Find targets, snatch any vehicle, sneak around enemy bases, fight whatever they send at you, factions, etc. I think it was missing some faction stuff that could’ve made it more dynamic. Meanwhile, despite having multiple unique characters, it didn’t matter which one you selected as there were no unique traits. Either way, I agree that the blueprint for Mercenaries is such a unique and interesting one that could make for a dynamic and ‘living’ open world game. It just needs something bigger than shooting people, though. Imagine some Witcher/Mass Effect type game where you have a good narrative and interesting characters but have to make difficult decisions that impact the overall game at various points of the game. Again, one of the things about all these shooter games is that it’s all just mindless violence and killing. I think with an open world shooter where you’re in a hostile country/warzone, you can make it where there are more solutions to certain problems than just fighting alone. Maybe you have certain limited special resources that you can use to get a faction or village on your side and then, you see the effect of it as the game goes on. Suddenly, Small Village A has guards patrolling around (you have to pick good guards or else corruption meter can lead to village becoming hostile). The well you used your special funds for is now up and running (giving you water to use and helping happy populace meter). Certain questlines can impact standing with or comments from certain villages/NPCs. This, in turn, impacts factions.
