Simplicty with Depth

The game has two different game modes: endless and story. The story revolves around Andy and Heather who had followed a strange signal through space. Upon their arrival, they are greeted by a hive mind species that are unexpectedly friendly. Seven years go by in peace and harmony until one day (as you might expect from a wave shooter with aliens) they attack our two protagonists. They flee with their non-hive mind pet murphy to return to civilization, only to see that the hive is on the move as well. Uncover the truth of the betrayal that has occurred. Space Raiders in Space is a unique one in my book and that may have something to do with the comedy that’s in this game which is brash, dirty, and a little dry. The way the group communicates with each other, the condescending descriptions which is something that I have always enjoyed, that started with a small game called Conkers Bad Fur Day. DEADLY NIGHT

The objective is simply to survive by building up your defenses and looting your surroundings. Your crew revolves around 5 basic orders: attack, defend, cower, search, and build. All self-explanatory but “search” is an important one. Searching uncovers the necessary items you need to construct your defenses but you will also find weapons. This is important because weapons have degradation in this game and you’ll need to keep a steady supply of guns to keep you alive. There’s a nice selection you can choose from. From SMG, assault rifles, snipers, crossbows, Tesla guns, and RPGs, all with varying tiers. You also have a wide variety of defenses such as barricades, turrets, and mines, with over a dozen options to set it up the way you want and keep the bugs from picking at your soft jiggly bits. I love to make a perimeter with the defense points and surrounding them with the rifle turrets, proven to keep anything and everything at bay.

Challenging Maps

It changes the levels up by expanding out the search perimeter after each wave, giving you more room and possible defense points, if you choose. I never did as it seemed better to stay at the center point of attack. After a few rounds of killing the younglings, you will move to the big leagues with the bosses. As far as I know, there are three different bosses, each with their own strengths and weakness, but one thing is for sure, they all have a massive health pool so get ready with some heavy-hitting weapons. In the endless mode, you have a chance to leave after each wave if you choose but at the cost of food. Between the levels, you’ll have an interaction or event that will occur that you must make a decision on, which can help or hinder you in the next level. As expected, they are weird, awkward, and sometimes don’t make sense, kind of like my body proportions. Dead By Daylight

Graphically, it has a well-illustrated comic book style, which seems to be a new trend because I have reviewed quite a few games with this art style. Level design is great with wonderful sets and changing spawn points for the aliens to keep you on your toes on some levels. Sound design is slightly repetitive but in all honesty, it’s a wave shooter so it’s to be expected and like I said before, the conversations that the characters have are just icing on the cake for me. Music is not bad, it sounds more like background tension music and honestly gets drowned out by all other sound effects, at least for me it was not truly memorable. All in all, its an enjoyable romp, limitations and all, and one you should check out if you’re a tower defense/wave shooter fan. There are 3 game modes in SR: Story, Endless, and Survival. Story has you follow the main plot line for what’s taking place, unlocking new equipment after each chapter.

Unique weapons

Your crew handles matters by exploring their environment for important resources, which you turn into defensive barriers. Thankfully there’s a few weapons left behind as well, since weapons degrade with use. Of note, the materials you have as you finish a chapter carries over to the next one, so even if you do manage to narrowly scrape by and survive, you might screw yourself for the next round. This principle also applies in Endless and Survival Mode. Endless Mode emphasizes getting a high score, as you travel from one location to the next. The objective is to balance gathering enough resources, particularly food, to survive the trip to the next location. However, staying in one place leads to the waves of insects to become stronger. Survival removes any idea of moving somewhere else, as you stay in place and see how long you’re able to last. With enemy forces gaining strength every wave, and nowhere else to go

it’s only a matter of time until you meet a grisly fate.The game can be played with a controller, but with how it functions as a strategy game, I found it easier just to follow the tutorial and use the mouse and keyboard. Moving the camera around is done with either the ‘WASD’ or ‘arrow’ keys, and the perspective can be rotated with ‘Q’ and ‘E.’ There are shortcut keys available to bring up some of the menus, but I relied on the mouse to bring them up myself. Otherwise, the mouse is used for interacting with all of the items in the game. The scroll wheel of the mouse zooms the perspective in and out, as well as rotates objects before placing them. It functions well enough, though the UI feels a bit cluttered or clumsy at times.Human beings are exploring the cosmos, and a few astronauts make contact with a hive mind alien race, and it actually leads to peaceful coexistence. However, they suddenly turn hostile, and the astronauts desperately try to reconnect with humanity.

Story elements unfold both in the gameplay and in-between chapters. The tone of the story is largely serious as far as the events taking place, but the tone of the writing, character interactions, and the voiceovers don’t take it very seriously. It’s a bit of an odd blend, but it kind of works.Not only does SR make use of a comic book style in its visuals, it’s also heavy-handed with darkness. This is typically done to reinforce a moody or serious tone, making everything seem gritty, but the visual effect here is that the colors contrast strongly against so much black background. SR somewhat lampoons the potentially dour tone by interspersing goofy dialogue and commentary from the narrator. Either way, I like this approach to the graphics, as this coloring and style aren’t something I see in games often, and I’m a sucker for blue and purple.With a soundtrack not nearly as striking as the graphics, the music in SR sounds like eerie ambient noise DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme Venus Vacation
