This one-two punch of cheeky localization and enthusiastic voice over kept me engaged in Fairy Fencer F long after I stopped caring about the plot. When I wasn’t laughing at silly banter, I was happily shaping what kind of Fencer I wanted each of them to be. Customization in Fairy Fencer F is fun thanks to a flexible system that lets you distribute experience points however you want. I could, for example, increase Fang’s basic sword prowess, or unlock combo attacks that can be chained together to give combat a satisfyingly rhythmic feel. You can also boost a Fencer’s stats by equipping them with fairies found in acquired Furies. It’s best to pair Fencers with a fairy that reflects their strengths (i.e. equipping Fang with a fire-based fairy that will enhance his pyro spells), but I like that I could change out these tiny beings to score all types of different benefits like higher attack percentages in battle or extra experience points. And any fairies not equipped were put to good use with World Shaping, a nifty feature that lets you change the parameters of a dungeon to your advantage. Even a fairy’s World-Shaping powers are customizable thanks to Godly Revival, a mode that lets you remove one of the special Furies used to seal away the gods, then fuse it with a fairy to give that fairy an extra stat boost. I didn’t quite understand why actions in Godly Revival don’t tie into the story more (you don’t actually need to remove all the Furies from a sleeping god to finish the game).

But nevertheless I liked being able to increase a fairy’s effectiveness in battle. Speaking of battle, I really dig Fairy Fencer’s combat, which offers a surprising amount of lateral movement during an enemy encounter. I could move my Fencers around the battlefield, adjust a spell’s AoE using the L1/R1 buttons to target specific enemies, choose from a wide variety of magics and abilities, and even transform into Fury form, a type of overdrive that lets Fencers use a special skillset for a limited time. This broad range of attack options kept the turn-based combat system fresh and interesting, even when the same enemies appeared over and over (and over) again to challenge my Fencers. Difficulty wise, enemies don’t offer much of a challenge, save for the tough-as-nails minibosses. Players are introduced to Fang, a male character who sort of just coasts by life. Although Fang is nothing special, the supporting cast grows rather large and they make the story quite enjoyable. However, it does end up evolving into a fairly complex and unique system thanks to the layers of customization available to the players. Players can also customize their fairy weapons which can get pretty complex depending on how powerful you’re trying to get. This game is no walk in the park and can often test your abilities in battles, so the difficulty options can really help players out if they are having a tough time. Let’s get back to the weapons though, each weapon can attach a Furie card which will add effects and buffs to the character. They will also level up and get more powerful as the player fights. Furies are given a rank that usually addresses their power level, but they are all pretty unique and their designs are reminiscent of cards from Magic the Gathering. Level designs aren’t too complex, but they do vary between themes. Events will require multiple trips to these places so they can get a bit repetitive at times. The same goes for the enemies, but at least the boss designs were all pretty cool. If you’re playing on a tougher difficulty, of course, level grinding will be necessary, but thankfully to speed up this process there are skip action animation that will get you through battles extremely fast. This mechanic helps lessen the fatigue of hanging out in a dungeon because level grinding can be sped up to get you out of that dungeon in record timing.

The Nintendo Switch version does come with a handful of issues. Running on the Switch, some areas of Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force seems to look a little dark to the point where it’s tough to see what’s in front of you in dungeons. At first, I thought it was my television or settings on the Switch, but nope, it’s definitely the game. Also, there are a few times where I experience strange slow down in battles and was surprised to see a lag when I’m removing a sword from the goddess, even in docked mode. However, my biggest gripe with the game is the quality of the town icons on the world map which look like colored smudges. The developers have stated these problems will be fixed, but as of the morning of launch day, there is no patch available. That being said, this is a version of Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force that you can take on the go with you and play through a dungeon or two on your commute or enjoy some of the comical sub-events. The Switch version also has all the DLC available for the game, which sets you up to hit the ground running in dungeons. If you plan on picking up this game, the first thing you must do is adjust the audio settings. As has been my experience with other Compile Heart games, the default settings will cause you to miss out on most of the dialog due it being so low and the repetitive music and sound effects being blazingly loud.

With that out of the way — Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force casts you in the role of Fang, who comes across a sword he believes will grant him a wish. He’s wrong. When Fang pulls the sword out of the ground, he is greeted by Eryn, a fairy, who informs him he is a fencer and pushes him into a grand adventure to collect the furies needed to revive the Goddess and bring peace to the land. Along the way, you meet new party members, fight against impossible odds, yadda-yadda-yadda. It’s a JRPG and it doesn’t really try to reinvent the wheel. In Destructoid’s review of the original game, Ms. Vincent wrote at length about her distaste for Fang and Eryn. Looking over what she said, I agree with her to a certain extent. Fang isn’t the most engaging character, Eryn is a bit of an overbearance, and together they’re like an annoying anime version of Ray and Debra Barone. The rest of the cast fills the standard Compile Heart tropes, from the haughty princess Tiara to the hypersexual Harley. Fans of the developer should already be used to repetition and it’s no different here. Early on, the gameplay gets into a cycle of entering a dungeon, collecting a fury, and releasing a piece of the goddess.
