A fairly typical array of driving aids is on hand to tone it down a little, but I reckon Wreckfest is at its best when most of them are stripped away and we have to work harder behind the wheel. Hulking American muscle cars and land yachts squat back on their worn springs and need to be wrestled into heroic Hollywood powerslides and steered on the throttle. Smaller European and Japanese models are nimbler but they’re also lighter, and some are prone to pitching themselves into lethal tankslappers. Some of the cars feel quite similar to each other but overall there are notable differences between the range of body types, from muscle to family wagons, and from sports coupes to front-wheel drive hatchbacks. The special vehicles are another story altogether, from the top-heavy double-decker cars and rollover-prone schoolbuses to the huge harvester with its distinctive rear-wheel steering. The RV is probably my favourite as, despite its heft and relatively low power, it just loves being whipped sideways into ludicrous drifts. There’s also a motorised couch, which handles a lot better than I’d expected it would (but probably could’ve done with some wheelie bars).

There are significant differences in grip from mud or gravel to tarmac but, with Wreckfest’s well-tuned sense of weight and friction, the handling overall is smashing. Equally smashing, of course, is the actual smashing, whether you’re careening through trackside objects or mercilessly poleaxing your opposition. Wreckfest’s wonderful soft-body dynamics mean the cars can be bruised, battered, and bent beyond recognition. The level of damage goes well clear of most other driving games; certainly most everything this side of the realistic car-crashing sim Beam.NG Drive, which uses similar soft-body tech. It seems just about every panel and part can be punished, pulverised, or simply prised off completely. Wreckfest actually has two damage levels you can pick from: normal and realistic. Normal, which makes cars tough but not invincible, is more fun because you can take a few hits and keep going – but I do enjoy the challenge of playing with realistic damage, where just one mistake can see you limping to the finish line missing a wheel. Debris from collisions is persistent, too, and every new lap lays down more evidence of the high-speed war playing out on track. By the end of a race it’s likely you’ll be wading through a carpet of metal shards, splintered wood, scattered tyres, and shattered concrete. The sheer amount of mess left in the aftermath of races is wild, and yet almost never affects frame rate. I’ve had some bad slowdown on Xbox fighting through a full field of tightly-packed RVs tearing each other to bits but, other than that, it’s been extremely stable. The AI deserves a special mention as well for giving as good as it takes, and they’re tough but fallible foes. They ruined my races occasionally – but remember, that’s the point. Getting dive-bombed, T-boned, and unloaded in the middle of a drift is all part of the experience and forces us to race defensively and take different lines through corners. Just remember: there’s no penalty for doing the same thing back to them, so have at it. On paper, Wreckfest is one of those games that should never really be possible on the Switch, at least not in a sufficiently playable state.

Unique Racing Experience.

When it came to PS4 and Xbox One in 2019, even though it was widely praised, many noted that it suffered from some technical issues and extremely long loading times. Surely if you’re bringing a game to the Switch when it was already pushing more powerful hardware to its limits, you’re setting yourself up for a broken disaster? Not this time. Somehow, the wizards at developer Bugbear have not only managed to get Wreckfest running on the Switch, but it’s easily one of the better-looking racing games on the system and an absolute treat to play. If you aren’t familiar with the game, the title is a fairly accurate representation of what you can expect to find. Wreckfest consists of a series of race and demolition derby events where smashing into your opponents is very much the order of the day. Making it to the end in one piece is obviously the main aim, but those willing to put the boot in and get involved in the car-crunching action will be the most heavily rewarded (and most heavily injured, probably). That said, there are some fun, quirkier vehicles included to make things even more chaotic than they already are. Racing in a stock car or truck is one thing, but racing in an old clapped-out school bus, a caravan, or even a lawnmower helps to dial up the anarchy factor a notch. There’s a generous helping of tracks to choose from too, 45 of the gits to be exact. These range from rally-style dirt roads to Destruction Derby-style bowls, to more unique-looking tracks such as Hellride, which consists of two large half-pipe turns with a jump through a flaming ring in the middle. Once you’re done with the single-player Career mode, which gives a healthy selection of races to play through, there’s also regular online tournaments where you get to take on a series of daily and weekly challenges in an attempt to work your way up global leaderboards to earn bonus vehicles and decals. Of course, there’s also online multiplayer too, which mercifully fills the rest of the starting grid with AI bots instead of having you wait forever for a dozen players to join a game that, given the evidence of most Switch racing games that don’t have karts in them, may not have much of an online community.

Of course, anyone who’s already played Wreckfest will already know all of this (the modes, not the online tumbleweed). What’s less obvious is how well all this is carried over to what is, let’s face it, weaker hardware than the game has been ported to in the past. For the most part, we’ve been pleasantly surprised at the result, to the extent that we’d say it’s one of the best Switch ‘downscales’ we’ve ever seen (for want of a better phrase). The game aims for 30 frames per second and manages it a reasonable amount of the time without sacrificing too much in the way of detail. If you bring the camera up close to your car you can see that texture quality has been reduced to make things run a bit smoother, but when the game’s running these compromises, while noticeable, don’t really affect your enjoyment. Also impressive is the way the game retains some of the debris-based effects that make it so satisfying to play on other systems. Crash into a pile of tyres and they’ll fly all over the place in a realistic way, while slamming someone into a fence causes planks of wood to scatter in a believable manner.

Such moments can be surprisingly costly for graphics processing because of the physics calculations involved in throwing around large numbers of objects, but Wreckfest on Switch handles it without batting an eyelid and it’s just as fun to see debris flying around here as it is on other systems. When Wreckfest first released on PC in June of 2018, it was the end of an extensive and turbulent development period. Wreckfest spent four years in early access and arrived to fanfare from wannabe racers around the world. With the PC version sat at a favourable 81 on Metacritic, it’s no wonder it subsequently released on both Xbox and PlayStation. It’s been quite the wait though for Switch fans to get the chance to play the spiritual successor to FlatOut and Destruction Derby, and it was feared that the wait was representative of the difficulties in getting Wreckfest to run on Switch hardware. Fear no more. Wreckfest on the Nintendo Switch is an absolute banger. From its game modes to its handling and its racing mechanics, Wreckfest delivers a racing experience to rival anything on the Switch to date. Where it matters most, Bugbear Entertainment and THQ Nordic have delivered.

The expert delivery begins with the handling. I’m a firm believer that the success of a racing game starts here because all other aspects are inconsequential if the car doesn’t handle as it should. No matter what vehicle you are racing in Wreckfest, be it RWD, FWD, a school bus, or a three-wheeler, the team has successfully captured the feel behind the wheel. Better still, there are a small but impactful selection of settings that can be tweaked to tailor the ride to your liking. Words such as differential, gear ratio, brake balance, and suspension conjure different emotions for different people. Bugbear have made all of these both accessible and understandable, with the four receiving a brief explanation on the tuning screen. You can then use the sliders to determine the result you are looking for, and there is a direct and immediate impact on the racing experience as soon as you hit accept. Second on my list of racing requirements is an eclectic or interesting set of race modes. So when the opening race has you speeding round on a lawnmower smashing other lawnmower racers to the ground, you know you’re in for a treat.
