Despite what mankind has achieved in terms of science, space still remains the final frontier. We may be still quite a ways from manned deep-space expeditions but we’ll still keep fantasizing about it. Aside from the wonders that come from flying among the stars and looking for new worlds to explore, there’s the ship that needs to make these journeys. As it was when people decided to sail the seas, maintaining a ship requires a whole crew to pull their weight and keep things running smoothly. That’s the core premise of Trigon: Space Story by Sernur.tech and you never know what you’re going to find out in space. Stories in space tend to be some of the most epic and complex. There are entire odysseys dedicated to small crews risking everything to find life on other planets and pursue a future for humanity. In Trigon: Space Story, you’re encouraged to pursue your own future however you see fit. You take control of a small crew aboard a vessel who gets wrapped up in intergalactic politics, while also fending for themselves. You’re a key member of the events that are going to unfold, but you can also make some events happen for yourself while you’re pursuing the main story.

Engage in Epic Space Battles.

When FTL hit the scene, it left quite an impression in terms of space travel and management. Though Trigon: Space Story tries to follow in its footsteps, it may follow too closely. The first is that it doesn’t add enough to feel different. You’re still in a ship separated into rooms with individual crewmembers roaming around. There are energy points and levels to worry about that’ll need fixing whenever they break in battle and events. Though it captures them quite well, it lacks transformation.Oxygen

Here are some features of Trigon:

      1. Explore a Vast and Mysterious Galaxy – Travel to unique and exotic planets, each with their own environments, cultures, and challenges.
      2. Engage in Epic Space Battles – Equip your ship with a variety of weapons and upgrades, recruit a skilled crew, and engage in thrilling space combat.
      3. Unravel the Secrets of the Universe – Discover ancient artifacts and powerful technologies that will aid you in your quest to uncover the mysteries of the galaxy.
      4. Customize Your Playstyle – With a wide variety of ships, weapons, and upgrades to choose from, you can customize your gameplay experience to suit your playstyle.

Then there’s the difficulty level. When it comes to roguelike games, there’s always going to be a degree of luck involved. Sometimes you get bad layouts and other times they’re perfect, but the challenge should always be scaled fairly no matter which layout you get. However, that’s not the case here. Enemy encounters jump between being too easy and overly difficult even when you’re just starting out. There are a surprising number of low-level ships that have a much higher evasion than you so you’ll be struggling just to hit them. Lastly, the value system is imbalanced. If you want to have a fighting chance at making it through to the end of a story, you’ll need to grind and hope that you’ll get lucky with huge bounties. Everything requires either lots of scrap or credits in order to upgrade your ship and buy stronger weapons. Since everything is up to the fates, you’ll more often than not be underpowered when faced with tougher encounters. In the modern language of gamers it has become common to refer to game clones not by the now obsolete X clone (e.g. Doom clone) but as x-likes: roguelike, Soulslike etc. Trigon: Space Story fits the FTL-like description perfectly as it adheres almost completely to the style, interface and basic gameplay loop of Subset Games’ famous game.

Explore a Vast and Mysterious Galaxy.

Adding some new elements but clearly targeting the audience that logged hundreds of hours traversing dangerous sectors and engaging in countless spaceship battles. So the basic question for this review is rather simple: Can Trigon: Space Story also replicate the addictiveness of FTL or will it join the pile of would-be imitators that failed to come close to the original? For those who haven’t had the chance to play the modern classic called FTL, and I urge you to do so immediately because the game is really great, in Trigon: Space Story you take the role of a starship captain who has to cross star systems full of dangers and enemies without ending up as… stardust. In the image above you can see the game map from which you choose your next destination with the ultimate goal of reaching the next objective, if you play in campaign mode, or exploring the Trigon universe in Free Play mode. Each star system you visit can host various random events, from peaceful and profitable to hostile and destructive! Text-based events are relatively simple: you will be presented with a situation and asked to make a choice on how to resolve it, with the results varying. Warhammer Chaosbane

If you have improved your ship’s equipment or manned your crew with competent cosmonauts, additional options may present themselves (colored in orange) which generally lead to a favourable outcome of the event. The battles are even simpler: Either you win or you are destroyed and your run ends! Here we should point out that during the battle you do not directly control the ship but you choose which subsystems of the opponent will target your weapons and which tasks your crew will perform. For example, you may want your shield operator at his post to quickly raise the shields if they fall, but someone has to close the hole opened in the hull by the enemy’s missile before we all suffocate to death! Fortunately there is a pause option at any time so you can assess the situation and issue orders at your leisure. As already mentioned, Trigon offers both campaign and Free Play but the roguelite element is very strong in both modes. Even in the campaigns where each race’s objectives are specific, the events you encounter and the location of the objectives are random, resulting in each run being completely unique. Of course the permadeath element for a roguelite goes without saying: if your ship is destroyed you’ll see the game over screen and have to start over.

Encounter Unique Alien Races.

However, a failed run is not a waste of time because, in addition to the experience gained, most of your actions result in unlocking better equipment that will be available for purchase in subsequent runs. If you’re going to take out for the stars, you’d better make sure you have a good ship and crew with you. In Trigon: Space Story, you can get those and then some. The first is the overall presentation. This is an isometric 3D game that incorporates some split-screen effects for encounters. It’s got a nice smooth sheen to aspects like the ships, stations, and space phenomena that give it a streamlined look. When it comes to the internal rooms of the ship, things still feel linked to the exterior, and all the crewmembers feel present. Speaking of the crew, there’s a lot more emphasis placed on their importance. Unlike FTL, the beings you recruit for your ship are given more influence on how things go. In addition to keeping your ship in one piece, there’s the challenge that comes with keeping your designated captain alive. On top of that, there are four species you can have aboard your ship all with their strengths and weaknesses. However, each crewmember also has individual stats and professions to expand the element of strategy. Lastly, this is a true thorough rogue-like experience.

You only get to choose which species storyline you play and your starting ship, but everything else is up to the fates. Each run, save for the story missions, will shuffle the encounters while presenting detailed text. Trigon: Space Story is a roguelike single-player game that focuses heavily on strategy. Dive into a gripping story campaign that sees you commanding your own spaceship and deciding what sort of captain you want to be: a ruthless barbarian, an adventurous fortune hunter, or the hero the galaxy so desperately needs. In Trigon: Space Story, you’ll have a devastating arsenal of up to 100 different weapons at your disposal—including lasers, turrets, plasma cannons, space bombs and combat drones. You can pause the game at any time so you don’t lose sight of things in the heat of battle. But it’s on you to make the right tactical decisions and capitalize on your crew’s skills—because death is permanent! Only by experimenting with various strategies will you be able to master the challenging combat situations you must face as captain. Choose from a large selection of spaceships: Will you start your journey in a classic human spaceship, an energy-efficient Etari model, a bio-mechanical Rakkhi vessel or a high-tech Taertikon craft?

Explore a Vast and Mysterious Galaxy – Travel to unique and exotic planets, each with their own environments, cultures, and challenges.

Don’t hesitate over moral decisions—space doesn’t forgive mistakes! You’ll have the freedom to roam the galaxy on your conquest campaign: visit space stations, explore abandoned colonies and capture resources. Along the way, you’ll encounter four different races, each with their own characteristics, technologies and philosophies. Gain experience through quests, sudden events and tactical space battles and bring your newly acquired skills to bear against your enemies. The procedurally generated universe and dynamic events guarantee you a refreshingly different adventure every time. This, along with a sophisticated endless game mode, makes Trigon: Space Story highly replayable. You can also run from most fights as well but you cant win without fighting so trying to figure out what will be your downfall and what’s a winnable battle is very hard. The bounty system is also not very clear. I had no idea whether a 2.4 bounty was high in the second system or not. I don’t often like comparing one game to another but the fact that this is a direct copy of FTL I kinda have to: it was pretty clear in FTL when things were going to ramp up. Raft
