full transparency: i haven’t played much, I’ve gotten through the first floor. this review is based on my CURRENT experience with the game, and will be updated as i play more. this game has the bones of a good roguelite and the art is genuinely great! however, in it’s current state — it feels… okay. the character movement feels a little slow for the speed of the enemies, especially when you don’t have a dedicated dash or dodge ability. you have a parry, but it’s hard to understand the timing. mob enemies are a little samey for the most part and same goes for room layouts. the first boss had one attack but was a damage sponge which felt like an artificial increase in difficulty. it is still easy to beat, but took several minutes. I especially felt the pain of not having a dedicated dodge button here. almost every mob enemy up to this point fired projectiles — and while I didn’t (and still don’t) have a good feel for parry timing, it’s still much easier to understand parrying a projectile than trying to use it on a giant beyblade.

You thought you were good at these games until now. Lots of fun ways to mix and stack stats to keep the play style fresh. So far I’ve gotten barely to the second area, and already i feels like a new game getting there. Excited to see the other bosses. There’s surprising depth to combat, like knowing when to tank a hit vs when to attack to time enemy animations right. Been waiting for this since the Dev advertised it on the Gen Z reddit page. This game kinda reminds me of Hades, and both of games run flawlessly at max resolution on my Lenovo Legion Go. Honestly, its a great game for handheld PC consoles like the Legion Go, Steam Deck, Asus Rog Ally, etc. Poppy Playtime – Chapter 4
