That was when I got my first and only framerate drop, like the game was taken by surprise at how much oomph its ghostbusting gun had. It felt good. Ghostbusters ’84 has a sharp wit: it’s still a hilarious satire of money-grubbing small business psychos and the gnarled bundle of red tape they run up against. Nothing about the “close three portals while getting harassed” asymmetrical multiplayer of Spirits Unleashed feels like it’s in keeping with the cynical energy of the source material. Sure, my motley crew of gig workers and I have to coordinate and focus fire on a ghost to pull them into a placeable trap, balancing our respective proton heat levels and working the best angles, but none of us ever felt like Spengler or Ray. Spirits Unleashed just doesn’t have a ton of personality, something that can’t be said for the film it’s based on. The custom characters are real voids: the only things they have to say are affirmative barks in the tutorials. I’d have loved to hear some Akroyd/Ramis-style riffing among the squad mid-mission in the vein of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, but there’s none of that here. Visually, too, Spirits Unleashed is uninspired, resembling the rounded-edge Fortnite style.

We Have The Tools, We Have The Talent

It doesn’t look bad per se—there’s some impressive lighting from the Proton Pack as lightning bolts skitter up and down adjacent walls like a nuclear kaleidoscope—but little else. Barring the licensed theme, the music is unremarkable and bizarrely adjacent to the Harry Potter film scores, a banal 4/4 arrangement of womp-womp horns and royalty-free strings. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed peddles the fantasy of being a Ghostbuster but without any of the style or humor required to really make it feel like you’re in that ugly gray jumpsuit. Moment-to-moment Spirits Unleashed is a bit of a bore. Blasting a ghost fills up a meter. When that meter is full, the ghost can be pulled into the trap, as long as the trap has a charge (another meter). The Proton Pack will overheat if fired too long. That’s three meters on the screen now. When the tutorial is done, there are three more, and none of them fill up or empty out particularly fast. It’s all a bit drab, the meters ticking up and down never requiring more than passive management. The only non-meter-based interaction occurs when a ghost gets near a civilian. You have to do a Gears of War active reload on them to calm them down. (Hey, we’re Ghostbusters, not social workers.) As mentioned in our Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed preview, the setup of the game pits four Ghostbuster recruits against a solo, player-controlled ghost. The Ghostbusters’ goal is to capture the ghost a total of four times, or to destroy the rifts that it uses to respawn, while the ghost must completely haunt the map by horrifying its citizens and then survive a brief concluding timer. From the moment the Ghostbusters enter the map to the moment the match ends, there is a lot more going on, but the concept should be familiar to fans of Illfonic’s games. We Came, We Saw, We Kicked Its Ass

Each Ghostbuster has a PKE Meter for tracking ghosts and rift artifacts; a Particle Thrower for tethering ghosts or damaging rifts; a Proton Pack that regulates the intensity of the Particle Thrower and its cooling; and a Ghost Trap that does exactly as its name implies.As the Ghostbusters team is on the hunt, the ghost is simultaneously doing its requisite haunting or hiding as inanimate objects a la Prop Hunt. With a basic attack and two abilities at its disposal (each with a cooldown after use), the ghost can damage the citizens to build up their terror meter or scare them by possessing objects. As the citizens become more afraid – and eventually leave the map – individual rooms become haunted, adding to the overall haunting meter of the map. Of course, the more terror that the ghost inflicts also increases the odds that the Ghostbusters will find it, which creates a very exciting cat-and-mouse game. Ideally, they want to stun the ghost using the PKE Meter’s charge, tether the ghost, and then pull it toward an open trap. However, completing all those actions requires a lot of coordination and understanding on the part of each player. If everyone is trying to tether the ghost, for example, no one will be able to get a trap out before the ghost breaks free (by mashing a button as part of a simple mini-game). Like Egon, Venkman, Spangler, and Winston, the Ghostbusters must work as a united front to capture the ghost, taking on individual roles and coordinating attacks. For the Ghostbusters team, Spirits Unleashed is at its best with a group of friends or when using in-game voice chat. Being able to call out ghost locations, coordinate plans, and even cut off an escaping ghost is essential to victory. Although the ghost’s sprint is limited by its energy meter, they are still very quick and can move vertically. The Ghostbusters can only use a grappling hook to ascend railings, and that’s assuming they have the grappling hook gadget equipped instead of a different item.

Depending on the skill level of the ghost it can be a challenge to capture it, but the Ghostbusters can even their odds by finding rift artifacts and eliminating the ghost’s respawn chances. Rather than having to catch the ghost 4 times, the team can simplify things down to one capture, using the PKE Meter to find the artifacts that protect the rift and destroying it. Starting with Illfonic’s love letter to Ghostbusters fans: Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed not only sticks to all of the fun quirks of the franchise and drops Easter eggs everywhere, but it succeeds at providing fun story beats throughout that any Ghostbusters fan will gobble up like Slimer. Ernie Hudson and Dan Akroyd return as Winston Zeddmore and Raymond Stantz, respectively; both providing some fantastic voice work for their characters that build out the story following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. There’s enough there to make leveling up your Ghostbuster and an assortment of ghosts a bit less of a chore. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed knows exactly how to deliver a Ghostbusters game: let the players play as themselves, not preestablished characters! From the jump, being able to fully customize your Ghostbuster feels like a dream come true. While the entire game does fall into the more cartoony art style, the character customization options are more robust than I was expecting. Don’t go in expecting RPG levels of detail, but I was able to sit down and create my character that looks close enough to what I look like in real life. On top of all that, being able to see my PSN gamer tag printed right there on the classic Ghostbusters jumpsuit was just icing on the cake. Unlike previous asymmetric multiplayer games, I had a weird connection to my character; unlike previous games where I either played as a “generic horror movie teenager” or a “generic soldier”.

Illfonic has put a lot of thought into their customization options for their Ghostbusters, but any Ghostbusters game is made or broken by its gameplay. Illfonic completely nails the feeling of firing off a proton pack and capturing ghosts, and I’m not entirely sure it could be done any better. From the chaotic particle beam jumping all over the place destroying anything physical in its path, to fighting the resistance of a tethered ghost, Illfonic has been able to dial in what it feels like to be a Ghostbuster. That’s not to say some things could use a bit of tweaking. Throwing down traps feels a bit clunky, as it’s difficult to determine where the actual trap will land. Some of the additional tools and equipment available to the Ghostbusters do feel a bit out of place. Every game needs a grappling hook nowadays…but Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed offers one that is a bit clunky to use. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed offers both complete offline play and standard 4v1 multiplayer.
