Fighting as a Jedi or Sith might not have the depth of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but it’s nonetheless fast, fluid, and it feels fantastic. If you’re controlling a character equipped with a blaster, you now have the option of taking cover behind walls and other objects to pick your foes off from afar, and can switch between cover positions with the tap of the button. (A similar cover-based mechanic was featured in 2016’s LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but only in specific sections of a level). I love the neat touch atop this system that you’re able to quickly rebuild destroyed cover (as can enemies), but outside of a couple of specific boss fights I hardly ever felt the need to actually shelter behind anything. In The Skywalker Saga, the combination of a constantly recharging health bar and the authentic inaccuracy of each Stormtrooper’s shots meant there was rarely any risk in taking a run and gun approach. I certainly still enjoyed the gunplay in The Skywalker Saga, but more for its flashy spectacle than its shallow attempts at strategy. it also leads to a greater appreciation of how realistically rendered each individual LEGO brick is. 2021’s Hot Wheels Unleashed set a new standard for high fidelity virtual plastic, and The Skywalker Saga certainly matches it down to every last plastic seam and textured hair piece, with the paint on minifigs chipping away convincingly after extended use as though they’re a much-loved toy. Absolutely every LEGO creation looks so uncannily true to life, that when you blast an immaculately assembled 1000-piece Tie Fighter out of the sky, you can almost hear the cries of anguish from the parent who spent their whole Sunday afternoon helping their kid build it. The Skywalker Saga consistently finds a way to gently mock its source material with wonderfully absurd and hilarious results. Amazingly, even the events of The Rise of Skywalker are substantially more enjoyable when they’re deliberately ridiculous, as opposed to accidentally so. I knew I was in for a good time with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga when I began the Prequel Trilogy portion and saw Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan’s ship get stopped at a traffic gate floating in space. After a quick video conference with the Trade Federation—who hastily tried to hide their evil plans, labeled “evil plans”—Qui Gon and Obi Wan breeze through the gate, accidentally knocking a hapless battle droid, sending it floating off into space. The Skywalker Saga pushes its charm, with practically every cutscene featuring some visual gag or punchline at the film series’ expense. Kylo Ren is pumping iron and flexing as Rey contacts him in that infamous scene from The Last Jedi. Ben Kenobi pops some popcorn before watching Leia’s message to him in A New Hope. At the beginning of Revenge of the Sith, Lego Count Dooku makes a cheeky plastic pop noise as Anakin scissors his head off.

This ribald sense of humor reminds me of the classic Star Wars parody Spaceballs in the best way, and it really centers the experience. You’re often required to break down detritus and environment objects to produce the raw materials for puzzle solutions, and some playable droids can split in half to squeeze through tight spaces. The currency of the game is, as ever, ‘studs’, those tiny, one-peg pieces that always seem to find their way into couch cushions. The actual terrain of the world and most buildings have always been realistic rather than made out of Lego in the series, and here in The Skywalker Saga the ludicrously detailed environments add another layer to the presentation. The underwater city of the Gungans on Naboo or Star Destroyer graveyard on Jakku look like they could be maps from a lost Battlefront game. Instead they’re inhabited by cute little Lego versions of iconic Star Wars characters. It has a similar effect to Mario exploring New Donk City in Nintendo’s Mario Odyssey, a wonderfully absurd combination of cartoonish characters with an authentic world. The charm of the setting also extends to the voice acting, a feature I wasn’t sold on before starting The Skywalker Saga. Back in the hazy prehistoric mists of the mid 2000s.

What really marked the titles out, though, was their multiplayer, which provided a safe space for children to learn the fundaments of the action adventure genre in the company of their parents and siblings – from accurate jumping to puzzle solving to melee combat.

Now a whole new generation will have that pleasure. Taking players on a mammoth journey through all nine of the movies, The Skywalker Saga treats each episode as a mini-adventure that closely follows the narrative of the film, adding extra sequences to enhance the playability and puzzle-solving fun. You can take on the trilogies in any order, though you always have to start with the opening chapter, so you can’t just skip to The Empire Strikes Back without completing A New Hope. Wherever you choose to begin, you get a breathless, often laugh-out-loud thrill ride, filled with the sorts of visual gags and slapstick asides that have made the series so hugely successful. Take a wrong turn in the Death Star and you’ll discover Stormtroopers doing a tai chi class; explore Cloud City and you’ll find where Lando Calrissian keeps his vast collection of fancy cloaks. It’s worth playing just for the excellent cinematics, which often nod slyly toward longstanding fan debates and talking points. The finale of The Force Awakens, for example, has a grief-stricken Chewbacca running to embrace Leia, who appears set to return his affection, only to leg it right past him and hug Rey.

The battle at Maz Kanata’s castle takes place in the bright evening sun, with lens flare glinting off incoming fighter craft, while Coruscant provides a vast, vertigo-inducing metropolis of bustling streets and looming skyscrapers. The spaceships are designed to resemble real-life Lego models and they’re so intricately built, it’s a pleasure just watching them swoop overhead. The episodes are light on puzzles, and you’re never going to be stuck for longer than a few minutes. It’s often about working out how to use the special skills of each member of your party; Rey can build gadgets such as gliders and net throwers, while Han Solo can analyse mechanical systems to trigger traps and explosions.Combat is soft too. Your characters have generous health reserves and a mix of blasters, lightsabers and melee moves that crush most enemies with ease. There are slightly more demanding boss battles, including a long tussle with the trash compactor monster and a multi-stage showdown against Kylo Ren, but we’re not talking Elden Ring here.
