You might remember their previous games, Summer in Mara and Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition. We reviewed Summer in Mara and Deiland and wrote guides for both games. Like the previous games, Ankora: Lost Days was funded during a Kickstarter campaign. It’s also part of the Chibig universe, although it is an independent and unique adventure with its own story. Ankora is set some years before Deiland and Summer in Mara. Anyone who has played Chibig’s previous games will be familiar with the lead character, Mûn, who you control in Ankora. In Ankora: Lost Days, Mûn is a Space Ranger Cadet who decides to go off exploring independently. Unfortunately for Mûn, her spaceship crash lands on a strange and mysterious planet. Ankora is set up as small blocks that make up the map. Some have different environmental biomes, from forests, deserts and mountains, to name a few. It is sparsely populated, but Mûn meets some locals hanging around on some of the little islands. They live on Ankora but are troubled as the Anks believe an old enemy wants to unleash war again between their clans. Mûn sets out to explore the planet and find the missing parts of her spaceship that are spread far and wide when it crash-landed on the planet. Mûn can craft on the go as you can build a workbench anywhere as long as you have the resources. She can also make a campfire and cook food in a pot to ensure she doesn’t go hungry.Terraforming is the most significant change between Ankora: Lost Days and the previous games that Chibig has developed. To move across the blocky island, you must use a shovel to remove or add soil to the square Mûn is standing on, as the terrain is uneven and Mûn can’t jump. Doing so raises or lowers the earth that Mûn is standing on. You must first equip the shovel and then pick the option to dig up or down via the controls. Unfortunately, the control layout for the game on the Switch feels anything but intuitive when terraforming, it is fiddly to implement.Mûn can build stairs to help her traverse the terrain; the stairs are made of wood, but there are plenty of trees to cut for wood.

I was looking forward to playing Ankora: Lost Days. While the game is satisfactory in some aspects, such as the storyline and the quick crafting, there’s a letdown as well. The terraforming gets repetitive quickly. In addition, I spent the first four hours of the game hitting a roadblock, trying to move around the map. Ankora: Lost Days is a survival adventure game, though it’s very much on the relaxed side of things. You have to manage Mûn’s hunger, thirst and temperature, but once you’ve got a few levels under your belt it stops being a concern. Managing Mûn’s energy is more of an inconvenience than a serious issue. The same goes for Ankora’s many monsters. Combat is incredibly basic and easily ignored if you don’t feel like fighting. In the rare cases where Mûn faints, you’ll lose a few resources and go back to your ship, but it’s a minor setback at most. Exploring the planet is Mûn’s major concern. Ankora is set up a bit like Minecraft or Dragon Quest Builders. Everything is laid out in a square grid, from the overworld to the individual terrain tiles. There’s some degree of building and terraforming, but it’s very limited and mostly used to get around by making stairs and bridges. As Mûn explores, she’ll run into friendly Anks who will help her out in exchange for a few favours. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these favours are fetch quests. You’ll be sent from one end of the planet to the other over and over again, constantly hunting for things and then delivering them.

More often than not you won’t get much guidance on where or how to obtain what you need. Some items are random drops and others are craftables. Sometimes you can buy the item in question from a merchant, but you’ll have to remember which one sells what you want. Then you’ll have to remember which block the Ank who wanted three cheese wheels actually lives on. You see, Ankora: Lost Days is badly lacking in standard quality-of-life features. There’s a journal to track quests, but it only tells you who gave you the task and what they wanted. Camps and other locations are marked on the map, but they use generic markers and the journal doesn’t tell you which one you need to visit. If an Ank does offer some guidance then you’d better remember what they said, because they won’t repeat any dialogue. All this can make it hard to pick up a session after you left off as you’ll lack the info you need to reorient yourself. Because Ankora: Lost Days is quite open (you can navigate the whole map almost immediately) you’re bound to meet NPCs and clear quests before you’re really meant to.HYPER DEMON

This leads to characters referring to people you haven’t met, places you haven’t been and events that haven’t happened, or asking for items you won’t be able to make until you’ve completed other quests. This isn’t a huge problem in itself, but the lack of guidance means it’s easy to get bogged down in problems you can’t actually clear yet.Young intergalactic ranger Mûn has crash-landed on a planet lush with nature and she must make her way through various obstacles to find the pieces of her spaceship and repair it. On her adventure, she will meet various natives scattered across the map and feel a duty to help them with their own troubles as she explores. Ankora: Lost Days isn’t your typical action adventure game as it takes place on a grid where you’ll be presented with a large map and your goal is to fill in every square. Each square has a north, south, east, or west exit and you’ll have to use your tools and smarts to unblock obstacles in your way to continue on your journey. One square on the map is a pretty small area but most will take some time to fully explore and you’ll even occasionally be blocked completely if you don’t have the right tools or materials.

Thankfully, Mûn has come prepared with a collection of her own tools mixed with others donated by the planet’s inhabitants. First, the shovel allows Mûn to do light terraforming; increasing or decreasing the height of a block. Next, a saw can be used to cut down trees for wood, a pickaxe breaks rocks for stone, and Mûn is quite the builder of course which allows her to create consumable items that further help with traversal. For example, a wooden ramp will allow her to walk easily over a change in height, a bridge crosses water, and tools like a wooden table and campfire can be used to craft materials that are helpful for building and restoring Mûn’s energy. Arriving in a new square, observing your surroundings, and deciding which exit to aim for based on the tools that you have on-hand is a lot of fun, especially when you come across something unique such as new terrain or natives. However, I sometimes found myself stuck after running out of certain materials and having to trudge all the way back to a merchant who can sell them to me or enemies that drop them was sometimes quite annoying.

Having said that, it did force me to think about how to make the landscape more traversable so that when I did have to backtrack, it wasn’t as much of a pain to retrace the same path again. In Ankora: Lost Days, you must manage your energy and hunger by sleeping in a tent and snacking on food. First, you need to create a tent in order to sleep and it’s important to make sure you always have one available because they’re consumed on each use. Food is fairly easy to find if you’re fine with eating raw goodies like acorns but you can also create more complicated dishes on a fire if you wish.However, I didn’t find doing so necessary as Mûn is satisfied with constant snacking. Overall, the survival aspect of Ankora: Lost Days isn’t all that tough as I found most of the difficulty involves having the right materials to build items for traversal. That is, as long as I kept a tent handy but if I ran out, I simply had to find my way back to a merchant so I could buy one which merely takes time. Besides keeping yourself full of energy and food, you’ll also have to survive battles with a variety of enemies. You’ll be presented with a spear early in the campaign and you’ll use it quite frequently to take out enemies and steal the items that they drop.

The planet in Ankora: Lost Days is quite large and has different zones to explore. I loved finding a new zone and seeing how the scenery was presented. From lush forests to snowy mountains, the graphics are bright and cheerful and the orchestral soundtrack matches this aesthetic very well. There’s also an enjoyable air of mystery when you come across certain areas that don’t look like the rest then you start uncovering more information about the history of the planet and how it has interacted with more advanced technology like Mûn’s in the past. The visual contrast of these war-torn areas against the upbeat colour palette in the rest of the land shows a more serious tone which I welcomed as it brought more depth and lore to an otherwise one-note game. Although I had fun exploring in Ankora: Lost Days, my main gripe is how difficult it is to keep track of what’s available in each square. You’re given a map that you will be referencing constantly but it’s purely visual as it displays a picture of what is on a square and you must use your own memory to recall what that picture represents. I wish there was a way to hover over a square and have it list what’s available on it such as which items a given merchant sells. I’d also like to be able to place my own marker so I could remember which squares are currently blocked due to plot lines as opposed to which ones I just haven’t yet tried exploring yet.Hell Pie Switch NSP
