Exploring the Da’at zones feels better than ever thanks to the introduction of Magatsu Rails, which allow you to quickly navigate across large distances and between elevations. As a Sonic fan, I’ll take any amount of rail grinding I can get in games. This was a delight, allowing you access to entirely new parts of the map or just creating shortcuts to make platforming easier. Some are obvious to find, but others require you to use demon partners on the field to snuff them out (and yes, Nahobeeho is as amazing to have at your side as you’d expect). Hunting them down kept exploring these familiar maps fresh to me. Oirbo

Replacing the Chiyoda region’s role in the Canon of Vengeance is Shinjuku, a whole new Da’at zone. It feels at home in the lineage of Shin Megami Tensei V map design, and it was just as engaging to explore and uncover every inch of its map. There’s some good visual variety here between its major areas too, and I’d say it probably ended up being my new favorite one in the game. This is also where I feel like they really leaned into the design changes possible with the new Save anywhere function (previously being a function locked to Leylines), with more large demons positioned to possibly ruin your day if you aren’t careful. Shin Megami Tensei IV was always my favorite mainline Shin Megami Tensei for the years building up to its fifth mainline entry, and it seems like so many of these new changes build off of that one instead of Nocturne, which I appreciate a lot.
