So before you put those decorations away for another year grab your Santa hat and have a read. It’s Christmas Eve, and the game’s story follows a 12-year-old boy named Cisco who learns that Santa Claus has been kidnapped by the evil baddie Krampus. Cisco embarks on a long journey across six chapters plus a prologue and epilogue to rescue Santa and save Christmas. Cisco must save Christmas with the help of Kosmos, the Christmas spirit, in the shape of Cisco’s old teddy bear and a few other friends. Watch Over Christmas is a full-fledged adventure game clocking in around 12-15 hours for a first playthrough. The game is designed with all the elements of classic point and click adventure games with a modern twist. It is a typical point and click game. You have a bar at the bottom of the screen that is your inventory. Anything you click on and collect goes into your bag/inventory; you click and drag on an item in your inventory to use it. The puzzles, on the whole, are challenging and pretty logical. Clues for most of the puzzles are in the environments of the game. So if you keep your eyes peeled, most are easy enough to spot. However, some of the other puzzles are a little obscure. A section of the play in the game reminded me of the Lost Woods in Zelda; if you go the wrong direction, you end up back at the start. Only in Watch over Christmas, you talk to magic mushrooms, giving you hints on what direction to go. If you don’t follow their hints, you’ll be walking around the forest lost for days. Unfortunately, there isn’t a dedicated standalone hint system in the game, and at times, I did feel that one should be included to help the player a little on their adventure. There are plenty of areas for Cisco and Kosmo to visit on their quest to rescue Santa Claus. I particularly like the Yule forest and the funfair, which you visit early in the game. In addition, there are many quirky characters to interact with and gather clues from on what your next move should be. The story is interesting, and it certainly pushes you on to find out what happens and does Cisco manage to rescue Santa. The game is full of humour, between Cisco talking to the camera in 4th wall mode and corny questions and answers you can choose when interacting with the characters.

Classic 2D point and click style.

Graphically the game is delightful, full of colour and gives off a festive feel. It reminds me of a pop-up book. Music is appropriate and in keeping with the season the game is set in. However, there isnt any voice acting at this stage in the game’s development. I did feel that it needed voice acting to lift the game’s story a little. It’s fine that the voice acting is missing for now, but it would add more to the game if it were there. I have read that the developers are working on the voice acting to add it later. Controls are mainly via the mouse and it all works fine, though be prepared for a lot of clicking. The game menu does say that a controller works with the game but neither of the two controllers I have for my laptop wouldn’t work with the game. There may be just the smallest of windows for Dionous Games’ Watch Over Christmas to make a mark, but after previously releasing on PC and Nintendo Switch, it’s now time for the point-and-click madness to unfold on Xbox. There’s a chance this will be the most Christmassy game you will play this year. More than 60 stunning hand-drawn backgrounds, an original score, and a special companion are just a few features that complement the game’s atmosphere. As an “old school” vintage adventure gamer, I often struggle to take to newer adventure titles that attempt to emulate the classic style; furthermore, I’m generally not much of a fan of anything too Christmassy (yeah, I know!). And when, when I stumbled over the demo for this game I oddly found myself really liking it, and soon enough had purchased the full version. A really nice game, which succeeds mostly by not simply trying to clone the old LucasArts (and similar) formula. You play as young boy Cisco, who must save Christmas after Santa is imprisoned by old enemy Krampmus; Cisco works well as a protagonist as the designers thankfully resisted temptation to make him either a stereotypical nerdy genius, or a young brat with “attitude”. Young Cisco is shown to be quite clever, but not in an exaggerated way; instead he is just a good lad trying to do the right thing, and it is this charming innocence that serves the game so well. Cisco’s teddy bear also becomes inhabited by ‘The Spirit of Christmas’, which is a nice touch; this bear (Kosmos) seems intended to mostly serve to give hints, but in actuality he doesn’t really do too much of that throughout the adventure other than of the basic “try everything” variety. Even so, it’s a nice addition to the overall game.

60+ stunning hand-drawn environments.

This is a really enjoyable adventure game, using the Christmas theme well without being overly saccharine. It is mostly of the typical “collect and use” items formula, and seasoned adventure gamers (of which I consider myself one) should find some enjoyable puzzles to tackle without being over taxed. However there are a few individual puzzles thrown in here-and-there which I did find a bit more tricky and slowed up my progress a bit; Actually they’re probably not all that hard but could have used a bit more of a hint of how to tackle them in the dialogue (and which is surely where Kosmos should have been utilised more). A couple of such puzzles, such as opening a coded safe, and one involving smoke signals (which gave me a real “d’oh!” moment when I realised the solution), I did eventually give in and look for some mild hints online, but the rest of the game I made my own way through without hints. There are six chapters in total, each mostly in a different setting for each one but with a few previous locations occasionally being revisited. I enjoyed all of these, only the second chapter (set at a wizard festival) feeling slightly less Christmassy and mildly more like filler, but I still had fun with it. Beyond the first chapter, set in Cisco’s house on Christmas Eve, I enjoyed the Chapter 3 the most, involving a quaint Christmas town of two halves – Santa’s half cheery.

Krampmus’s half suitably rundown and glum. Some of the chapters are longer than others – the final one being (predictably) short, but the length of this (reasonably long) adventure is easily good value for it’s price. The adventure is of the gentle humour variety, and is a very family friendly play. There were one or two minor inclusions that I did wonder if served as nods towards more mature jokes, but if so they were so very mild that there’s nothing to worry about if playing the game with children. Occasionally I found I encountered pixel-hunting which slowed me down (such as some logs on Chapter 1 which I previosly hadn’t even realised were there), until I realised that pressing space-bar helpfully highlights all available interactive points on-screen. The “traditional 2D graphics” are decent, with changing from room to room bmostly being seamless, and some nice in-game music. Although (I think) every item you will collect has a use, there are many things scattered around the screens of each chapter that feel like either red herrings, or possibly from puzzles that never made it into the final game. Either way I found this fine, as too many modern adventures try to “hold the players hand” of what to do throughout, so having some ultimately ‘useless’ things experiment with adds to the level of deduction needed to proceed through the game.

It’s odd that the game was released just a couple of days before Christmas; if released slightly earlier the challenge to “save Christmas” before 25th December would have had more incentive, but regardless, this overall is an extremely enjoyable tale, which really won me over. In fact, the only particularly weak thing I can think about it, is the title itself, which doesn’t really sell the game that well, but don’t let that put you off – if you enjoy tradtional-style adventure games and fancy something a little Christmassy, give this one a go. I was lucky to Beta Test this lovely gem of a game in October and it certainly got me in the mood for Christmas. It has everything a Christmas Adventure needs: Danger, Excitement, Wonder and a little Magic. The Characters are all great, Music and Writing are spot on and the artwork is so Christmassy it put me in that cuddly snugly kind of mood so often that I drank a lot of Hot Chocolate over the 40 hours or so I tested the game, and now resemble Santa a little more. I originally found one or two puzzles and some dialogue choices a bit odd, but the Developers were eager for feedback and made changes to some designs and translations so that my final full play through (about ten hours when you remember what to do.), was a smooth bug free experience and even had some surprising additions that made me smile.Living with Temptation 1
