in-game dialogue into English for English-speaking fans to enjoy. In this latest update, Exalin announced that while the game’s overworld NPC dialogue is still being machine translated by the AH Kmon program, all of Dragon Quest X’s story dialogue for Version 1 has been translated by hand. “Machine translation will never be a substitute for straight-up knowing Japanese,” Exalin explained in a later quote to Screen Rant editor Austin King. “But having phrases and terms saved within the machine add some context back into it, making when you DO have to use machine translation much cleaner.”

However, these small mash-ups are no substitute for a full localization of DQX, and arguably made Square Enix’s refusal to release it in the West all the more frustrating. Currently you can buy the base game for 8,500 yen or the base game plus the update for around 12,000 yen. The base game contains Dragon Quest X in an offline state very similar to the way it was released originally for the Wii, but not entirely so. It leaves in a lot of the updates that version 2 introduced, some already implemented, but more of them already there to see like a tantalizing hint barely out of reach that will be accessible once the update is released next year. One example is monster taming and having them as party members. The facilities are everywhere in the game, but you can’t actually do it yet. That was originally implemented in version 2. Moreover the original version of Dragon Quest X back in 2012 on the Wii ended with a very satisfying conclusion, but since it was designed to be continued in an online updated way, left unanswered questions.
