Mortal Shell is very much so a ‘souls like’ game (as cliché as that sounds..); dark atmosphere; detailed, epic or claustrophobic environments; unforgiving combat; grotesque and/or great foes, and all brought together under the unique gameplay element that is discovering and harnessing the remains of fallen warriors – the Mortal Shells. Although I find it a disservice to call games ‘a souls-like game’ as I feel it detracts from the originality, creativity and hard work of the developers, it is just such an efficient and understandable way of explaining the ‘feel’ and/or ‘tone’ of a game in a few words.

Gameplay can be somewhat tailored around your playstyle, but is primarily fast-paced combat, with moments of respite for exploration and RPG elements. There is a good range of customisation and gameplay features to keep you on your toes with new ways to approach things, but your reaction time, patience and skill – or lack thereof – will dramatically impact your experience. As for the ‘enhanced edition’ on PS5, if you wanted to play but you were waiting for a smoother, more visually impressive version of the game, then now is your time to get stuck in! The ‘enhanced edition’ for next-gen (really should be referred to as current gen by this point..) boasts improved textures, faster loading times, higher framerates, higher resolution, improving texture streaming (reduced pop-in, but still isn’t perfect), and for PS5 exclusively, DualSense haptic and trigger support. The game targets 4K (/60fps, but realistically runs at 60fps 95% of the time, and with dynamic resolution scaling, the resolution is around 1800p the majority of the time (check out Digital Foundry for a deep dive on permanent metrics!), but is overall relatively sharp and smooth throughout.
