I have also left a review on The Secret of Monkey Island as I played that first. If you haven’t ever played the first in the series, I would really recommend doing so because this game will flow a lot better and make more sense and, indeed, be a richer experience, if you start with the first in the series. As with The Secret of Monkey Island, this game allows you to seamlessly switch between the old graphics and GUI and the new. These games are fun and light-hearted with many funny jokes and antics. Hopefully without spoiling anything, my advice is twofold:

1) Really use the cursor to examine each screen as this will save you from having to rely on hints; if you don’t thoroughly explore screens with the cursor you can miss some objects that you act upon. In Sierra Online games, you can type look around and (generally speaking) it will give you a summary of each screen and sometimes that summary can reveal things that you have missed. Because this is a point-and-click interface (as opposed to a parsing interface), it is important to really look. This brings me to my next bit of advice:

2) In your inventory, certain objects can interact – sometimes one object will change or alter another and sometimes objects might combine in to turn-into or produce something new. There were times when I was playing the game and I couldn’t resolve a puzzle and I literally just used my entire inventory on a particular item until I realised which one it was – and it was not really logical (but it was very funny). Hopefully I have given some good general advice without ruining anything. As I said in my review of The Secret of Monkey Island, these games are not like Sierra games – you won’t have to worry about missing anything and then restoring waaaaay back and having to re-play a huge chunk of the game because you didn’t pick up a lantern or some artefact or another. This allows for a smoother game play, in my opinion. However, I don’t really compare the two styles of games, because each has their own enjoyment in different ways 🙂
