You will probably solve this charming adventure in under a few hours. on Switch the action only takes place on the left side of the screen with the other half is used for the map and item selection. There was probably no way around this issue, but when playing on a big screen TV, it feels a waste to use such a small portion of the screen for the actual playfield. Fairune 2 is the second entry in the series, and it’s the biggest offering yet. The core concepts of combat and puzzle solving make a welcome return, but this time you have a vastly expanded overworld (and underworld) to explore. This one hits the spot on pretty much everything you could hope for a sequel and it will the one you will spend most of your time on. Unlike the first game, here you get nearly all the screen real estate you could need to enjoy the pixelated land of Fairune, and it certainly is a very welcomed visual upgrade for those playing in docked mode. However, we do find ourselves frequently roaming the land in hope of finding that elusive ‘Eureka!’ moment that enables us to progress further. Thankfully, this is the only real minus point we find in this expanded sequel. Fairune Origin is the third layer of this multi-tiered cake, but it’s also the smallest. So small, in fact, that the overworld is made of just 12 interconnected single screen areas.

Size is, however, unimportant because you will truly learn to appreciate the ‘less is more’ game design philosophy, with some truly neat and rewarding puzzle solving emerging from such a small playground. It’s true that once you know exactly what to do, you can complete this one in around six minutes, but your first playthrough is a very rewarding experience. Finally, we come to the cherry on top of the proverbial cake: Fairune Blast! This is unavailable when you first start your adventures, with three locks shut tight above the game icon. As you might have already figured out, you’ll be able to remove each lock by successfully completing each aforementioned Fairune adventure. Up to this point you have been flexing your brain to solve puzzles, but this one is a rather radical departure because it’s time to test your hand-eye coordination. Simply pick one of three different coloured fairies and blast your way to the top on what could easily pass as a game of the TwinBee franchise. The game’s aesthetics deliver charming 8-bit style sprites and tiles that successfully manage to be distinct enough to be both pleasing and functional. The music is lovely, pure chiptune that could be playing straight out of a proper NES. Veteran 3DS players will notice a few enhancements on a few choice melodies here and there that, thankfully, do not break the faux nostalgic illusion this whole package blissfully delivers. Speed-runners rejoice: worldwide leader-boards will keep track of your best times playing through the adventure games and your Fairune Blast high-scores.  Fairune’s gameplay is pretty straightforward. On the screen, you have your character as well as your item box and the map. The map is revealed as you enter each new area. Still, it’s easy to get turned around and lost. There are many hidden pathways through trees and unseen caves you can enter. All of this is necessary in order to progress through the game as these areas usually have a certain item you’ll need. You need to be pretty observant or else you’re going to get frustrated. Despite the map and hidden areas, the gameplay is pretty linear. By the time you get to the next puzzle you usually already have the items you need in order to get through.

As far as controls go, there’s not much to it. You walk around using the analog stick and when you encounter an enemy, you just step over them. They get squished into the ground like a pancake. Depending on your level, they’ll give you the same amount of experience points as they take away your hit points. The higher the level you are, soon earlier enemies won’t hurt you at all, but you won’t gain any experience. It’s an interesting concept, but it doesn’t contain the battle mechanics a typical RPG would have. However, there is a final boss battle. Your sword upgrades and you have wings being able to move freely about the screen and mash the A button to shoot lasers out of your sword. It’s cool and fun but seems out of character with the rest of the game. Fairune 2 is similar to the first game. The plot is slightly different, but still sealing away the darkness all the same. The controls are the same as well. The only difference is the size of the game. There are more areas to explore as well as more items and collectibles and slightly different kinds of puzzles – along with the same kinds of puzzles. There’s a lot of backtracking in this game. You need to revisit those places when you have the items needed, but sometimes you don’t know what items you need. Sometimes you’ll forget that puzzle existed at all. There are three major areas, each with caves and underground parts. The map is huge and backtracking is more a pain than fun to explore further. Fairune Origin is almost like a prequel. It’s a much simpler form of the previous two games and shows the original idea the developers had for the game before Fairune and Fairune 2 were born. The controls are the same and the puzzles and items are similar. It’s quick and easy, especially after playing the first two games, you know all the games’ tricks and are able to breeze right through it. For these three games, the music is calming and the sound effects are satisfying – from putting the orbs into their rightful spots on a statue to stomping the enemies into the ground. It is well done. The graphics are slightly different from game to game. They’re pixelated and it looks nice. Knowing two of the games were previously released on the Nintendo 3DS, the graphics suit this collection and carry over well to the latest Nintendo console. Fairune Blast is a completely different game from the other three. It’s a spin-off based on the boss battles in Fairune and Fairune 2.

As the heroine, you fly through the air shooting lasers out of your sword at incoming enemies from the other three games. Once you get to a certain point, a boss will appear and you’ll have to blast him away as well. Destroying enemies will allow them to drop bonus points and fairies will appear once in a while with a power-up for your sword allowing your lasers to be over-powered. Then again, one hit from an enemy and you lose every single power-up. It’s fast-paced and something different to play after all that puzzle solving from the previous games. Fairune Collection is certainly a different kind of RPG. They’re quick and fairly easy games, Fairune 2 being the longest and most in-depth. Fairune is a nice introduction to the games and Fairune Origin is a breeze. Fairune Blast is fun as well, though there’s not much else to it. For a puzzle RPG series, Fairune Collection is pretty casual. You’re able to save at any time and pick up where you left off so you can take your time with it. If you’re a fan of puzzle-solving and some interesting RPG mechanics, give Fairune Collection a try.

Fairuine Collection includes three retro-style adventure RPG, two of were released on the Nintendo 3DS. The games will probably remind you of the old-school The Legend of Zelda games with their exploration and light puzzles to solve, as well as the feel of its colorful overworld. The collection contains Fairune, Fairune 2, Fairune Origin and Fairune Blast – this last one is locked until you complete the other games, which would be my only complaint about the collection since I would have liked it to be unlocked right from the start. Let’s start back at the beginning with Fairune Origin. This game is the first one in the series, and it’s definitely smaller and a bit different from the two other action RPG that would follow it. The overall map is certainly smaller, but the basic gameplay mechanics that would later be refined in Fairune and Fairune 2 are present, making this a short but fun burst of gaming and a short history lesson on the side as you search for the fairies in this bite-sized land. You can finish Fairune Origin in an hour at most. Then there is Fairune Blast, which feels more like a mini-game of sorts since it takes the series into shoot ’em up territory!

It feels a bit weird at first, but as a bonus to the collection, one can’t really complain about the team experimenting with what they can do with the Fairune series, right? Fairune Collection includes four games in one package – Fairune, Fairune 2, Fairune Origin and Fairune Blast! Fairune is a retro-styled adventure RPG. Our heroine embarks upon a journey to unlock three mysterious statues and seal away a great evil. Throughout the journey she will need to solve puzzles, fight monsters, discover new weapons and improve her abilities. Fairune 2 brings our heroine back for another perilous quest, this time to find a lost fairy. This sequel delivers a bigger world for those that are ready for the challenge. Fairune Origin offers an intriguing look at the beginnings of the IP. It provides a short but fun adventure and illustrates how SKIPMORE conceptualised the gameplay of the two games that followed.
